Oliver,

I hope it's all right to use your first name.

I wanted to inquire after your own health, and to ask a small favor, albeit one that might sound slightly odd. Would it be possible for me to borrow a key to your home and get Alice's rough measurements from her closet?

The reason I ask is because I've had the idea to create a piece of clothing for her for some time, but it never seemed appropriate. I would love to try and finish it soon, but to do that, I would either need her to have a fitting - obviously quite impossible - or obtain her measurements another way. Ideally, I would like to surprise her.

I've decided to be as optimistic as I can be, and while it may be hubris to say so, I can't imagine a better gift for her upon her eventual release from hospital. Of course, if you object to my entry into your home, please, tell me, and I will have Alice come into the shop after she is well.

At least for now, I will not be knocked off my feet by loss that may never happen. I've gotten too used to grieving.

Best,
JMC

Dear Mr. Tesla,

My apologies for addressing you out of the blue. My name is Jefferson Chapelier; I work for Lulu at Fayth. I had a question for you that may appear slightly odd.

I wonder if Lulu has ever told you if she likes flowers, and if so, which ones. While Lulu and I have a very good working relationship, that is not a question which has ever come up between us. However, that issue is certainly one which may have come up between Lulu and yourself. I would be grateful for the information - she appears disinclined to talk on the phone and I refuse to let her wait for the worst without knowledge that I think of her.

My thanks in advance and well wishes for your own health. - JMC

JMC,

How did you get this email address? How very creative of you to seek me out this way for information about Lu.

I think sending flowers is a very kind gesture. I've always had luck with dark orchids.

Mr. Tesla,

I do apologize for the sudden approach. Our work computers are connected and her contact list interweaves with mine. I certainly won't bother you again if need be.

Call it an epiphany that I refuse to grieve loss before it happens, but Lulu appears resigned to the inevitable, which may not indeed be inevitable. Thank you for the information.

Yours sincerely,
JMC

It's not a problem. With this illness I have little to do but continue to check for my messages. Honestly, it's refreshing to have something to reply to that isn't a student coming up with excuses or asking ridiculous questions.

I'll try to keep her distracted.
