Audrey was behind the counter at Baxter Bakery. After the wedding cake she made for the Tesla wedding on Saturday, after the move, she was finding that getting back into her old routine was comforting. Even though she was surrounded by boxes, she was happy to be moved, happy to be back to work after a two day hiatus. It was her shop, and she worked nearly seven days a week.
She’d just finished cleaning the espresso machine when someone came into the shop. The chime on the door rang out, and she looked up. The redhead smiled brightly. “Hi, there!”
Troy made his way through the door, doing a quick 360 as he looked around, when the woman announced her own presence and he quickly spun to face her. His brow shooting up and a smile spreading open wide as he held his hands ahead of him, making those somewhat signature gestures as he stared back at her, “Hello! Right, uh... coffee shop, thought I’d stop by looking for some coffee. Sounds good, also I heard you --well this is a bakery correct? Yes, of course, coffee and cake and baked goods, people like baked goods.”
He seemed to tick off things in his head, raising a brow a moment, then turned to face her once more, after another quick spin, “Right, so brilliant. Do you do orders? Big orders, like for a gala of some sort?”
“I’ve got a catering menu right here.” Audrey said, watching the man while she pulled a binder out from under the counter. She got the feeling that if she took her eyes off of him for a second she would miss something amazing. Strange to get that feeling after only having heard someone speak for thirty seconds. She didn’t even know his name yet.
“And that’s right. Baxter Bakery. I’m Audrey Baxter.” She gave him a grin.
“Pleasure to meet you Audrey! Brilliant name, Audrey Baxter, love it. Right, catering yes. Uh turns out, I’m setting up a gala at the museum, can’t remember the date now, it might be the 5th of May, that’s it! Yes, Cinco de Mayo, and apparently for Galas you need food and drinks. At least that’s what it’s seeming like, so that’s why I’m here. Need muffins and cupcakes and whatever it is you do for those sorts of things.”
He then patted his pockets, “Don’t exactly have any money on me at the moment, but if you need a down payment I do have this.”
He handed her a small gold coin, “That right there was used in the first ever vending machine, invented in Ancient Rome by the Hero of Alexandria. That’s where I found it of course, inside of the vending machine; well, not just ‘the’ vending machine, but ‘a’ vending machine. Used to dispense holy water, brilliant machine, a bit more morally based than those that distribute candy and condoms now.”
Audrey was about to say something as to how cupcakes might not fit in a Cinco de Mayo Gala, but he just kept talking. And the more he talked, the more she liked him. Something about him was friendly and felt safe. The grin on her face simply spread as she stared at him, then held out her hand to accept whatever it was he was giving her...
...a gold coin. She felt like she was in some strange video game. “...you... wow, okay, so this is from an ancient vending machine, to pay for cupcakes for your Cinco de Mayo Gala?” Trying to get all of this straight. “...you’re a very peculiar man, you know that?”
“Peculiar only because you haven’t experienced me before, otherwise I’m actually particularly normal for myself. Still, uh , no... the cupcakes would be paid for by the money that I might receive at the gala in a donation, though I’m not asking for donations so that might be... difficult, still someone might! If not, I’ll have the money after the gala and you will be paid!”
He then pointed to the gold coin, “But that’s like a .. a pawn. Yes, a pawn, hold it for the loan of cupcakes until I give you money to replace it.”
Audrey was so amused by all of this, she was thinking about asking more questions just to keep him talking. Though, he didn’t seem to need much prompting to keep going. Unable to wipe the smile from her face, she nodded. “All right. I’ll pawn your gold coin. But you’ll have to tell me how many cupcakes you want, what kind and how you want them decorated.”
“Hmm, well right... uh, how long would it take to make cupcakes for May 5th? I mean, well how many cupcakes could you make by then? Enough? I’m thinking, maybe one thousand? That’s a bit much isn’t, it seems high, is it high?” He calculated it in his head, “Right, well I have no idea how many are actually coming so yes, one thousand. And uh, it’s historical this gala, so maybe a history theme.”
Audrey’s eyes bugged out a little before she could stop them. “A thousand? Well... I could probably handle that size of an order in... a matter of days.” She had enough ovens. Already the logistics of something that size were running through her mind. If she was to simply focus on the order and not the rest of the shop, she’d have to bring in all of her girls to help take up the slack. But it would be worth it, she thought. Not only because of the pay for the cakes, but also getting the name of the bakery out to everyone at the Gala.
“What part of History?” She added. “That’s a lot of time to cover.”
“Oh, well, you know history. I suppose there are eras aren’t there, we’re obsessed with that, eras, aren’t we? Humans, we need order I suppose, but yes hmm, well it’s kind of just history. I have things from all over, it’s really my own private collection, and I just collect things that are interesting from historical periods. I even have a late 18th century toothbrush that I found on holiday in France once, went into an old home there, and was able to come across it.
“Also, I have plenty of other things. For example, a death mask from ancient tribal burial grounds, I have plenty of headdresses. Some robes from Japan, though I’ll have to admit readily that I’ve never really been to Japan unfortunately...”
Audrey grabbed a notepad and scribbled down some things. “So... 18th century toothbrush... tribal death mask, headdresses... Kimonos?” She had no idea what kind of cupcakes she was going to make. Probably some basic ones without having to try and follow along with the ‘history’ theme. “Do you have any colors you prefer, or shall I use my best judgement?”
“Best judgment is fine. Enjoy!” He then turned and made his way out of the bakery and came to a stop on the sidewalk outside. He then spun around a few times before taking off along the right, tapping a random person on the shoulder and asking them what sort of colors of cupcakes they’d like at a historical function, then he returned, “Red!” Then spun away and took off down another direction, before spinning, and heading in the opposing direction quickly.
