John paused on the steps. "Unfortunately, yes," he said, nodding. It was ironic, he thought, to be caught inside a stranger's house instead of desperately searching for a way into it. "After I lost sight of the girl who is not Nettie, I tried the front and back doors and four of the windows. They're all locked. Then I used a fireplace poker to break one of them and it bounced right off." He mimed the maneuver as best he could. "Any moment now, I'll realize the gravity of the situation and have a fit, probably. At the moment, though, it's rather interesting."
