Merrill doesn't believe in shoes ([info]little_elf_lost) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Who: Merrill, Anders, Hawke
What: Justice is back.
Where: The soundproofed bedroom
Warnings: Oh, tons. Nudity, sex, violence, angst. SO MUCH ANGST.

"I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever."

Anders had the holiday off, and Merrill was taking advantage of that. Hawke would surely join them when she was finished with taking care of whatever it was that needed to be done, but she wouldn't hold it against Merrill and Anders for starting early. The two were tangled up in the sheets, Merrill giggling.

Then he caught her just the right way and Merrill moaned. Her nails dug into his back, drawing blood. The feeling accompanying the blood was familiar, and she suddenly felt more powerful. Blood magic?

Anders was happy. He had a day off that he had Merrill. Hawke soon as well. Things had been going well for a while, and he was taking it all while he could.

When Merrill's nails bit into his back he felt something. Magic? What was that? Then something too familiar stirred. Anders pulled away from Merrill, nearly jumped across the room as electricity crackled around him.

Then he couldn't control it anymore. "Blood Magic? You dare?" It wasn't his voice that came out, but the spirit he thought was gone. "He casts me out for you and that other woman and you use us for this?"

Merrill had thought her blood magic was gone. She'd been out of touch from it for so long. It had distressed her at first; she'd felt empty and lost. But the absence of blood magic had made it easier for she and Anders to grow closer, and she considered that a blessing. Things were perfect between them, and she didn't find herself missing the power.

But now it was back. Undeniably back. And something else was, too. Justice?

"I didn't mean to!" Merrill objected, drawing her knees up to her chest as if she were trying to hide her nudity from the spirit. "I wasn't trying to use you, Anders. I love you! I wouldn't!" She couldn't imagine using her friends' blood for anything, not on purpose. "I'm so sorry!"

Anders was fighting Justice with all he had, but he wasn't making a dent. He was suddenly terrified, thinking this must be what mages who lost to demons must feel.

"It is inexcusable!" He pointed at Merrill, Anders was yelling and screaming and suddenly he felt his vocal cords cooperating and he was screaming out, "No! Not Merrill, no!" but it was too late. The air smelled of ozone and lightning had left his hand.

Merrill should have run. She should have ducked, she should have put up a shield, she should have defended herself. But it was nearly impossible to think of her Anders as the enemy. She took the blast full-on, and the sheet didn't provide any protection.

Merrill cried out, forced off the bed and onto the floor by the force of the lightning. She was quivering all over.

"Oh, Maker, Merrill," Anders started towards her, a healing spell already forming when he felt Justice trying to come back. "I'm so sorry."

He ran away. He hated doing it, but he might hurt her more if he stayed. Hawke should be there soon. She could heal Merrill. He didn't even know where he would go just as far away from Hawke and Merrill as possible.

Something drew Hawke back faster than usual. Something felt off, like... almost like the Fade had somehow come manifest in the actual world. Considering the crazy universe, she'd almost thought nothing of it, until Karl's words came back to her like a brick to the head - a piece of the Fade in the world? Justice? How...?

She ran into the room, flames already starting to form in her hands. They almost immediately dissipated when she saw Merrill, concern taking over as she quickly moved to her, weaving what few healing spells she knew. "Merrill... what happened? I felt... something."

She didn't want to assume. Couldn't bring herself to.

Merrill reached for Hawke, clinging to her as the healing magic worked. "Justice," she said, her voice wavering. "He's back. I used blood magic and he's back."

Merill didn't understand any of it. How could she use blood magic again? It had been gone! Was it her fault Justice had lost it? He sure made it sound that way.

Hawke didn't want to believe that. She'd seen what Justice could drive Anders to do... but she'd always been able to reach him, somehow. Had the spirit become even more resentful in his time split from Anders?

"I thought you couldn't do blood magic anymore?" Even the little that Hawke knew how to do hadn't been working since their arrival here, which truly wasn't that great a loss. "And... I thought Justice had been... banished from Anders? Suppose it was too good to be true."

Merrill shook her head, burying her face in Hawke's shoulder. "I thought so, too. I don't know, Hawke. I tried to talk to him, but I couldn't. Justice was too strong."

"Did he leave?" She'd heard Anders breaking through, heard him screaming, apologizing.

Hawke could only shrug, holding Merrill close. "He was gone by the time I got here... he must've realised what Justice was doing. Somehow."

Could they really even call it Justice anymore? It'd been bad back in Kirkwall, but at least it'd still seemed to have some fragile grip on sanity.
