WHO: Commander Shepard & Commander Shepard.
WHERE: The Normandy, currently docked in God Knows Where.
WHEN: After Joker's post in the main comm.
WARNINGS: Mass Effect 3 spoilers!

It wasn't her ship.

Joker must have arrived before the Alliance retrofit; the ship was still primarily Cerberus. While it looked like Joker (or most likely, EDI) had been trying to remove the logos, Miranda's cabin and the armory stood untouched while the shuttle bay was missing the little things Cortez and James had changed. She had no where else to stay at the moment though, so it would have to do.

The hospital had been of no help. The coma patient she had replaced was a Jane Doe found under an interstate overpass who no one had come to claim. No ID, no know address. Ash had suggested staying with her in the meantime, and Shepard likely would take her up on it.

Just not yet.

At the moment, she just sat in her (no, not hers) cabin, looking at the fishtank. Stupid thing had always been relaxing.

Shepard was just starting to get use to this place. Weird people coming from all over, but no war. But a different version of her. Even on her standards this was weird.

She made her way through the Normandy until she made it up to her cabin. It felt strange to knock on her own door, but she buzzed to let the other her know she was there.

Shepard sighed, standing up. She had to leave anyway. It just didn't feel right being here.

"Fine, Joker. I'm heading out, just..."

The door opened and she stared eye to eye with a red haired woman exactly her height, build, and stubborn set to the jaw.

Huh. So they were right about that.

She had an inkling this was the 'other' Shepard. Something in her gut, which wasn't usually wrong. However, what the hell one said to one's self when one wasn't actually just talking to a mirror escaped her at the moment.

Well, this was just weird. "Uh. Joker asked me to come up here." Which was sort of true. She looked through the door at her cabin. Seemed normal enough.

Shepard ducked her head, laughing slightly. "Don't worry, I wasn't planning on squatting. Well, not really."

Her hand was on the door frame, partly for support and partially out of affection. "I didn't realize it came through before the retrofit. I... I don't know, I just wanted to see her again."

Awkward didn't begin to cover it. They even had practically the same voice.

Shepard shrugged, "You can if you want. I'm pretty sure Joker will get use to the idea. The person I replaced had a real nice apartment so I haven't been staying here."

"That I can understand. Don't know that any place that feels more like home."

"It'd take getting used to again." She motioned to one of the Cerberus logos that hadn't been removed yet. "Seeing that thing everywhere I mean."

She ran a hand through her hair, walking over to the bed, motioning under it. "You hide a bottle under there too?" Sure, it wasn't her ship, but she'd be surprised to find they didn't share that particular trait.

Shepard looked at the logo. "The Alliance fixed her up then?"

She grinned, "Yeah, I did. Don't know if it's still there."

Shepard nodded, pulling out the bottle of iced brandy she had stashed there ages ago. "You're a better woman than I am. I drank the whole bottle the night before going through the Omega-3 Relay." She grinned, pouring them both a glass.

"And yeah, Alliance did a retrofit during my 'honorable incarceration.' Removed the Cerberus tech, upgraded some systems. It finished right as the Reapers hit Earth."

The way Shepard's face darkened even now at the mention of the Reapers was impressive.

"I had something else to distract me that night." She took the glass offered to her.

"Honorable incarceration. That sounds about right." She wasn't surprised to hear Reapers hit Earth. Part of her wanted to ask about it, but a larger part never wanted to know.

"Oh?"

One eyebrow arched as she took a sip. "I spent that night getting drunk, and you got laid? Clearly your universe was more fun." She had to wonder if this version of herself hadn't sacrificed Kaiden. That might explain it...

Shepard couldn't help letting a grin peek through thinking of that night. As hard as everything was after that, it was one perfect moment in all of it. "It had it's perks."

She wasn't sure, but they even seemed to have the same grin. Weird.

"You and Kaiden?" She wasn't exactly subtle. "Or Liara?"

She shifted awkwardly. She never was very good at talking about the romance thing. "Garrus actually."

To her credit, the only thing that betrayed her shock was the glass stopping halfway to her lips. Strangely enough, Shepard's initial surprise had little to do with the fact he was a Turian. It really was more the reaction she assumed people got when they thought about kissing their brother.

"You picked a good one," she said with utmost sincerity. "Garrus in my world is the man I trust the most in the galaxy and my best friend. I can see it." Something about her tone signaled the other woman could consider it dropped.

"This universe is plenty insane though. Ever thought I'd share a drink with myself."

She could actually understand her surprise. If someone had told her when she first met Garrus what would happen she wouldn't have believed them. "Glad to see things aren't that different. Man I trust most and best friend sound about right."

"It's a nice crazy. Less deadly crazy, for the most part."

Before she could try and even picture what would go where (without massive injury, dear God, she had to not think about this), Shepard took another drink.

"Well, to be fair, we gave it a high curve for crazy." She almost wanted to ask if Kaiden had survived in her universe, but reaffirming that the odds were even either way was counterproductive. She'd tortured herself with that for too long anyway.

"At least there's no Reapers. Or Cerberus, or hell, even the Alliance. That's a vast improvement."

"Yeah. They can throw whatever they want at me as long as they keep away Reapers, Cerberus and the Alliance." Eh, it might be tempting fate, but she was pretty happy here.

"What are they throwing at you? I've heard some weird stories about this place."

Zombies being one of the more sane things, really.

"I've really only heard the stories, too. I haven't been here that long, either, just a few months." But nothing she heard could be much worse than where she'd come from.

"Can't wait," Shepard muttered to herself, polishing off the drink as she stood up.

"I'm going to see if Williams has room until I sort out this mess. Don't worry, I really wasn't planning on squatting in your ship." It was said goodnaturedly, but Shepard wanted to make it clear she wasn't trying to step into the other woman's territory.

"Thanks for the drink."
