Alex had booked a restaurant, found a movie, gotten tickets, and even managed to provide an invitation for a friend of Mavis’ to hang out with her while they were gone. They, being he and Lorna, were going on a date, a real one for once. He had this planned out and with hoped for the future on the rise, he was planning to work on making Lorna’s life a lot better, every step of the way.
As he finished dressing up, he checked the truck, and made sure it was ready, then came back in.
“Lorna? Ready?”
Lorna had a nice dress on, and her jewelry was floating in a little cloud in front of her while she picked what went best with her outfit. She grinned at Alex and shooed it back into her jewelry box. If nothing looked good, she’d go with nothing. “I am. You look nice.” She bounced over to him, hugging him tight.
“You do too, love.” He smirked as he hugged her close. She was gorgeous. “Come on. Let’s go have some fun.” And he led the way out with her, toward the truck, freshly washed and detailed, and handed her in before hopping in himself and sending them shooting down the road. “I’ve been looking forward to this.”
“I have too.” Lorna said with a smile. “So much. Our lives have been so crazy, recently. More so than normal.” She hopped into the truck, opening Alex’s door for him as he came around.
Alex nodded. “True facts. I hate how crazy everything has been.” Driving them down the road, he smiled. “At least now we can go onward and have fun. Alex Rogan will watch over Mavis, and since they are friends, and science nuts together, we can relax.”
“That is my plan entirely.” Lorna said with a sigh. “I feel like it’s been forever since we went on a date, anyway. What’s the plan?” She would go anywhere with him, it didn’t matter where or why.
“I found an Italian restaurant that is next to a classics movie theater, which is playing Casablanca, And next to that is a roller rink with bumper cars for adults. I thought a triple threat might be nice, especially since we’ve been without it for so long.”
“Oooh, someone’s going for extra credit tonight.” Lorna said with a laugh. “That all sounds amazing. I can’t wait!”
Alex waggled his eyebrows at her. “Got to earn my ooomphs with you, with a guest around.” He smirked at her. “I hope you like it.” He drove in silence for a moment. “I have to admit, I am kind of nervous, and worried and scared and yet bouncy about all the changes. You are the one thing that keeps me grounded.”
“It’s been so insane.” Lorna noted with a sigh. “I hope things settle down for a little while. I could use the break from the drama!”
“Meeee tooo.” Then he paused as he stopped at a red light. “I have started dreaming again, I think, but the dreams are out of focus.”
“Out of focus?” Lorna asked. “How?” She worried about the dreams. They rarely brought anything good. Her dream self was more messed up than she was!
“Dunno. Like... fuzzy. Details are completely out of focus lately. There’s one where I am working hard, helping people, and another where I am reorganizing and leading something, but I can’t recall any of the details of them.” It bugged Alex.
“Weird. But that sounds like something you’d do. Helping people is important to you in all the worlds.” She smiled softly. “I haven’t had any other dreams. I’m a little worried, honestly.”
Alex smiled softly and reached out with one arm and poked her a little. “I can hope that means you wont for awhile. Maybe you achieved a milestone?” Or something.
Lorna shrugged. “I’m still missing years of memories, so I know it’s not over.”
“Me too, and... I don’t know. Sometimes I don’t want the rest.” He sighed as he drove. “The restaurant isn’t far away. And for tonight, we are together, and in love.”
“That’s all that matters.” Lorna said with a soft smile. “It’s more than enough.” She squeezed his leg.
“It’s the world, really. You are more important than dreams, careers, and a family I barely know and am only barely now getting to learn about. I am very happy to have you in my life, Lorna.” He smiled wider.
Lorna blushed and laughed. “I am the luckiest woman alive, without a doubt.” She wished he wasn’t driving, so she could hug him.
“We are lucky together.” He smiled as he turned again and saw the place ahead. “There she blows!”
“Thank goodness, I’m hungry!” Lorna said with a grin. “What kind of food does this place have?”
He parked and grinned as he stole a kiss. “Mostly American, but a large portion of various dinner meals. So some pasta, some crazy meals from various places.”
“Works for me!” Lorna said with a smile. The stolen kiss was cute. He was an amazing person. “I can’t believe how lucky I am. I feel like you’re the most amazing man in the world.”
“Nah. I’m just a man who is growing up, and likes the idea of growing old with you. I think anyone can be awesome when they are ready. Like you. You make me proud to call you my girlfriend, every day.” He nodded, and then led her in.
Lorna smiled sweetly, taking his hand as he led her inside. “I love you, Alex. You make me feel like I can do anything, and all I ever want is to be around you all the time, forever.”
Alex smiled softly. “Ditto, babe.” He bounced and moved with her into the restaurant. The maitre d led them to a table and settled them with wine, and water, and menus. The they were alone and Alex raised his glass to her.
“To us, and to finding our way together.”
Lorna tapped his glass, smiling brightly. “To us and our future together.” She drank the wine, which was really quite tasty. “I’m looking at buyers for the shop, now.”
He sipped and smiled at her softly. “You are amazing. I am waiting on schedules, but slotted for an interview in two weeks, if nothing opens before then. The end of the year is when they need to hire new people for Summer and Fall, but also their busiest time, obviously. Things are apparently a little wild at UC: I, right now.”
Lorna nodded, smiling brightly. “You’ll get the job. I have faith in you.” She reached across the table for Alex’s hand. “I’m looking forward to seeing you around more often. I submitted some resumes to research labs, and a couple grant proposals. The botany program is full up at most of the colleges around here, but I figure I can work for a gardening company or beg Navi for a job if things go bad.”
He squeezed her hand and smiled at her. “Sounds cool. Hey, have you thought of trying nepotism and asking Emma if Frost Enterprises has a Botany research lab?”
Lorna chuckled. “Yeah, and I put in an application at the Ranch, too, to work as a science teacher.”
Alex smiled, sipping his wine, then leaned back. “For the first time in a long time, it seems like we are working toward peace and hope, and a good life. I like this, a lot. I want this, with you.” He nodded. “Dreams will come and go, and powers and sicknesses, but whatever happens in them, I love you.”
Lorna nodded, and that felt like her cue. She reached into her tiny crocheted purse and pulled out a small, black velvet box. She slid out of her chair and knelt in front of Alex. “I want to be yours forever, Alex, in every way possible.” She handed him the box. “Please say you’ll marry me.”
Alex gaped, then smiled, and grinned at her. Extending his hand to her, he nodded, tears in his eyes. “Damn straight. Yes. I will marry you, Lorna Dane.”
Lorna put the ring on his finger, a gold band with a row of small sapphires in the middle. “You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world, then.” She bounced to her feet and hugged him tight.
Alex smiled softly and bent his head to kiss her and hugged her tight as he rose to meet her, kissing her again and again as there was applause around them.
“Wow. And I am definitely the happiest and luckiest man alive.”
