Who: Cersei Lannister & Robert Baratheon
What: Hello, darling, haven't you missed me?
When: Wednesday
Where: Cersei's place @ Newport
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete
How often had Cersei been nagging at him to 'get that disgusting filth' out of his body? And now that he had - for now at least - she wasn't even around. So typical of her highness. Drive a man to distraction and then vanish in a puff of smoke. Not that Robert had done it for her - he wasn't sure what made him think going into rehab was a good idea - but that wasn't important. The point was that he'd gone through quite a bit of trouble to straighten himself out and she didn't even have the decency to at least give him a ring.
They weren't a very happy couple. Weren't even much of a couple anymore since Cersei had moved to Newport. As he got dressed under the disapproving gaze of his butler, he wondered if they'd ever been happy together or if they'd always been driven by pure pragmatism and expediency. He didn't think it had been just that - he wasn't like that.
During the drive from LA to Newport, Robert dug through his fragmented memories of their shared past and didn't come up with anything useful. There was one thing he knew to be true, though. They weren't good for each other. Perhaps they never had been and getting married was the biggest mistake the two of them could have made. Cersei was a princess - maybe not by birth but Tywin Lannister might as well have been a king - and through marriage she'd become the Lady of House Baratheon. But she didn't have his name. All she had was a ring and a basket full of broken promises.
No, no, no. This, this wreckage they were trapped in, wasn't solely of Robert's making. They'd both had had a hand in building the ruins that surrounded them now.
As he got out of his car, and strolled up to Cersei's door, the tailored suit clinging to his slimmed down frame and the casual elegance with which he moved made it clear that the actor had yielded to one Lord Robert Baratheon who hadn't made an appearance in a very long time.
