In the water closet, Elspeth wrapped her fingers around the cool lip of the basin. Water was a blessing for thirst, but hunger had taken over, making them all tired, irritable, and light-headed. She filled her churning stomach with water, splashed some on her face and throat, and stepped into the corridor. Overhead, a pair of feet could be heard walking along the hallway, followed by the sudden slam of a door. Elspeth jumped. Was the noise necessary? She heard a voice call out a question but no response.
Curious, she went to the foot of the stairs and put her hand on the banister. "Mr. Cullen?" She took to the stairs and watched as the head and shoulders of the boy came into view. He looked to be studying himself in the mirror. They had not spoken much beyond polite words over their stay in the house, so she was hesitant to push. "Is everything alright?"
