The redheaded woman behind the counter was very friendly. Severus wondered how many people bought into her friendliness and spent several dollars more than they were planning on it because she suggested a second pastry or an upgrade in their beverage. He was going with coffee, black, and no food.
He turned to wait for Gold to order, then paid for both of their ‘breakfasts’ before Gold could even reach for a wallet.
“Oh,” said Gold, clearly rather touched by Snape’s gesture of paying, even as they waited on their coffees -- his was black as well, although he’d add a touch of cream for the sake of living on the edge once he got it. “Thank you, Severus.”
Admittedly, it was nice to meet people outside of his shop or office for things that weren’t just taking their money.
“Sure.” It wasn’t as if the couple of bucks for a cup of coffee was going to make or break Severus’ wallet. He knew it wouldn’t break Gold’s, either, but the gesture meant more than the money. And next time, Gold could pay. It was something that friends do. Did. Something that friends...
Look at that. Severus made a friend! Outside of Lily, his wife, and Regulus.
“Shall we sit?” Sev asked, moving to a table near the counter. He didn’t have that long before he had to be in to work, and he knew that Gold had to open the shop, too.
“Certainly!” Gold grabbed his coffee upon having lightened it up a bit and they both found a quiet little table in the corner. “So? How’s the wife and kid?” It was not unlike Gold to know major and minor details about people. It was a good part of his trade -- as a politician, anyway.
“They’re both well, thank you.” Severus said, slipping into his chair at the table. He removed the lid from his coffee cup to let the hot water cool just slightly. “Romana and I are preparing to expand our family. It’s about time for us to give Daisy a brother or sister.” It was a big step, but they’d been talking about it for a while now. Hopefully within the year Romana would be pregnant again.
“Interesting,” said Mr. Gold, in a way that probably sounded like he was, in fact, interested. In some regards he was -- it was always nice to know what other people were up to. In other ways, not so much, because Snape wasn’t so much of a friend where he really needed to know about his hopes for reproduction. But there it was, anyway. “Well, good luck to you, certainly.” He crossed his legs, sipped his coffee.
“Thank you. And you? I don’t know much of your family.” Severus should have paid more attention to Gold’s personal life, shouldn’t he? “I assume you do have a life outside of your shop,” he said, almost teasing. “How are things aside from work?”
“I’m afraid I have no family to speak of,” Gold said with a half shrug. He didn’t seem particularly devastated by the fact, but he supposed he wasn’t really happy about it either. Still, he was a little old to be worrying about it now, wasn’t he? “But things are not bad otherwise.”
“That’s good.” Severus said with a nod. He leaned back a little in his chair, surveying the coffee shop. “Do you have anything interesting coming up?” He asked, finding that making small talk was exceedingly difficult for him. Though, it wasn’t exactly something he was learning about now. He’d known for years that he didn’t enjoy wasting time with idle chit chat.
Gold was of a similar persuasion, which made it extra funny that they were both attempting it, anyway. Perhaps they might have been better off drinking their coffee across from each other with the paper. “Mm,” he said, sipping his coffee a little lazily. “Thinking of taking a step or two up the political latter. But it seems so tedious some days.”
Severus did enjoy a good Sudoku. He raised both eyebrows, though at the mention of politics. “Well, that sounds interesting. How is it tedious?”
“Running a campaign is... tiresome for higher office. Although if I made mayor, it might be worth it, hm?” Then again, there was all that time he’d have to spend away from his shop to consider.
“I’m fairly confident that you’d have my vote,” Severus said with a little smirk. “Though, I’d have to hear your stance on the issues at hand, I’m sure.” He’d never considered politics, himself. He didn’t like people enough to want to work with them so closely.
Politics were a mess; but Gold did have a certain charisma about him that made people listen when he spoke. More so, he knew when to speak and when not to. He smiled, lopsided and amused. “Well, I’m fairly confident I’d thank you for it. I’ll have to work with a few people to put up a good platform. I’m not meant to say I just want to rule everything, am I?” That was a joke, thank you.
Severus chuckled. “No. I highly doubt most would agree to that particular slogan. Some would, I’m sure, but definitely not enough to win you an election.” He lifted his coffee cup for a sip. “Sounds interesting, though? Politics? I’ve never really been much for it.”
Gold’s smile was this short of sly and he gave half a nod. “It’s interesting enough. I honestly have a preference for my shop -- but one thing pays the bills on the other, as the saying goes.” That wasn’t really a saying. But it was now. “Sometimes it’s nice to have a hand in new legislations and things. Mostly it’s a lot of legal nonsense though.” He shrugged, aware it was probably boring.
“The new legislation part sounds interesting,” Severus said. “But it seems like a lot of it is trying to please no one but seem like you’re pleasing everyone.”
“And you said you didn’t like politics,” Gold said with a half indulgent sort of smile. “Clearly, you’re a natural.”
Severus snorted into his coffee. “Just because I understand it doesn’t mean I’d be any good at it.” He added, smirking.
“Touche, Mr. Snape. Touche.” Gold could only smile.
