Draco had been surprised to receive Ty Lee’s text message and it hadn’t taken him long to work out what she was planning. He’d help, of course he would she was family now but he couldn’t help but worry too. If it worked she’d still be putting herself in a dangerous position and if it didn’t he wasn’t sure what she would do. He could only hope she’d have a little more sense than Azula.
Ty Lee loved her wife, but many things had a little more sense than Azula. She was mad, and she felt as though Khamul had done her an incredibly grievous wrong, but she was anything but stupid, no matter how hard she pretended to be. If this didn’t work, she’d find some other way to take care of Khamul. Simple as that.
She did look a little deranged when she knocked on Draco and Zuko’s door. It was just because she needed a shower and sleep. After leaving the hospital she’d gone straight on to find Khamul, rather than taking care of her hygiene needs. He seemed to be holed up in a hotel for now, she secretly hoped they’d let her use their shower, too.
Opening the door Draco ushered her in, "No offence but you look terrible" he told her, "How are you holding up?"
Ty Lee laughed a little. “Not great. It’s been rough. Thank you.” She smiled at him, a brief, strained smile. “I need a shower and a nap like nobody’s business. How are you and Zuko?”
Draco nodded, "You're welcome to use the shower and nap here" he offered, "We're doing okay. Zuko was in shock for a while. We're just worried about Azula now, and you" he added.
Ty Lee nodded. “Thank you. I can only promise you I’ll be very careful. What Khamul has done can’t go unpunished, and he can’t be allowed to do it again.” She took a deep breath. “I’ll clean up first, if you don’t mind. I have to get in close to do the chi blocking technique, and that’ll be less terrible for you if I’ve had a shower.”
"I agree completely, but it needs to be done with no more harm to our family" Draco replied, "We've all spent too much time at the hospital"
He nodded, "Of course" he said easily, leading her to the bathroom he pointed out the towels and shampoo, etc. "Take as long as you need. Want any tea or coffee?"
“Coffee. Tea isn’t strong enough.” She found the bathroom and got ready to shower.
Draco headed to the kitchen while Ty Lee showered. He got out the percolator to make her a proper coffee, it was so much better than instant and she needed something good right now.
Ty Lee cleaned up and put her clothes back on, and padded out, inhaling the smell of coffee eagerly. “MMM, so good!” She grinned brightly.
He looked up as she entered and smiled, "You already look better" he told her warmly before setting a fresh steaming cup in front of her.
“You’re my favorite.” Ty Lee said with a smile, before she sipped the coffee. “I feel better too, thank you.”
He chuckled, “Good” he said before drinking his own coffee, “So tell me more about this ‘chi blocking’ thing” he requested.
“Oh, okay. So chi is this life energy that flows through our body. Healthy bodies have uninhibited chi, it flows all through everywhere without being disturbed. There are certain points on the body that can disrupt the flow of chi, which temporarily stops parts of the body from working right. Chi also powers any kind of special abilities in our world. Even the most powerful bender is helpless if their chi is blocked.”
“Right” Draco nodded, digesting the information, “And you can do that here? I mean you’ve blocked Azula?” he guessed that’s how she knew she could do it. “And if the theory is the same the magic I have is within me, even though I have to direct it with a wand, so blocking my chi will essentially block my magic”
“I didn’t have time to block Azula before she was hurt.” Ty Lee regretted that, too. Damn Khamul. “The hope is that it will work that way, yes. I’d like to test on a couple different non-benders, but I only have so much time. It causes a little disorientation, and I guess weird sensations until it wears off, which only takes a few minutes.”
“I get the feeling she would have gone after him even if her ability had been blocked” he patted her hand. “It’s fine” he assured her, “I trust you not to do me damage” he grinned, “And if it helps take him down then I’m all for it”
Ty Lee giggled. “I wouldn’t hurt you, you’re my favorite!” She smiled brightly. “Okay, ready? I’ll catch you if you get wobbly.”
He shot her a smile, “Ready” replied, raising his eyebrow at her ‘catch you’ comment before grinning. “So you just want me to cast a spell right? And you’ll do whatever you do to stop it?” he removed his wand from his pocket as he spoke.
“Yep.” She nodded, stretching a little. it would be weird doing this without the context of a fight around it, but she didn’t want to fight Draco.
“Right okay then” Draco decided levitating one of the dish towels would probably be safest in case whatever Ty Lee did worked. So taking hold of his wand he stood and pointed it before murmuring, “Wingardium leviosa”
She moved as soon as he began to speak, rapidly prodding points at his shoulders and legs, then a central one in the chest.
It was quite impressive how quickly she moved, not that he had much time to appreciate it as he lost all feeling in his body. Essentially he became paralysed while standing up. It was an interesting feeling.
Ty Lee held him steady, and smiled. “So did your spell work?” She didn’t actually know what he was trying to do.
“Not at all” he told her, “I can’t actually move, is that supposed to happen?” he asked, not yet concerned.
“Yes. Uh, it goes away after a few minutes.” She grabbed a kitchen chair and manipulated Draco so he was sitting down in it.
“Okay” Draco said, smiling his thanks as she maneuvered him. “Well I think we can safely say you can block my magic. I completed the spell but nothing happened. I’ll show you what should have happened once this wears off” he told her.
She nodded, and went back to her coffee. “Okay. I haven’t seen people do magic before.” She was pretty curious.
“What Zuko and Azula can do is a kind of magic” Draco said, feeling a tingling sensation run through his arms and legs but still unable to move them, “At least that’s how I see it”
“I guess? We don’t call it that, really, but maybe it’s just because there seem to be benders everywhere.” Ty Lee was glad that wasn’t the case in the real world. Benders could be really arrogant assholes. It was the reason she learned chi blocking in the first place.
“Maybe. I mean I don’t think my magic wouldn’t be half as impressive if so many others could do it” he commented.
Ty Lee shrugged. “I think the benders sometimes think there are a lot more of them than there are, and a lot of times it seems like they think being able to bend excuses them from following the same rules as everyone else.”
“Oh I think that can be the same for any group of people who have a certain amount of power” Draco told her, his fingers twitching, “In my dreams I’m part of a group who want to rid the world of people who don’t have power, who treat them as second class citizens because they weren’t lucky enough to be born with magic”
She nodded, sipping her coffee. “Yeah, there’s a lot of that in my dreams. It doesn’t help that almost all the leaders of nations are benders. There used to be an entire nation that only had benders in it, because they were nomadic. I always wondered what happen to all the babies born without bending. It does happen, sometimes.”
“It’s a terrible thought” Draco said, “I’m striving to never become the person in my dreams. It helps to have Zuk” he smiled, before trying and succeeding in moving his arm. It felt like pins and needles were stuck in it but at least he could move.
“Yes, I’d think so.” She smiled at Draco. Zuko was occassionally arrogant and unthinking, but she was pretty sure he’d be like that even without his bending.
"Okay definitely wearing off" he told her stretching his shoulders out. "Pretty effective" He flexed his fingers before grasping his wand once more.
Ty Lee smiled. “I’m glad. It’ll help with Khamul.” She hopped up and sat on the kitchen counter. “So what were you trying to do?”
"I'm glad too" he told her warmly, "Especially if it means less charge of you getting hurt"
Winking at her he redid the spell and this time levitated a number of items in the kitchen. "Ta da" he laughed.
“Oh, that’s cool.” Ty Lee said with a grin, bouncing over to examine the floating dishes. It wasn’t at all like airbending, they were hanging in the still air.
Draco chuckled, "Thanks, it can be pretty handy sometimes. There are hundreds of spells for all sorts of things"
“You must spend a lot of time learning them.” She noted. “Though bending school is pretty tough. I went there, but I never took bending classes, of course.”
"Yeah, in the dreams we attend secondary school to learn it and then there are jobs that require more learning" he told her, "So they had classes for blocking too?"
“Not exactly.” Ty Lee shifted a little as she thought. “Since I was sitting out bending practice I spent time with an old guy who taught me how to see auras. Once I could see auras, I started to understand how chi worked, and then I began practicing. Eventually the old guy admitted he had the same thoughts I did about chi blocking, and we kind of worked it out together.”
“Oh wow” Draco was impressed, “So you’re pretty awesome, not that I didn’t know this already but developing the whole idea into an actual ability is very cool”
“Well, I had a lot of help, and I knew it could be done.” She shrugged. “But with benders in power the ability was mysteriously lost.” She wiggled her fingers, mockingly. “But whatever, it’ll help me here and now, and that’s all I really care about.” She smiled again.
“Absolutely” Draco nodded, “I’m just glad it worked. Means we can worry a little less about you. A little”
Ty Lee smiled. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. I have backup, and he’s amazing.” She hopped off the counter and gave Draco a hug. “Thank you again. I’m going to go check on Azula. Tell Zuko I said hi.”
“Okay, well good” he replied returning the hug, “Be careful. And let us know when if you can so Zuk and I can be with Azula”
“Will do.” She smiled, and bounced for the door. Now she knew her plan would work, and she was even more determined and confident that she could bring Khamul down.
