Steve knew precisely what he was afraid of - it wasn't rejection. Jean was kind enough that, were she to let him down, it would be done gently. No. He was afraid of going there just to lose her. It had happened with Peggy, and then with the world he'd just gotten used to inhabiting. It could happen here too.
