Who: Dick and Carrie
What: Discovery of some difficult truths
Warnings: Maybe language.

Nightwing had been done hurting people for the night. A small portion of the black market had been shut down (admittedly very small, but gun sales were down and that was the important thing) and at least three muggers had learned the error of their ways, in addition to learning about how hard it is to be thrown at a wall.

All in all, it had been a very rewarding evening.

And then Nightwing came back, checked the mail, and instantly decided that it was time to go back out on the prowl. After all, there were probably still some criminal types... criminaling. There always were. In a city of however many million, he had to assume that someone, somewhere was breaking a law. Unless he was very, very unlucky.

She really loved him. And maybe he didn't get the scope of it because she wasn't like him. Because she was stupid and didn't always express herself right. Because marriage, even to the person she loved more than anything, was a vaguely horrifying idea. But she did love him. She'd have been out the door long ago if that hadn't been the case. She needed to tell him. She knew she needed to stop being a coward and needed to start growing up. It just wasn't an easy thing to do.

"I do. I love you, too," she said quietly. "I really... love you." There were words that caught in her throat. She swallowed and took a breath, her eyes wide and on his face. "I'll be back." It sounded so bad. It felt cowardly, especially after his being comforting and saying the right things. But she just wanted to go away and think. "I need to figure out what I'm thinking. I can't here." She looked down. "I'm sorry."

"If your going away now and coming back later means that you don't leave later and never come back, I can live with it." Dick tried to imagine what it would be like from her perspective, not only to find out what it would be like to be married, but to find out that you were the one to instigate something you thought to be among the most terrifying things on Earth.

And then feel pressed to leave the person you married, however briefly.

Nightwing put his gloves back on and replaced his mask. "I believe you'll be back. And I'm going to go sort out my problems my own way." He walked to the window and gave a genuine, if brief, smile. "See you later, Little Wing."

She nodded and watched him go from Dick Grayson to Nightwing in a matter of seconds. Under different circumstances, she would have hit on him or joked or said something. Words weren't easy now. And she didn't feel funny.

"Bye, Dick," she said. It felt a little... heavy and final. She hadn't meant it that way. "Have a goodnight," she added awkwardly. To her credit, she didn't turn or start running. She didn't want him to see her run out, think she was running from him. Even though she was, if even just a little bit.

Nightwing jumped out the window and onto his waiting bike, in a move that would have be showoffy if he hadn't actually been in a hurry. Eventually he was going to have to tell someone, if Carrie didn't first. There wasn't much chance of that, though. Alfred would be hurt they hadn't told him, at least until he explained the situation.

Jason would be amused. Hard to tell how Cass would react, probably just confused by all the fuss. Tim would want honeymoon video, the pervert, and his younger self would probably just hope it didn't get back to Kory. As for Bruce--

"Bruce!" Nightwing stopped the motorcycle in the middle of the street, which was quite a feat since he was going at seventy miles per hour. Bruce knew. He'd been acting weird since they got back from vacation. How would he know? Did they call him? Did someone write him? Why didn't the bastard say anything?

"Call Bruce," he commanded his headset. It automatically dialed Wayne Manor, instead of Bruce's personal number that he reserved for business dealings, or the one he reserved for Batman. There are so many versions of Bruce Wayne, he wanted to make sure to yell at the right one.

"--I got it, Al! Hello, Wayne Manor, Dick speaking."

It was always weird speaking to his younger, different-universe self. "Let me talk to Bruce," Nightwing demanded. Weirdness could wait.

"He's not here right now, Nightwing," said his other self.

"Where is he?"

"Don't know. He's not answering either phone, so probably off being Matches Malone or something. You know how he does."

Yes, Nightwing knew all too well.
