who. Doug and Carrie
what. Talking about work
when. This afternoon
where. Doug's pad of tech goodness

The sun was still up when Carrie got off her shift. This was a good thing, it meant she had some time on her hands before the bars filled and the drunks wandered the streets. It was St. Patrick's Day. Carrie was completely in the belief that she should have spent the day getting piss faced with strangers in a pub. But she wouldn't be doing that. Dick wouldn't have approved. And there was work to be done, thugs whose asses needed kicking.

Once again, crime fighting got in the way of Carrie's social life, managing yet again to keep her a lot more sober than she cared to be. But it was just as well. Carrie still couldn't remember the last night she'd been drunk. Everything beyond the fact that she'd been with Dick and it'd been good was a blank.

Carrie took a turn and sped down a street. Her bike came to a sudden stop in front of Doug's place. She gave it a good looking-over before parking her ride. The Robin-cycle could take care of itself. Carrie never worried about it. Even if some idiot was stupid enough to try and steal it, Carrie could always call it back with the press of a button. With a loving pat, she walked to the door and knocked. Hands in the pockets of her jeans, she waited for Doug, not really sure what to expect. Maybe he had no idea what he was doing. Maybe this would be a mistake. Maybe not. Carrie tried being cautiously optimistic.

The door rolled aside and Doug grinned from his computer across the room.

"Hey! Come on in!"

He bounced in his chair as he finished a line of input then hopped up. Every wall was filled with computer hardware and diagnostics, linked together and humming along in their various ways. Several separate terminals had beens et up including the on where Doug had sat which was surrounded by a positive maze of computer equipment.

He made his way toward the door and smiled.

"Welcome to the madness. I'm Doug."

"Hi," Carrie didn't let the surprise she was feeling be heard in her voice. At least Carrie could be fairly certain that he knew what he was doing. She took a step in and looked around. There were screens and wires all over the place. This was madness of the best sort, in Carrie's opinion.

"Nice to meet you." And, because she couldn't help herself, she added, "I wasn't really expecting this."

He grinned.

"The madness or me? I have a smaller section next door that I am hoping to make more ah, official looking for customers to see, but I wanted to start this stuff up and running and well, I kind of lost track of time."

He smiled again.

"Get you something to drink?"

He pointed to the refrigerator that occupied a place of honor near his desk.

"All the electronics. It's a pleasant surprise, y'know? It means you probably know what the hell you're talking about when it comes to computers." She couldn't help but grin. He seemed friendly and that was a little contagious. "I... sure." She would have refused a drink, if not for the fact that she was curious as to what he kept in his fridge. If it each shelf held Redbulls, Carrie might not be able to contain the laugh. "Just a water."

He eyed her.

"Of course I do, but I understand. Half the geeks out there are wanna-bes."

He led the way in, gesturing.

"I have had a hell of a time melding up different techs to make what i wanted but it is all synching now."

He opened the fridge and inside was some actual food and some soda, and a lower shelf full of water in in screw top bottles. He grabbed one for her and handed it over.

"Thanks." Carrie took the water and drank a bit. She realized, feeling a bit odd, that this was something like a job interview. Having not had a lot of interviews and especially not having many successful ones, she almost felt a wash of nerves. She quickly squashed that feeling down.

"How long has it taken you to do this?" She made a sweeping motion.

He looked around, really seeing it for the first time.

"Erm.. a couple of days? That's about right, I think."

He glanced at the computer he had been siting at, then grinned at her.

"Listen to this; Hey Horatio! When did your first circuits go online?"

A computer voice came from several wall mounted speakers.

"Operations status was begun approximately 72 hours, 23 minutes, and 35 seconds ago."

"Dude." Carrie grinned a big grin. "That's pretty awesome. I've worked with some voice activated computers back home. Not so much here. The tech's a little slow. I'm from the future. A dystopian future, in fact." She took a step closer to a monitor that was connected to a keyboard. "Do you mind?" She wanted to look at the specs of the computers, but wouldn't do so without permission. "Also, why Horatio?"

"Really? That is cool! Well it probably wasn't cool for you in the future, but...yes. Um! Go ahead! A fitting introduction to my stuff."

He held the chair for her.

"Tech is nothing like it was back home, here, but I hope to see if I can't nudge it along some. Sadly software is where my brain is at."

Doug could babble, yes he could.

Carrie didn't mind the babbling. Her hands flew across the keyboard. "Oh, it was still pretty cool for me. I mean," she sounded only slightly distracted, "I've always been good with computers. But it wasn't until I was working with Batman that I got to play with cool toys." She looked up for a minute. "I hacked the bat-copter on one of my first missions. Batman wasn't exactly pleased, but it was awesome."

"You can probably get stuff updated if you talk to the right people. I've managed on the computers at my place and my bike. Which is downstairs, if you want to take a look."

He grinned, watching her and how she worked and nodded. Not bad at all.

"Heh... sounds like fun! And I might just have to look around. This stuff is top of the line off the shelf, but I am going to want more. Not that it is needed, but... I love cool toys, too."

He eyed her.

"Really? I would love to see the modifications you have."

"I can point you in the direction of some Waynetech. It's not as spiffy as it could be in this world, but you'll get plenty of hardware." Carrie got quiet for a minute as she worked her way through some code. Some of it went over her head, most of it she could understand.

"I'll show you on my way out. Unless you want to see it now. I have my gauntlet on me. I can show you the remote controls. I can control my bike from a distance." Which was extremely useful when it came to crime fighting.

He was distracted as he watched her coding move on the screen and his grin only grew.

"Hmm, on the way out is fine... you really handle code well!"

His eyes were full of excitement.

"How is your grasp of different levels of tech? You said there is Waynetech, which the way you refer to makes it sound as more advanced, and you seem okay around this stuff, but how about more run of the mill stuff?

Like an excited kid, he slipped her helmet on and slipped behind her, and settling in, and gently wrapped his arms around her lower body, doing his best to be less bouncy.

"Wow! This rocks! You rock!"

Carrie only laughed. "Thanks." She pulled the kickstand up with her foot and with a last warning to hold on, they were off. Carrie loved riding on her bike. It was an entirely different experience on the road when you were weaving between cars. Normally, Carrie was a bit of a reckless driver. With a passenger, she tried to be reckless while adhering to the rules of the road. This proved difficult, but she managed.

They were over the bridge and in New York in under twenty minutes and in front of a bar just a few minutes after that.

He held on and grinned as they went, watching the scenery go by and remembering fondly rides with Warlock. The ride went swiftly and he was smiling as they alighted in front of the bar.

"Really cool!"

Carrie smirked. "Thanks." She patted the bike lightly, gently, as one would pat their mighty and noble steed. Then she turned it off and headed for the bar.

The bar was small and it was early, but there were already people gathering around tables and lining up at the bar. Green beers were being sold, or so boasted a handwritten sign on a ratty piece of paper on the bar. "Okay," Carrie said, "This isn't the most classy place. Service isn't terrible." As soon as she finished speaking, the bartender shouted at a rude drunk to shut the fuck up. "Mostly," she added.

Doug bounced and looked around, smiling and curious.

"S;better than a few of the places the New Mutants went to, back in my time."

He chuckled and his voice went quieter.

"Back then, my powers were less defined, but I still could make I.D.s that would pass"

"So you're a mutant?" Carrie asked. She hadn't been sure before just now. Before taking a seat somewhere, she led Doug to the bartender and asked for a beer. She had to drive, so she couldn't drink more than that, really. And she'd be patrolling tonight, so she needed to keep sober.

She pulled a fake ID out of her pocket, because though Doug was legal, she certainly had a few years left to go. It took a minute of staring Carrie down before the bartender relented and gave her her drink.

"Yeah. I see and understand any pattern, anywhere, and can break codes, translate languages within a short time. Not a very combat friendly power, which is how I ended up here."

He nodded and ordered a beer himself, then turned back to her when he had his drink.

"Shall we sit?"

"That's pretty cool. Not the last part, but still. Cool power. I think I'm a little jealous." Carrie paused and looked around. "Yeah, okay." She took her bottle and walked over to a table that wasn't flanked by drunk men. They weren't too far away from the noise of the place, but they probably wouldn't be knocked into by any drunks.

"Thanks. I liked it, even if it was weird to see all my friends with more outwardly shiny powers. I spent a lot of my time in computer labs, or languages labs."

He settled opposite her and sipped his beer.

"Not bad. So what do you do when not helping others and geeking out?"

"Um," she thought for a long moment. It probably said a lot about her life that she couldn't think of something right away. "Not much, actually." She ran a hand through her hair. "I work and I sleep and I try to make time for dates with my boyfriend or my friends. Most of whom are part of the batfamily. I guess most of my life revolves around crime fighting." Carrie wasn't sure whether that was a good or bad thing.

"How about you? What are you doing when not tangled up in wires or sitting in front of a screen."

"How long've you been here?" Carrie sipped her beer and laughed at a group of men who were singing Irish folk songs. Everyone was Irish on St. Pat's. "I've been around for... I think over a year now."
