Emma was grateful to be alive. She’d hugged and kissed and clung to both her husband and her son, but she wasn’t ready to be relieved just yet. She had one other thing to check on, the most important thing she could think of. As soon as she could get away she went to the nursery for privacy and called Thor, pressing her other hand against her belly, as though she might be able to feel the child if she pressed hard enough.
There was a crackle like thunder, and then the closest window shimmered and Thor’s face appeared on it, looking concerned. “Emma? Are you okay? I can sense your distress. What happened?”
He was on his way, but sent his image and self ahead, of himself. It was a new thing he had just learned.
Five minutes ago.
Emma yelled when she saw his face in the window. “Oh my God, I wasn’t expecting that. Uh, I need to know if I’m still pregnant, something happened and I’m extremely worried, now.” It sounded stupid now that she said it out loud, but she felt it was a legitimate worry. She’d just shattered, after all.
Thor chuckled. “Sorry. You called me, with such urgency.” He eyed her, and listened. “Of course. I’ll be there within minutes, and I’ll be able to tell, then. What happened?” He looked at her with concern. He knew she did not get upset easily.
Emma sighed, leaning against the dresser/changing table. “I can turn to diamond, if you remember from Pepper and Tony’s wedding. In my dreams someone shoots me and I shatter. It happened here, I was in bed with Scott and suddenly it’s the next day and Scott and Nate were so upset.” She closed her eyes, trying not to feel guilty for that. “I’m terrified it hurt the child. This baby means everything to me.”
THor nodded, wincing, and then smiled wider. “Brace yourself.” There wa a sonic boom far off, and thunder across the sky, and then Thor was there, simply suddenly, outside her window, floating as if in water.
“Hello, Emma.” Compassion and warmth shone in his eyes. “May I come in?”
Emma went to the window and opened it for Thor. “Yes, please come in.” She looked worried, though fine other than that.
Thor stepped in and then hugged her, gently, and smiled softly. “Sit, and breathe deeply, and let me Look at you.” He gestured to the nearby chair.
Emma sat in the rocking chair, hugging herself a little. “Okay.” She didn’t know what she’d do if anything happened to her child. It wasn’t even the size of a kiwi fruit yet and she was already extremely attached to it.
Thor knelt before her and let his Sight open up, then smiled as he felt that life beating strongly. He made sure, probing it and feeling it’s life essence, and nodded. “Your baby is fine.” One hand of his gently touched her belly, and pressed a touch of his godly life force to her and the child, to calm both, and to give them more strength.
Emma did calm, a great deal. She put her hands over his. “Thank you.” There was a lot of restrained emotion in those two words. She had to close her eyes to keep from crying in relief. “You’re a good friend, Thor.”
Thor blushed and gave her a warm look. “I am glad to be so, my friend.” He gently rubbed her hands, and smiled. “You will be a wonderful mother, even more than you are now.”
Emma kissed his cheek, and stood again. “I think I need to get back to my husband and son before they die of angst, would you like some coffee before you go?”
“No thanks. Go, and be with them, and be happy. I will see you again soon, perhaps for drinks and sandwiches next week?” Thor bowed to her and turned toward the window.
“Yes, I’d like that.” Emma stood and followed him. “My treat.”
“Sounds good to me. Until next time, my friend.” He winked at her and shot up into the sky. It had been an interesting week, already.
