who. Rachel Grey and Rose Frost
what. Fighting
when. Tonight
where. England

Rachel made Rose so very angry and so terribly upset.

Rachel stirred up old memories that Rose had done her best to forget. More than that, she appealed to Rose's better nature as though Rose could be saved. As though there was something left to salvage. Rose was a mess. She'd chosen to be this way sometime a long time ago. There was no going back now.

Rose growled low, it was an animal sound that came out of her throat. She wanted to hurt someone. She wanted to destroy something. There were plenty of people milling about on the streets that she could have chosen from. After a few minutes of silent stalking in the shadows, Rose picked her man. He was handsome and from the look and act of him, he'd whimper like a kitten. This was the sort of prey Rose enjoyed.

But her plans fell apart when the wind blew a familiar scent into Rose's nose. She snarled. Rachel was close.

Go away, Rachel's mind whispered to the man. Run away.

Rachel had flown as fast as she could, trying to track Rose's mind that was so much more different now. Colder. Harder. Crueler.

The wind had blown the salty tears behind her and Rachel wasn't sure if she had any more left to shed. But seeing Rose like that. Not the young teen, begging her boobs to grow, taking hours over her appearance, arguing with Rachel on the best way to sneak out and the best parties. Seeing her like that made her want to cry again. But she couldn't in front of this Future Rose. It was a weakness that she couldn't allow exposure.

Rachel sometimes wished she could control her own mind.

Rose's mind was fragmented. She had periods of clarity and periods of pure madness. Most of the time, she had enough sanity to get through the day like a normal person. But with the pressure of Rachel being around, Rose felt herself cracking around the edges.

"I told you to leave me alone!" She shouted, teeth bared. Sounding much like a little girl, she continued, "You should have stayed away. You ruined my fun. Now I have to hurt you."

Rose didn't want to hurt Rachel. They'd had a good relationship while Rachel had been alive. A small part of Rose still actually cared about what Rachel thought of her. But it wasn't big enough. Rachel had gotten in her way. Now Rachel would have to pay.

Rose, you need help! I can help you. Let me...

Rachel saw flashes of blood. Lots of blood. Familiar faces died before her eyes and she wasn't Rachel anymore. Her hands tore them apart. She felt angry. Upset. Sad. Apathy. Wild.

Then she pushed out, roughly. Rachel's head spun and her eyes stung. She clutched her chest trying to gain her breath and regain the feeling of being her again.

Rachel had once watched all the remaining Greys' die. She heard their last thoughts, final screams but...She tried to force the two memories out, one that wasn't hers and one she wished wasn't. She couldn't think straight, her mind cut from Rose's so abruptly, or that's what she told herself. She couldn't think.

Over time, Rose had developed something of a psychic defense. She had barriers that weak level telepaths couldn't penetrate. And even the strong ones had a hard time staying locked on her for long. She felt Rachel in her brain and shuddered. It was a bad feeling, having someone intrude like that.

When Rachel was forced out, or came out on her own - Rose couldn't tell which, she growled. The sound of diamond claws cutting flesh cut the air. Rose lunged at Rachel.

Rachel regained her thoughts long enough to realize Rose was coming at her. She threw up a shield but it was weak, barely giving Rachel time to dodge.

She realized something then. She couldn't fight Rose. She couldn't do it. Her tears threatened more and clouded her eyes and her judgment. Rachel couldn't hurt her, this angry version or not, Rachel still saw her step-sister in her.

Her father had always told her to fight with her head not her heart. She had never listened.

It was a very soft chant coming from Rose's lips. "I warned you." The phrase repeated over and over. Rose had missed Rachel once, but she'd hit her mark eventually.

"I warned you." As though that absolved Rose of what she wanted to do here.

A closed, clawed fist came flying toward Rachel's side. Rose wasn't thinking. She wasn't trying to drag this out. She wanted to take Rachel out. Things would be clearer if Rachel went away.

Rachel moved again, but not enough. She tried to gain another hold on Rose's mind as the claws cut her side. It was impossible to get a hold, it was so erratic, so random. The Phoenix screamed at the same time she did, trying to get her host to do something, defend herself. But Rachel's borrowed memories were no replaced with images of real blood. Hers.

Her hands clutched her side. Her brain told her it was a minor scrape. Not fatal. Lucky.

Her heart had eyes fixed on Rose. And she knew she hadn't meant to miss.

Rose hadn't really been aiming. She was near berserker at this point, losing her mind and allowing instinct to take over. Logical thought hurt. This was much easier.

The scent of blood in the air made it easier for Rose to lose herself in the moment. She wasn't seeing Rachel. She wasn't seeing anything but red.

She slashed and cut at air before refocusing enough to turn on Rachel again.

Rachel saw blood seep through her fingers and she wasn't doing anything. Phoenix screamed again. Screaming, screaming. All Rachel heard was screaming and she couldn't figure out who's it was.

"Rose, you used to love me," she whispered. "You never said it but I knew. You'd get upset when I was mean or left you out of things. You were upset when we liked the same boys, but you never fought me for them." James. "I should have been nicer, there for you more. I was always jealous because you were prettier than me. Because you had a real family. Because people liked you and even when they didn't, you didn't care. Logan would yell at you for shopping too much and you would say he didn't understand. When Emma would ground, you'd rebel and sometimes I'd help you. Sometimes I think you were watching out for me more than I knew. I was passionate, rash. I didn't think much. Don't think much. Which I guess is ironic. But you always made sure we didn't cross a certain line. You were sure that I never got in so much trouble that I'd be kicked out. You wanted me around..."

Rose was still in there somewhere. She knew it. She had to be.

Something clicked in Rose's brain. For a moment she slowed and focused. Try as she might, she couldn't get any pleasure out of this. She couldn't laugh at the pain. But she couldn't tear herself away, either.

"Rose," she said, "died. A long time ago." Her eyes were empty. Her voice was hollow. Her fingernails were digging into her palms deep enough to draw blood.

"I probably did too," Rachel whispered. "But people get reborn."

Her feet were hovering and she could feel herself moving closer. Rose was as dangerous as ever but every soul in Rachel's body wanted to trust her, sacrifice for her. Save her.

"I can feel her. You can change. I know better than anybody that no future is set in stone. There are alternatives, different choices, different possiblities."

Rachel was making her so unbelievably angry. All this talk of redemption, of second chances... it was for other people. Rose wasn't having any of that. She was hopeless and she had been for many years.

"I've made my choice," Rose said as she swiped at Rachel's face. She just wanted this to end. She wanted Rachel dead so that she didn't have to feel this way.

"I still love you," Rachel whispered. This battle was one she could not fight and Phoenix had stopped protesting, realizing this.

Her head snapped to the side as three long strokes dug into her cheek. The blood was dripping down her face mixing with her tears that ran freely now. The taste of blood entered her mouth, that bitter metallic taste.

This has gone far enough.

The Phoenix Force was not about to leave her host simply because Rachel didn't 'feel' like fighting. Rachel didn't want to hurt this girl, but Phoenix didn't mind. This girl was clearly not whoever Rachel thought she was and that was fine with her.

Flames encased Rachel and came out to lick Rose, warning her to back off. While harmless to Rachel, they grabbed hungrily at Rose's skin. Even Rachel's eyes burned as she watched for she wasn't the one fighting this battle anymore.

Rachel's words fell upon deaf ears but the voice of the Phoenix had a way of reaching to Rose. Lips curling into a smile, Rose felt better that Phoenix was taking over. It meant there'd be a real fight. It also meant Rachel would finally shut up. Rose would have some peace, at last.

When the flames shot out towards her, instinct had Rose bringing a hand to her face to protect her eyes. It didn't do a damn thing as the fire burned her skin. She felt it happen, her skin starting to crisp, the tissue underneath melting at such temperatures. But it wasn't enough to stop her. Rose had died plenty of times. She'd been burned alive more times than she could count on one hand.

She moved forward, still. In spite of the damage being dealt, her throat was in working order. She'd grunted at first but as she came closer to Rachel, she laughed. Claws extended, she came in toward Rachel, intended to deal a killing blow.

The Phoenix had no mercy as it brought Rachel's arm back, creating a mental whip, but Rachel pleaded. She pleaded and pleaded and while her control had all but faded, Phoenix knew things. It knew in the long-run that it was better this way.

Rachel, relieved, escaped to her astral plane with her thoughts while Phoenix stayed behind. It was clear that Rachel didn't want to be here anymore. And there would be no more hurting tonight.

Instead, Phoenix wrapped a shield around itself. A bubble protecting Rachel's body from the animal-like girl. It was impenetrable, and her host was safe for now. That stupid, passionate girl. What a pain in the ass. And it was sure rose was thinking much the same thing.

Rose felt a blow land across her middle. It sent her flying backward. She let out a frustrated growl as she landed on burnt skin. Her forearms were raw, in the process of healing, and it hurt a great deal to have them brushing against concrete. But in spite of the pain, she rose to her feet. In this state, little could really take Rose out save knocking her unconscious. And even that wouldn't have lasted for long.

Rose launched herself at Rachel just as the shield began to form. She pushed herself to get to Rachel before it had completely solidified. Rose brought a claw down once she was close enough but found her claws stopped before they bit into skin. Rose let out angry shouts. She swiped at the invisible barrier again and again, but couldn't reach her target. She swore loudly and continuously, calling Rachel all manner of bad names.

Rose didn't give up for a few minutes. Her fury rose as she found herself unable to kill this woman who'd dared to try talking her out of the life she led. But eventually, Rose found herself running out of steam. The blows slowed. She couldn't get to Rachel and she was beginning to realize this.

Rose took a step back, panting. Her skin was healing. Her hair was growing back. Within a few hours, she'd be completely fine. Physically, at least.

"I warned you." Rose snarled at Rachel, even though she was unsure whether or not Rachel could hear her. "Leave me alone, Rachel." She turned and began to walk away.
