"Lots of secrets filling these halls nowadays, Scott. More than normal for people like us. Logan leading a gang off to god knows where. Blood-stained clothes in the laundrey. To say nothing of what you've been up to, Miss Frost." Henry McCoy's eyes burned yellow in the dark room, "When I get back we're having it all out. Do you hear me? These secrets will kill us."
Sleep hadn't come for either of them. Eventually Emma had gone to stand at the window, and Scott got up to join her, putting his arms around her, "Emma, I."
"Don't."
"Emma, Hank was right."
"Scott, please stop.."
"No Emma," He threaded his fingers through hers. "We need to talk, and not just for the sake of the others. We need to do this for us. Because-"
Emma shrugged him off, "I said stop! I'm not going to do this now, Scott. Not for you. Not for anyone. So if you want to have your little heart to heart with Henry, then by all means do. Just leave me out of it."
He stared at her, expressionless save for the slight furrowing of his brows. Tears watered in Emma's eyes as she finished, "Are we clear?"
Scott slammed the door on his way out. He slept on the couch, which proved mildly embarassing when Megan, David and Hisako woke him. Emma was missing.
He found a note. She'd gone to kill a man. He tried to contact her psychically. He tried to get the Cuckoo's to find her.
Emma...Emma answer me, Dammit!
He opened the front door, and there she was.
"I couldn't do it. I couldn't leave without telling you face to face. Scott, I've done something exceedingly horrible and you deserve to know--"
He interrupted her. He had something to tell her first. He led her to Cerebra.
"How intimate."
He didn't smile, "It's psi-shielded. Now read my mind."
"Will you just listen to me?"
"After we're inside. Emma. Please."
She entered his mind, "You're being incredibly frustrating. I am trying to be open with you. Do you realize how hard that is for me? I have tried so hard to not be who I was. Who it is second nature for me to be."
It resembled a house, and he led her towards a black door marked with a red X, "I know, but you have to understand I'm not who I was anymore either."
"How is this about you again? You didn't even read my letter, did you?"
"I read enough of it to know you didn't think you were coming back. That's all I needed to know. I couldn't let this end hiding things from you."
He opened the door. It was an empty room, save for a black box in one corner, "I don't want there to be secrets between us anymore."
"You know I can't open it." Emma sounded frustrated. Maybe a little tired.
"I know. That's why I'm going to open it for you.
"Honestly, Scott. I don't care about what's inside. Whatever secrets you're keeping about Jean, they don't matter to me anymore," Emma protested. "Something is happening and you have to know the truth. What I've done..I'm going to show you everything. But please know, no matter what, I--"
"I know you do, Emma. I know." And he opened the box.
Scott jerked awake. He grasped for the rest of the dream but it faded before he could find out what was in that box, and what secrets they'd been keeping from each other. He fumbled in the dark as he realized he'd woken blind again, then sat on the floor cross-legged. He'd wait for his vision to return. As always, it returned, tinged as red as his visor in his dreams, and then the red faded, and he could see normally again. Resisting the urge to get a drink, he decided to take a drive to clear his head.
