It had been a number of years since Portia had seen Callisto. She had been part of a larger make up department film crew and just starting out really. A far cry from everything she had been doing since. Now she was leading the department and throughly enjoying herself. She had been surprised to see Callisto's name in the net, she never thought the other woman would have moved to California. But she was glad for the chance to catch up.
Having text her earlier in the week they had arranged to meet over coffee and this was now where Portia was waiting, her prompt timing something that hadn't changed over the years.
Callisto's un-promptness had not however. She strolled into the cafe a few minutes late and took her sunglasses off to look around the shop, spotting Portia at a table by the window. It had been a while since she'd seen the woman, their differing personalities seeming to compliment each other well and she was looking forward to catching up. She made her way over to the young woman and kissed her on the cheek to greet her. "Portia, its been too long," she slid into the seat opposite her.
"It really has" she agreed smiling as the other woman sat, "How have you been Callisto?" she asked, "I admit I was surprised to see you had moved here"
"Industry's been slowing down up there," Callisto explained. "And as much I would love to stay and support it, a girl's gotta eat," she told the woman. "What do you want! My shout."
Portia nodded, she understood that. Nowadays you had to go where the work was even if it wasn't precisely where you wanted to be. "Oh let me get these" Portia insisted, "A welcome to California coffee" she added with a grin.
“Sure?” Callisto asked, just to check. “In that case I’ll have a cappuccino please,” she smiled.
“Of course” Portia smiled, “I’ll be right back” she added as she stood and moved over to the counter. Placing the order she thanked the barista who made up their order quickly and she returned to the table placing the drinks down.
Callisto checked her phone quickly while Portia was away from the table. She was hoping her agent was going to contact her at some point today regarding a job, she’d said she potentially had something on the books for her so Callisto was hopeful.
When Portia returned she locked the screen and smiled up at the girl, “Thanks, sorry, gotta keep an eye out when the agent says they might have something, y’know?” she referred to the phone beside her saucer.
“Oh of course” Portia smiled, “I know what it’s like. I’ll keep an ear out at work, I’m back in the film biz too at the moment”
“I’d appreciate that, thanks,” Callisto poured a sugar into her cup and stirred slowly. “What project you working on at the moment then?”
Portia told her about Thor’s film, “Originally I expected to be on the secondary team, I mean it’s been awhile since I’d worked on a set but I’m actually leading the secondary team” she smiled, “I guess something on my CV impressed them”
“You impressed them I’ll bet,” Callisto grinned at her, pointing her spoon at the woman before licking it and dropping it on the table. “I always admired what you could do with covering bruises,” she winked. With Callisto’s fair complexion it had always been hard for make-up artists to cover up any bruises she acquired during fight sequences, but Portia seemed to have a magic way with the make-up.
Portia laughed, "Lucky I knew what to do, what with the amount you used to have" she grinned, make up and hair had always come naturally to her. The way she saw it everything was part of the styling process.
“Not my fault!” Callisto defended herself. “I can’t help it if I’m committed to the role,” she grinned with a little shrug.
"Extremely committed" she agreed, "In fact I'd say I've not yet come across anybody as dedicated to getting beaten up as you"
“Let’s be fair,” Callisto picked up her coffee cup. “I probably did more beating than being beaten,” she pointed out with a smirk.
"True" Portia agreed, "Actually the harder part of my job was covering up the damage you did to others"
Callisto threw her head back and laughed, “Oh! Those were the days!” She smiled ruefully, sniffing her coffee for a second. “So what else have you been up to? How did you end up in LA?”
"I went out to London with the US Olympic team, that was so much fun" Portia replied, "I've always considered California home, I have a number of friends who live here and its got such a great feel to it"
“Hmm...” Callisto agreed. “I must admit, it does have a certain...quality to it that I may learn to like,” she smiled, gazing out of the window at the passers by. “So the Olympic team, eh? How’d you score that gig?”
“Oh just wait until the dreams start” Portia told her with a knowing smile, “A friend of mine landed the job and recommended me. I, naturally, jumped at the chance. It was great fun though extremely busy” She’d loved the atmosphere and camaraderie of it all and the athletes she had worked with were good friends.
"Dreams?" Callisto asked curiously as she sipped her coffee, she hadn't heard of those. She hissed at the temperature of the drink, "You've got great friends if they can land you a job like that."
"Oh yes, has nobody mentioned the dream phenomenon that happens around here?" she asked, "Almost everybody has some kind of dream life. Some people think its like a past life others think its just dreams but some people have connecting dreams too. Like myself and my friend Haymitch. We share dreams about the same world"
“Thats...kind of creepy...” Callisto winced over the rim of her coffee cup. “I’ve not really had a chance to speak to anyone since I’ve got here, you know me,” she quirked an eyebrow at the thought. “Makin’ friends, wherever I go, just makin’ friends.”
“I guess. Everybody around here is pretty much used to it now” Portia confessed with a smile, “Oh I do. But I think you’ll settle in well here. People are generally laid back.”
“I believe you,” Callisto agreed. “I met a really nice girl at the gym last week, she just started running a trekking group here and we got on really well,” she smiled.
"See" Portia grinned taking a sip of her drink, "That's already a great start. Even if trekking sounds like far too much hard work" she joked.
“What can I say, you shop, I trek,” Callisto shrugged with a grin.
"And together we're a great team" Portia finished off with a laugh.
“Well here’s hoping,” Callisto checked her phone for messages from her agent again. “Oh, we may have lift off...” she pressed the screen to open the email and quickly read it. “Well, whadya know, I have an audition with some...Jon Snow? Heard of him?”
"Heard of him but I don't know him personally" she replied, "Well done and good luck. When is it?" She asked.
Callisto nodded, it was a long shot if Portia knew him. “Late next week by the looks of it,” she told her, putting her phone back on the table and picking up her coffee, waiting for Portia to take a drink. “Guess I’ll just have to go back to whoring for the next week,” she quietly teased with a grin before sipping her coffee demurely like nothing had happened.
“Oh how exciting” Portia said before spluttering on her coffee, “You’re absolutely terrible” she told her friend as she wiped her mouth with a napkin.
Callisto grinned, reaching for another napkin to wipe any coffee on the table. “I know, but you missed me,” she teased.
“That I cannot deny” she grinned, “It’s definitely more entertaining with you around”
“I hope so,” Callisto pretended to ponder the idea. “I definitely intend to have my fair amount of fun,” she grinned. “What’s the best place to get a drink round here?”
“As you should” she agreed, “You should meet my friend Haymitch, I think you two would get along. There’s a few nice places around but I have to admit I don’t really go drinking too often”
"Probably for the best, knowing my luck I'd end up in jail just when I need to be at that audition," Callisto only half joked, she knew if she drank too much it was a real possibility.
“Yeah let’s not do that” Portia grinned, “Not the best impression to make”
Callisto smiled demurely, "Yeah..." It really shouldn't be so hard to stay out of trouble, should it? she thought to herself. "So how are things in your life? Any lovers?" she teased with relish.
It shouldn’t but if anybody would find trouble it would be Callisto. Portia blushed at the question instantly thinking of Alex, “I have a boyfriend. His name is Alex, he’s an inventor” she told her friend.
Portia had just split from her ex when she’d first met the other woman, and while she hadn’t told Callisto what had happened she thought the other woman might have an inclination that violence had been involved. Especially due to Portia’s strong insistence that she did not want to become involved with anybody for a long time.
“An inventor, eh?” Callisto considered it briefly. It was an unusual profession to align yourself in, very intriguing. “Tell me more,” she prompted.
“Well he’s an engineer and he runs his own Electronics shop but his passion is for inventing” she replied, smiling brightly as she spoke about Alex, “He’s so very clever, comes up with brilliant ideas.”
“Really,” Callisto sipped her coffee. “And he makes a living doing this?”
“Mostly through the electronics store” Portia told her, “But he’s working on inventions all the time”
“Huh,” Callisto gazed into her coffee as she thought about it some more. “It’s weird, y’know, you don’t think ‘inventors’, as such, really exist anymore,” she mused, eyeing the tiny fly trying to land on the lip of her cup.
Portia nodded, "Oh I know. It was very exciting when I found out" she had loved the idea and seeing his workshop had been brilliant. She really should visit him there more often.
“And what’s he like in the sack?” Callisto asked matter of factly.
"Callisto!" Portia exclaimed, blushing instantly at the question as it brought images of Alex's large member and the multiple orgasms he'd given her to her mind.
“That good, eh?” Callisto laughed as she watched Portia’s face turn bright red.
"Beyond amazing" Portia told her quietly, "And that's all you’re getting" though she was smiling.
“Uh huh...” Callisto watched her over the top of her cup with a grin. “We’ll see,” she predicted.
Portia sighed, her friend could be an evil woman sometimes. "I'm sure you'll have your own love life to enjoy soon enough" she replied.
“Ugh!” Callisto rolled her eyes and sighed. “Yeah, whatever!”
Portia laughed, “Still loving ‘em and leaving ‘em are we?” she teased kindly.
“More just leaving ‘em lately,” Callisto told her grimly. “Men are such pigs,” she said bitterly into her coffee.
“Oh sweetheart, what happened?” Portia asked, concern in her tone.
“Usual,” Callisto sighed. “Got into a semi-permanent thing with this guy, only to find out he’s been seeing not one other girl, but two and he had been stealing money from my stash,” she told the other woman. “Suffice it to say...his girlfriends were visiting him in hospital for the next week or so,” she put her coffee down and heaved another sigh. “After he dropped the charges I decided I needed a change, came down here on my bike and...voila,” she waved her hands vaguely at herself.
“Urgh some men are complete asses” she said patting her friends hand, “I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But here you have a brand new start. No asses from here on”
“Jury’s still out on that one sweetheart,” Callisto told her grimly. “But...in the spirit of being re-united with an old friend...” she breathed out a heavy breath. “I will try and be optimistic,” she smiled.
