Who: Darcy, Dagny, and Loki.
Where: Darcy's place.
When: After this exchange.
What: Darcy invites Dagny over to watch reality TV. Dagny takes her up on it, because hey, chance to see the adorable bb!parents without telling them who she is.
Rating: No idea, but worksafe.

Dagny hadn't been fishing for an invitation. Really. She was perfectly, 100% innocent... this time. But when the invitation came, how could she resist? Her mother was fun. In fact, Dagny wagered that were there no blood relationship, she still would have wanted to invite the elder Lewis out to do stuff.

Sadly, there were no tiaras to be had at the supermarket, but there were bags of kettle corn. It may not have been the wisest thing, snacking during Honey Boo Boo (...bobbing for pig's feet, seriously?), but Dagny didn't want to show up empty-handed. So. Kettle corn.

These were essentially re-runs for Dagny, but she didn't care. It wasn't trolling her mother if she kept the future-secrets to herself, right? It was... uh. Visiting? Visiting. Again, 100% innocent.

She did not expect Loki to show up. From what she'd seen on the 'net, he came and went anyway.

Thankfully Darcy Lewis was completely and totally oblivious to the fact that her daughter was coming over for a visit. She just thought it was a travesty that this poor girl wasn't going to get to watch Honey Boo Boo. Who said they weren't allowed to watch reality tv in their house? Crazy people, that's who. If someone would have tried to tell her that, there would have been people getting tazed.

In any case, she was mostly just hanging out at home. No, Loki wasn't there at the moment, but she was kind of glad. If only because it was easier not to be annoyed sometimes when he wasn't around. Clearly. When there was a knock, she went to get the door.

"Hey. Dagny, right?"

"That's me!" The visitor was petite, grinning, and trying to play it cool. Excited? Naaaaah. Just gearing up for Honey Boo Boo, that's all. "Thanks for inviting me. I can go for a while, but it's like a drug - eventually you need your TV fix."

Truth told, Dagny hadn't asked Leandra or her parents if they'd mind. The future-kids had been too busy with mischief, but the opportunity to see 'vintage' episodes as they aired was just too good.

"I brought popcorn? Hope you're not in the 'kettle corn is weird' camp."

It was totally okay to be excited about Honey Boo Boo. She always was. "Oh no problem. It's my pleasure to give you your fix." She gestured for her to come inside. "Just make yourself at home." There wasn't any reason to act all formally or anything.

Ah yes, ignorance was bliss. "Oh cool. Popcorn's always good. I'll go stick it in the microwave.. unless it's the pre-popped stuff." The tv was already on, but she had lots and lots of episodes up on the dvr.

"I love kettle corn."

"It's the kind you have to pop." Dagny offered the box to Darcy, fighting the urge to bound across the room at top speed. (Wasn't dignified. No really, Dags, cool it.) So instead she wandered over and found herself a place to sit. "I'm in the 'prepopped is weird' camp. Unless it's flavored, and then it's fine."

There were, apparently, a lot of popcorn rules in Dagny-land.

Once seated, the kid snuck a look around. What? It was totally fine to snoop in your mother's apartment, right? It was like... anthropological insight. Or something. (Okay, Dags was nosy, and that was that.)

Taking the box, she grinned and went into the kitchen to put it in the microwave. "Yeah I'm not a fan of it either. Unless it's that smart food cheddar stuff? That shit is good. That's about it though." She liked it when it was warm and nice. Flavored was also always good. Sometime she'd have to get some caramel popcorn.

Possibly because Darcy had taught her all of those rules. She had a lot of them too.

"Go ahead and start the episode or watch whatever while this pops," she called.

Dagny was going to save the Honey Boo Boo for Darcy; beginning early was just travesty. That meant flipping channels until the popcorn was done. Dog the Bounty Hunter? Nope. Crime show? Boring. Daily Show? Funny if you didn't already know how the election would play out. And then Dagny saw it, just waiting to be selected: How I Met Your Mother.

Her trollish little heart filled with glee. She chose the channel. Even if she was the only one who'd ever find it funny, Dagny appreciated the irony of watching that show on Darcy's couch.

Perfect.

"Cheddar popcorn is great. Not sure how I feel about jalapeno flavor, though."

And at that, Loki materialized in the living room, face to face with the girl he was almost certain was his child.

Oh. This was about to get interesting.

"I did not know we would have guests tonight." His green eyes never left Dagny's.

The microwave beeped and Darcy grabbed the pop bag, giving it a shake to get all of the flavor all over the popcorny goodness.

She was bringing it back out to the living room in a bowl when there was Loki.

"Uh sorry." She bit back the urge to say this was her house and he didn't get a say. "Loki, this is Dagny. Dagny, this is Loki." She wasn't going to say he was her boyfriend. Nope. Not happening. She sat down on the couch next to Dagny and passed over the popcorn.

"How I Met Your Mother, huh? I haven't seen enough of this show."

Oh man, awkward.

Well, as far as Dagny was concerned, she had two options. One: squirm. It was certainly the most appealing option (ohgod the STARE, this was bad), but it wasn't going to help Dagny escape with dignity and guaranteed future-existance intact. Option two: fake it 'till you make it.

In person, Dagny was a good liar. Okay, so maybe the substance of her lies wasn't any better than when it was written, but she kept her head and her cool, as that was a huge part of selling a story. Loki stared? She stared back, unblinking, and smiled. If there were sound-effects to every-day life, there would've been a halo ping.

And then she was back to playing normal. A normal guest would've said hello, right? (Okay, so a normal guest would've freaked out at the spontaneous materialization, but Dags was so used to it that it didn't even occur to her to feign fear.) "Uhhh. Hey, Loki. I'm Dagny. I say it the American way because Dags is a way better nickname than Dogs."

Making a 'How I Met Your Mother' joke was massively ill-advised. It just was, but Dagny could not help herself. She was a talker. Anything else would've been out-of-character, so she went for it. "Are you a fan of How I Met Your Mother? I mean. Neil Patrick Harris. Dr. Horrible sold me on that guy."

And then she waited to see what would happen. Rule one of a good improv? Commit to your story. Rule two: roll with what your scene partners throw at you.

Any doubts Loki had were absolutely dismissed in watching the girl interact one on one with both of them. Her mannerisms were such a mixture of himself and Darcy it would have made his head spin if it wasn't so ridiculously funny.

And this is absolutely the sort of thing he would do if presented the opportunity, his own spotty parentage aside.

As it was, he merely sat on the sofa on the other side of Darcy, taking a bit of popcorn and smirking.

"Yes. I do enjoy How I Met Your Mother."

Fun and games were all well and good, but the girl had until the end of the night to tell Darcy or he would be forced to. It wasn't in his plans to have Darcy furious with him for not divulging the secret. He'd give her cause later in some respect anyway.

Oh yeah, Darcy was totally oblivious about the way they were looking at each other and the weird tension that was now in the room. She was going through the dvr so that she could put up Honey Boo Boo.

"It's pretty good, from what I've seen." She hadn't watched a lot of it, mostly because she needed to catch up.

"Ready?" she asked, hitting the play button and then grabbing a handful of popcorn. Even if Dagny kind of reminded her of herself, it wouldn't have ever ever occurred to her that they were related. Not even with all the other future kids around. "I do love Neil Patrick Harris though. It's too bad he's gay."

Oh no, he knew. And worse, he'd know that she'd catch the inflection, which put the next move squarely in her corner. Dagny froze, waiting for Darcy to catch on, but when the conversation moved on to Neil Patrick Harris she let out a breath and went for the popcorn. Casual-like.

"I know, right?" Dagny agreed. "Guys who can sing and dance? The best."

Halo. The kid didn't so much as glance left to catch a reaction, as gratifying as it would've been. She had to content herself with trying to glimpse reactions from the corner of her eye. "So you really did pageants?" Dagny asked Darcy, continuing on as if there were absolutely no subtext to the conversation at all. "Do kid's pageants have a talent competition? Because clearly that's the best part."

That's right, Loki. In this game of 'tell Darcy the truth' Chicken, Dagny was not swerving until the stakes got much higher.

Part of Loki was proud.

The other part was annoyed. Was this what it would be like to be a parent? Vexing.

He sat back on the sofa, eying his daughter with extreme prejudice. "Did you do pageants in your childhood as well then, Dagny?" He intentionally pronounced it the Asgardian way.

As it should be.

"Uhhh, pretty much." Dagny admitted. "A lot of the adults in the future, they either don't have the patience or don't get it. Like, I don't think Andrew's dad even understands what trolling is, so he takes it way too seriously or it goes right over his head, and that's no fun. But the two 'Uncles,' they know what you're up to and they give it right back, so it's more of a game."

Pause.

"The whole point is to see what their next move is, you know? I like a good challenge and I don't mind losing as long as the other person does something awesome. So you know. I send Tony singing robots and wait to see if he calls me on it."

At that, Loki had to laugh out loud. Granted, it was one of his ridiculous little giggles, but he frankly hadn't laughed enough lately with any sort of genuine humor.

"Gods, you are our child."

Leading Tony Stark and Clint Barton on a merry chase. Irony didn't really get more obvious.

For Darcy, that made total sense. "Yeah I can't really see anyone but Tony and Clint having any sort of sense of humor. I mean Natasha would kill you. Bruce would just go... whut.. and Fury would just be all I told you motherfuckers to shut the motherfuck up." Yes, that was her best Sam Jackson impression. You're welcome.

She grinned a little. "Yeah you're totally ours." That was so weird. How alike she was to both of them.

"Poor Steve though. Andrew huh? Hey, if Steve actually got laid, more power to him."

Aw. 'You're definitely ours' was as good as praise. Dagny beamed, only to be caught up a few moments later by Darcy's list of Avengers.

--Steve? Dagny's mind went a lot of awful places, because to her, 'Steve' was Stevie Coulson and Steve Rogers was 'Captain Rogers' or 'Andrew's dad.' It showed on her face - horror, then horrified amusement, and then giant grin. "...OH. Sorry. There's a Steve Coulson who's around my age, and for a second I thought that you meant--" Well. They probably didn't need to hear what she'd thought, especially since they didn't know younger-Steve personally.

"Yeeeah, you have to pick someone with a sense of humor. Otherwise it's perfectly good effort wasted, and someone's potentially furious. I mean, I'd rather not die. I like being alive and un-punched."

Loki filed that way. Agent Coulson had a son named Steve.

Because of course he did.

"I'd like to see someone lay a hand on my daughter." It was said with an immediacy which surprised him. Loki had never pictured himself as protective in this manner before, yet here it was.

Which brought another thing to mind.

"... is there a young man?" Yes. This was important.

"There's a Steve Coulson?" Darcy cracked up laughing. "Of course there is. That's kind of hilarious. Don't tell them that I said that." Though apparently this other Steve was as bad as his name sake about getting laid. She wanted to know more. Hm..

She nudged Loki a bit with her elbow. "Don't ask her that! The last thing she needs is you threatening some guy.. or girl."

Ahaha. Dagny knew something. It was clear by the look on her face that she knew something - the question was whether or not she'd say it. Either way, she was going to draw this out.

"There's never been anyone serious."

Which didn't mean there'd never been anyone.

"And believe me: were I scorned? You wouldn't need to do anything. If I couldn't handle it myself, I have some really creative friends."

That was not the immediate negation that Loki had been hoping for.

Still, he attempted (note, attempted) to be good-natured about it. "I see."

"Siblings? I spoiled you on me. I can't spoil you on anything else." Well. She could, but where was the fun in that?

Spoiling her parents wasn't nearly as much fun as watching reactions to hint-dropping. Dagny was enjoying hint-dropping way too much. "We do have this conversation in the future. I mean, it wasn't anything serious, but I did tell you I was seeing him, so. The Talk. There were hand-puppets."

No there weren't. "...no there weren't. That last part is a complete fabrication. But it makes a good story, doesn't it? Mortifying ways to get The Talk, Number 457."

[info]youalwayskneel

Unfortunately, Loki was Asgardian, and the term 'The Talk' was utterly meaningless to him.

Fortunately, he was the God of Lies, and it was absolutely not showing.

"At any rate, I suppose it's best to not know. Have to have some surprises." As if it wasn't enough surprise already to have a grown daughter arrive to watch terrible reality TV with them.

Darcy gave them both a look. "You'll find that since it's my body pushing out babies, I should be the one who gets to know." She sighed a bit and grabbed a handful of popcorn. It was quite a wonder that she hadn't gotten up to get a drink yet.

"I am way too cool for hand puppets. I think I would have just shown you porn and told you that way." She shrugged.
