Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:steve rogers, tony stark

Who: Steve and Tony to start, then Steve and Jean
Where: Istanbul (not Constantinople?) and then NYC.
When: Not long after Steve's 'how do I internet?' post.
What: Tony comes to pull Steve out of Turkey. Then Steve makes new friends.
Rating: Y'all. It's Steve. PG at worst.

If he hadn't been dropped in Istanbul under such strange conditions, Steve might have enjoyed himself. He'd always wanted to see more of the world, and under more pleasant conditions than a world-war or some kind of alien invasion. Unfortunately, he was too worked up over what had happened to really look around. Once he'd found where the portkey was supposed to be, he took to pacing. Nervous energy had to be worked off, and walking was better than twitching or tapping.

He was in a blue uniform with a big white star and carrying a shield. He was so, so lucky that he hadn't attracted unwanted attention. Well. Much. People were staring.

Feeling awkward, Steve clutched the shield under an arm and tried to remember to breathe. He checked the telephone every few minutes, just in case someone had tried to call.

Tony flew in, grinning behind the mask. He'd been waiting for these assholes to show up for months. Granted, they totally handled the last issue, but just like back home, the Universe knew they were there now.

Only was a matter of time before shit got particularly real again.

Landing next to Cap, he immediately retracted his visor. "Sup, Capsicle? Man, you guys are late to the party."

Steve knew better than to correct Tony. It was one of those situations where showing any sort of discomfort would encourage him more, so the captain took a breath and stopped pacing around like an impatient kid. "I'm taking a page from your book and making an entrance."

From anyone but Steve, that might have been sarcasm. Heck. From Steve it was sarcasm, but there was genuine gratitude on his face, too. "It's good to see you, Tony. Really."

You couldn't really shake hands while carrying a shield, nor when the other guy was in a suit of armor, so Steve did the next best thing: he saluted Iron Man. "Thank you for coming out to get me."

Tony absolutely could not help the fact his grin got bigger. Seriously, the kid was priceless.

"At ease, Cap. It's no big. We're all stuck here, gotta get each other's backs, right? I called in for a plane home. Not going to carry you like a princess back to the States."

He began walking down the street to the airstrip (thankfully and ever so conveniently not too far away). Seriously, he was Iron Man. Like he cared if people stared at him; his team just saved the world last month.

"You been brought up to speed already? Still waiting on Banner and Goldilocks."

"Goldi--" Oh. Right. Thor. The edge of Steve's mouth twitched. He didn't want to smile and encourage Tony, but he really couldn't help himself. "Yeah, Natasha gave me the details." In public it was 'Agent This' and 'Agent That.' It seemed more respectful - they had, after all, worked for the title.

But in person, well. They'd fought aliens together. They'd all earned the right to call him Steve, and if he wanted to be on a first-name basis, he'd best call them by first names, too.

"You called in a plane? Tony, you didn't have to do that, I can use one of those port-things." He didn't want to, but he could. Would, if he wasn going to be trouble otherwise.

"Steve, seriously. Chill. I've had time to get Stark Industries up and going here, believe me, it's not a problem. If it was, you'd still be grabbing boots."

It was just a small Gulfstream, but at least Tony could take the suit off and there'd be a change of clothes for Steve. Jarvis was through. "I'd worry about you getting used to a new place, but you're old hat at it by now."

"If only that were a marketable skill." Steve's tone was dry, but that was how his humor tended to go - understated and usually self-deprecating. Clothes were awesome. Better than, as the suit had been through hell and was missing its mask entirely.

That was okay. Steve understood the necessity of the mask, but hated it. It was hot and limited his range of movement through the neck.

"There's a police badge in the belt. I don't really understand it; I suppose it could've gotten slipped in while Manhattan was under attack, but I think I would have noticed."

"That's how this place works, Cap," Tony said, walking up the stairs to the plane, already starting to put the suit through it's removal protocols.

"You wind up replacing someone else when you get here. So you replaced a cop, most likely. Probably have his wallet on you too somewhere, and you found the phone." When the suit was finally off, he crashed into one of the chairs, rubbing his eyes.

"It's crazy, but no one's found a way back home. So you kind of have to make the best of it."

"Wait. I displaced someone?" Someone who had a life, friends, possibly a family? Steve understood what Tony was saying: no one had found a way back. And, if Mr. Stark had been there a year, surely he'd tried. But. It made him unhappy, and the set of his jaw said as much.

"Do they ever come back?"

That was what was bothering him. Not 'you can't go home' but 'they probably can't return to their own lives.' Steve was used to loss. He wasn't used to taking from others.

Tony would have bet money that'd come up.

"No way of knowing. My personal theory is that they got our lives back home. People do pop in and out without any control over it though. They might come back then. I know it sucks, Cap. Sorry."

Tony had grown. The gold ring on his left hand wasn't all that had changed.

If Steve was going to continue to fret, he'd do it later and in private. It did suck, but there was a difference between moping and continuing to think about the problem. One was not productive, while the other might turn up solutions.

He'd think about it.

But, for now, there was a costume to settle and questions to ask. Steve folded the suit onto his shield. As he was doing that, the band on Tony's finger caught his eye. Huh. "I didn't know you were married." Truth be told, Steve wasn't even certain if he'd heard that Tony was seeing someone. 'The Earth needs saving' had sort of trumped everything not directly related to the mission.

Tony sat back and grinned a little. "Got married in December. To Pepper."

He sometimes forgot that every single person in the world didn't know every single thing about him. He was Tony Stark. It was easier to assume they did.
