Tonks had absolutely no idea what she wanted her wedding dress to look like. Okay, no, that was a bit of a lie. She’d like it to have red in it. She needed to talk to Mac about details, but they were still on such an engagement high that whenever they started to talk about it they ended up getting distracted. She had to admit that since the proposal she had started to look at things on the internet and in magazines and she loved the idea of a red and green theme to tie in with her engagement ring. And of course the apples of the orchard.
So yes, she had a vague idea of what she was looking for and she was hoping that AJ wouldn’t mind wearing green.
AJ had done a ton of wedding research. She was more than willing to share all of her research with her good friend--and soon to be sister-in-law. She had a huge binder filled with all sorts of dresses, flower arrangements, cakes, that sort of thing. Lots of wedding photography, too. She wanted to make sure that she had the best wedding pictures in the world.
Anyway, she and Tonks came to the wedding dress shop that was having the huge sale, and were looking through the off-the-rack dresses for the day. She stopped, pulling one out in Tonks’ size. “This... maybe too poofy. What do you think?”
Tonks considered it before shaking her head, “Too poofy” she agreed, “I don’t think I want anything too fussy” she added looking through the rack. Everything was very white but she did notice a flash of color and pulling it out saw it was red. “Oh, I’ve been thinking about red” she told AJ with a bright smile.
“Oooh,” AJ said, nodding and grinning. “I saw one over here with some red in it.” It was still in Tonks’ size, too. She reached over and pulled another dress (wrapped in plastic, as they all were) off the rack.
Tonks grinned, “I’m going to try them both” she nodded, “Then you can tell me what you think” She waited for AJ’s agreement before nipping into the changing room to try them on, she started with the one AJ had picked out. She wasn’t sure about the flowers, they weren’t really in keeping with her theme idea.
Yeah, it would be a lot better if the dress had apples on it, or something, instead of flowers. But it was a nice cut, AJ thought. “It’s gorgeous, Tonks,” she said, stepping forward to tug a little at the skirt, making it straight. “I don’t know if it’s perfect, but it’s absolutely stunning.”
“It feels okay” Tonks nodded, “But not quite right. I sort of want grown up but still me, kind of unusual you know?” After looking in the mirror once more and deciding it was not but not her dress she went to try on the first one she had seen.
AJ nodded. “I know exactly what you mean.” She moved back to sit down on the chair and wait. It was busy in there today, and she watched another couple of bride-to-be’s coming out of the dressing rooms with either sad or excited looks on their faces, then turned back to wait for Tonks.
“Okay” she said as she came out, “I don’t like the shoulders, maybe I need strapless?” she said looking at AJ for her opinion.
“You’ve definitely got the shoulders and arms for strapless.” AJ said, climbing to her feet and crossing to where Tonks was standing in front of the three-way mirror. “I like the cut of this one, too. And the length. It’s good. But you’re right about the straps.”
Tonks nodded, “I do love the red in it” she mused before grinning at AJ, “I can’t believe I’m trying on wedding dresses”
AJ laughed. “Welcome to the club! I couldn’t believe it, either.” She shook her head a little bit, grinning. “Should I keep looking? I’ve got an idea now. Something with a splash of red. I’m sure there’s bound to be something here. And for bridesmaid dresses? Do you want to look for those, too?”
Tonks laughed too, “It’s a pretty awesome club” she said before nodding, “I know I might not find my dream dress here, I’d have to be pretty lucky but a couple more and we might get a better idea. Oh yes, I thought maybe green?” she suggested before seizing AJ’s hands in hers in realisation, “You’ll be my maid of honor won’t you? I just realised I’ve been assuming and haven’t actually asked you properly” Tonks had been so caught up in it all that she’d been very remiss in that aspect.
“Green works for me!” AJ said. She loved all the apple colors. Green, yellow, red. Her own wedding colors were Red and Yellow, so that made sense! Then she gasped and reached forward to wrap her arms around Tonks in a tight hug. “Of course I will!” She gave a laugh, so excited, nearly squee’ing with joy.
Tonks laughed happily and returned the hug, “Thank you” she said smiling brightly, “I know it’s a little unconventional but I think I’m going to ask Fred and George to be my bridesmaids or bridesbachelors, they’ve been my friends for so long and other than you I don’t really have any close girlfriends. I think green waistcoats could look great”
AJ laughed. “I think that’s amazing. I think you should do it!” AJ said, nodding. “Though, if I’m going to be by your side, I think I’ll have to be your Matron of Honor, since I’ll be married then.” She said, then gave another squee, dancing on the spot. “I can’t believe we’re both getting married!!”
Tonks was relieved that AJ thought the idea was a good one, now all she had to do was ask the boys. Though she was sure they’d say yes. “Oh of course you will” she nodded in realisation, “We’re going to be wives”
“It’s so weird!” AJ said, though she was grinning brightly. “Weird and good, and OH MY GOD WE’RE GOING TO BE SISTERS!” She said, as if the thought just occurred to her.
Tonks laughed, “We are” she nodded bouncing a little on the spot, “We’re going to be the best sisters”
“We are!” AJ said, laughing. Then, “ooh! Wait look at that one!” She grabbed onto Tonks’ arm and dragged her across the room. Of course, she had to beat off another woman and glare at a second to get to the dress. The sale was making these women go completely insane!
"Oh AJ, well spotted, its beautiful. Lets see how it looks on me" she bounced excitedly, the dress was incredible and her friend and soon to be sister had done a great job of spotting and then protecting it.
AJ nodded “I think it’s beautiful! Come on, go change. I’ll wait right here.” She was looking over at the bridesmaid dresses, imagining Fred and George Weasley (who she’d only met briefly) wearing... what, waistcoats? They’d look dapper, that was certain.
Tonks knew that AJ would look beautiful and Fred and George would look very handsome too. And as she slipped into the dress she felt that maybe she would look amazing as well, she loved the dress. She stepped from the changing room with a smile, “Well, what do you think?” she asked turning to the side slightly so AJ could see the color down the back.
AJ gasped at the sight of that dress on Tonks. Both hands came up to clap over her mouth. “Oh, Sugar Cube.” She said, then stepped forward. “It’s absolutely perfect.”
A huge smile spread across her face, one she was pretty sure she wouldn’t get rid of for a while. “It’s the dress AJ” she said happily, “It really is perfect, thank you”
“You’re very welcome!” AJ gave a laugh, then jumped up and down and squealed.
