Who: Bree Dennison and Winston Smith
Where: At home, in the middle of the night
What: Bree had a nightmare

The house was silent. Both Winston and Aubrey were asleep, with several hours ahead of them before morning. The evening had grown a little chilly, and Bree had pulled her blankets up all the way over her. Those blankets had since fallen to the side as the girl tossed and turned in her bad dreams. A strong, cold wind was blowing the curtains violently inward.

Suddenly awake, Bree sat straight up in bed, shrieking loudly.

The shriek woke Winston from his uneasy sleep almost immediately. "What?" Glancing around, he frowned and scrubbed a hand over his face before sliding out of bed, seeming to realize where it came from. "Bree?" He inquired, padding out of his room after he'd put on bed pants and a t-shirt. Knocking on her door, he slipped inside and looked at the girl on the bed. "Bree?" Winston asked softly again.

Bree was still screaming when Winston walked in the room. The second time he called her name, she seemed to hear him and she stopped, waking up a little. She was shaky and there were tears running down her cheeks. She felt like she had a hundred degree fever.

The cold wind wasn't blowing through the window anymore; a careful observer would actually notice that the windows were shut and locked.

"I.. I had a nightmare," she said, her voice quivering.

"I'm sorry." And Winston was. He knew how bad nightmares could be. Heading over to Bree's bed, the man sat down and reached out to touch her arm gently.

Bree paused for half a moment before lunging toward him and wrapping herself around his arm, clinging tightly. "Can you turn the light on?" she mumbled into his shoulder. Oddly enough, she didn't feel embarrassed for this 'big baby' behavior. Maybe she was too old for it, but she was too mature for her age in so many other areas, she deserved a few childish outbursts.

"Yes, of course." Though he found it hard to get up with the child clinging to him. Instead, he reached back and flicked on the light on the bedside table before moving to pull Bree into a comforting, tight hug.

Bree took a deep breath, leaning against Winston. It was just a dream. It was just a dream. She shook her head sharply, as if trying to shake the thoughts out. She let her forehead drop back to rest on his arm, unsure what to do now. She felt too awake.

"Hey, you are okay, Bree. I'm here." He whispered and gently kissed the top of her head, settling back against the headboard after a moment so he could get comfortable and still hold on to the young girl. "Can I get you anything?"

She sniffled a little, wiping at her eyes. She nodded some, relaxing a little as she leaned against Winston. "Will you read to me?" she asked, looking up at him. She might be able to get back to sleep if he read to her.

"Sure. What would you like me to read? Do you have a favorite book?" Winston's reading had always put Julia to sleep so he supposed it would probably do the same for Bree.

"We were reading that one," she said, pointing at a thick copy of Restoration of the Monarch on the bedside table. Her voice was still a little shaky. "But we can start over, so you know what's going on." She sat up some to look around the room to locate the other book. "There." She pointed at the Guild of the Circlet. "That's the first one." They were different than she remembered them, but they were still good.

"Alright." Standing, he made sure Bree was alright before he moved over to retrieve the book. With it in hand he moved to sit back down on the bed and settle against the pillows, moving to pull Bree gently back against him. Opening the book, he flipped along to the first page.

Bree leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder as she looked down at the book with him. "You're going to do the voices, right?" she asked just as he started.

"Oh, of course. At least, I'll try." Winston offered with a little soft laugh. "You just settle in and try to sleep, yes?"

Bree nodded and shifted a little to find the balance between her pillow and Winston. She read along as he read outloud, occasionally giving him tips ("The hobbits should have kind of higher voices. A little squeaky." "Not that squeaky").

She had been quiet for several minutes, pleased that he had gotten into the swing of things, then suddenly her attention shifted. Her head jerked to the side and she was glaring at something over by the closet. "Stop it," she whispered, clearly upset. "Go away."

"Bree? Are you okay?" Marking the book he shut it and glanced over where she was looking. "Is there something over there?" Oh good Lord he hoped it wasn't a rat.

She didn't seem to respond to Winston. It was almost like she was in a different place.. In a trance, sort of.

"He isn't like that now," she insisted, frowning. "He wouldn't do that. He isn't the same person." She wasn't afraid of the ghost, but she wasn't very happy with what he was saying, either. "It's not the same."

"Go away, you stupid Hufflepuff!" she said, raising her voice. It was not the most elegant sounding curse, especially not to muggle ears. She flipped over onto her stomach, grabbing her pillow and using it to cover her head. The Seeker would go when he realized she wouldn't listen anymore, she hoped. He didn't have any ulterior motive, besides making her listen.

"What's happening?" Winston was terribly confused and worried. There didn't seem to be anyone else in the room yet Bree was upset. "Bree?" He touched her back.

It seemed to have passed. Bree pulled the pillow off her head, and looked around. She seemed calmer now, and even her eyes looked more clear. She wasn't sure how to explain it to him. She flushed brightly. She was hoping that Winston would think she was normal. She'd pretty much blown that. "I'm okay," she said weakly.

"Okay...alright." Touching her head gently he settled back. "We gonna get back to reading or would you prefer just sleeping?"

Bree was tired. Seeing ghosts sometimes did that to her. She still was sort of upset and fidgety, though. She was exhausted, but she didn't know if she could relax once he turned the lights off and left. "Can I sleep in your room tonight?" she asked.

"Yeah, okay." He answered, smiling gently at her. "Come on, then." Rolling off the bed he held out his hand for her. "You know, Bree...have you ever wanted a dog?" Maybe if he got her a dog, the canine could make her feel more safe at night.

She took his hand, climbing down and following him to her father's room. "Uhm.. That would be kinda weird." She was thinking mostly of Uncle Sirius, and she didn't know if she could have a pet dog without being a little weirded out. Plus she was still working on her transfig and hoping to become a cat-animagus.. and having her pet dog chase her around would be weird. But then, having Uncle Sirius chase her around would be weird too. Not that she even knew if she would be a cat or not. She shrugged.

"Oh, well, then never mind. I just thought maybe...having a dog around would help with feeling more protected." Shrugging, his cheeks reddened when she turned down his offer since he felt embarrassed and silly for even offering. What had he been thinking? Leading her into the room that had become his, he turned on the bedside lamp and pulled back the blankets more. "Go on, get comfortable."

She tilted her head back to look up at him. "I feel safe." She smiled some to him. A dog wouldn't be able to keep the ghosts away. She felt better to have another person around. She climbed into bed, slipping underneath the covers.

"If you are sure." Nodding, he got into the bed once she seemed settled, getting back into the spot he'd left. Laying on his stomach, he yawned and then glanced at Bree. "We can leave the light on, too, if you want."

"Okay," she mumbled sleepily, already curled up and drifting off. She yawned, her eyes closed. She wouldn't have any problems sleeping, now.

"Goodnight, daddy."

That made him beam brightly. "Good night, Bree." Leaning in he kissed her forehead. "Sleep well."
