It was late even by Hawaii time when Gabe finally got home. He was still in his hospital scrubs, which were spattered with blood around his midsection. He'd taken off his gloves and mask, but after his last operation, he'd just wanted to go home. It had been the end of his shift and he'd just needed to fucking go home. The house was quiet when he got back, but that didn't mean Lilo was out. "Baby?" Gabe called, his voice tired but somehow unstable. Even he could tell there was a quivering in his tone, not even from sorrow, just exhaustion. "Lilo, you here?" He headed upstairs, trudging stair by stair. |

"Lilo?" He called, wondering if she was around, but no sound answered him. So he shrugged and went to flop on the couch, looking first for the TV remote. |

His friend J wasn't here, or at least he hadn't seen him, but didn't mean he couldn't celebrate the dude's birthday.

He'd gone on a ten-mile run the day before the challenge, and now he was sitting in the 24 Restaurant in Honolulu, ready to eat the four fucking huge kosher pancakes on the table in front of him. He loved to watch these food challenges - what would humans come up with next? - but he'd never really thought about trying one himself.
It was simple. Eat the four manhole-cover-sized pancakes doused with vanilla butter in under an hour. He picked up a fork, trying to find the best angle to attack it, and as he took the first bite he just then became aware of a few people watching him. And was that someone else trying the same thing? |

He'd come to the (apparently American state) of Hawaii to see if he could track down a journal written by a famous Chinese alchemist. He'd located the volume, but upon looking at it, he'd realized to his dismay that his Cantonese really was archaic. Walking down the street, he'd seen the storefront of a truly enormous bookshop, and walked in. Perhaps he could find an English to Cantonese dictionary inside, given the place's sheer size. |

Being as it was Sunday, Brenda had made scones and Stitch, being stitch, had swiped some almost before they made it to the cooling rack, dropping them onto a plate and carrying it on his head all the way up the stairs to Lilo's room, peering around the door, "Lilooooo" |

Just at the moment she was leaning against the bar, chatting with one of the regulars, the rattle on her tail flicking now and again in time with the beat of the background music. She smiled up at each new comer at the top of the stairs, "What can I get you?" |

Now she was seated in a chip shop, eating a quick lunch (okay, so the waiter had looked at her oddly for asking for bangers and mash and cheesecake all at once, but she wasn't visibly pregnant yet). |

At that particular moment he was whistling his near pitch-perfect whistle, Sondheim more than likely, probably from Into the Woods or A Funny Thing..., he was also moving things from a bushel basket into smaller handbaskets, each with a sign clipped to it with the prices, beanbags and other various small toys.
The 'open' sign was lit, and the door was unlocked, even despite the somewhat dim interior. |
