Who: Sam Winchester the New and Mary the Virgin.
What: Coffee!
When: The Friday after Sam's arrival.
Where: Coffee shop in London.
Warnings: Nope!

Mary was out on the patio of the coffee shop that Sam had mentioned. She was a little early, and as such, was reading her book and enjoying the early spring breeze. Every now and then, a little girl of three or four would come and sit down by Mary, and Mary would pull her into her lap, reading to her for a moment or three. It didn't really matter that the girl didn't know the story, she loved sitting with the older lady and Mary loved sitting with the little one.

Sam had gotten over his initial paranoia as best he could for the short time he'd been there, but that still didn't change the way he did things. He had decided to case the situation from across the street for a couple minutes, simply out of habit. But once he realized that the place was safe, he felt at ease about going in.

He caught a glimpse of Mary as he walked across the street, reading to the little girl, and couldn't help the faint smile which eased onto his face. He stepped up and nodded to the girl who saw him first, giving the insincere but warm-enough smile that he gave most kids under the age of ten. "Hi, um... Mary, right?" He greeted, clearly still a little nervous. He offered a hand, however, out of second nature.

The little girl laughed at Sam before running off to go cuddle her mother. Mary grinned at her before turning her gaze to Sam. "Right! You must be Sam." She shook his hand, amused at how he dwarfed her. His hands were easily double the size of hers, and he was about a foot taller than her 5'3". She stood up, smoothing out her dress and beaming up at him. "If you don't like coffee, they make a good hot chocolate here. I get it on ice all the time."

He couldn't help but noticing how petite she was. She had amazing eyes, too. "Wouldn't that make it a cold chocolate, then?" He walked to the door and held it open for her before walking behind and following her in.

"To tell you the truth, I'm way more used to diner coffee than actual espresso, these days. I like espresso just fine, I got addicted to it back in college, but y'know, I've been on the road and it's kind of pricey to hit up coffee shops every day on that limited of a budget." That, and Sam figured that Dean would have a biting remark about how yuppielike it would be have a two-frappacino-a-day habit. "But um, I'll buy today. What would you like?"

"Well, yes, but that's just a silly name." She laughed and walked into the coffee shop, queueing up next to him. "Oh, on road trips, you're pretty much not allowed to drink good coffee. It has to come from a gas station." She smiled and shook her head. "You don't have to pay, I don't mind. I'm going to get a cold chocolate with no whipped cream. I brought cookies, too!" She always had something sweet in her purse.

"Don't worry about it," Sam insisted with a low wave of his hand, "I'm not broke. Actually, I did a little looking into who I replaced, and I'm pretty well off. Not as well off as my brother wound up being, but I'm pretty sure Dean has more money than most countries. Thing is, I don't think I'll be sticking to doing what the guy I replaced was doing." He grimaced faintly at the thought of the profession he'd landed in. He didn't tell Dean or anyone else, for that matter, what it was that the guy he replaced did for a living.

"So you said you run a daycare? Is that something you fell into, or is it something you decided on afterwards? It's obvious you're great with kids, so it's a great fit."

"Well, I'll get the tab next time, then. You're so lucky your brother's here too. It must be nice having your family around. Who did you replace?" It was a pretty standard 'so you just got vortexed' question, but she hoped he wouldn't be too upset by it.

Nodding at his other question, she beamed. "Oh, it's something I fell into here, but I would've done it anyway. I like little ones, they're kind of my calling." She didn't go into that any deeper; if he knew who she was, he'd get it. If he didn't, she didn't want to startle him right away.

"Apparently, the guy I replaced was some sort of modern dance virtuoso; the guy has a handful of dance studios all along the northern half of the UK. I can barely nod my head to a beat," chuckled Sam. He was blissfully unaware of who Mary was, other than a pretty lady with a knack for childcare. "It's good to know that sometimes the cards are dealt fairly here. If everyone got incongruous lives, I'd be more convinced that the Vortex was the work of some malevolent monster."

"Oh, no, some people end up doing just what they did back home. I don't know how it's controlled, but you're not the only one to end up in something silly. At least you don't have to dance?" She tried not to giggle too openly at the idea of him dancing; he was so huge, it was hard to imagine him being very graceful.

Once they got to the counter, Sam ordered an iced hot chocolate with no whipped cream and an iced double latte, before turning back to Mary. "I'm pretty sure this world's grateful that I don't try to assimilate into that life. It'd be disastrous. That, and I'm pretty sure my niece," he still couldn't quite get over the fact that he had nieces that were close to his age, "would shoot me if I actually tried. She's a dancer. It actually is pretty nice to have family here. We didn't have much family back home. It was just my brother and me."

"I know how that feels. It's been just me for a while." She'd been married a few times and in love more, but they kept leaving. Even her children were gone; she had no family that was truly her own. It was just her and a cat with one eye and a gnawed off ear that she'd chosen to name Belle.

"Sorry to hear that." Sam was raised to believe that the only people he could trust were family, and even then that was kind of tenuous. "I'm actually kind of surprised by how many people I know here. From what I hear, it's not that common to have so many people around from a single reality. One or two, maybe, but there's been at least half a dozen people that we know of who've been here, and they're all people that we know personally. And there's been a couple versions of Dean and myself, which is even more weird," he shook his head.

"This place is a trip."

"There's some groups that are really large, and then there's some people like myself who have friends from back home, but no direct family. Gabey counts, and Mikey and Kabie, I suppose. Ariel too." It was kind of a stretch, though, her being related to angels. But not one she was uncomfortable making. "But we do have pretty much every Pony now, they're all so cute."

He didn't really catch on about the angels. Dean had said something about being friends with an Archangel, but the fact that there were angels was something that still didn't quite sink in with Sam. He wandered over to the pickup counter, and raised a brow. "Pony?" He asked, not getting it. "I saw that there's a lot of people from comics. Iron Man, Batman, I even heard there's a few X-Men wandering around. I suppose Marvelverse counts as a single reality."

"You know, My Little?" She laughed, shaking her head. "Bruce is kind of grumpy, but he's always been that way. I've been here a while." She walked toward a table once she saw that he had their drinks in hand, reaching into her tote bag and pulling out a cloth satchel. Untying it, she revealed about a dozen cookies, each a different flavour. "Take your pick!"

"Well yeah, he's Batman, you'd be hard pressed to find a happy-go-lucky one. Unless you count Michael Keaton," Sam said and then laughed softly at the fact that she had a satchel full of cookies. He picked out a snickerdoodle. "Thanks!" he said, "There's my little ponies here? Any care bears? Smurfs?" He had to joke, because the thought of having a bunch of pastel horses running around was way too weird, even for him. "Thundercats?" he tacked on as he handed over her iced hot chocolate.

Taking a sip, she giggled. "No, there's not. And even if there were, you wouldn't know, they're all in human bodies now, the poor things. ... though I do have a big soft spot for the Snorks." She nibbled on a shortbread, smiling sweetly at him. "Your brother - you two sound really close. It's really nice."

"Yeah," Sam responded as he led the way to a small table near the windows, taking the seat that faced the door. "He sorta looked after me ever since I was still in diapers, since dad wasn't able to always be around. We don't always get along, and I don't think we've ever seen eye-to-eye, but he's all I had after dad died. It's a long story," Sam muttered the last part into his latte, keeping eye contact. "He's a dick, but he's got a good heart. I think he cares too much, actually. Might not seem it, but he does."

"Getting along with someone or even liking them - it's not the same thing as loving someone. You can love someone when you're upset with them." She understood that; there were many times that she'd been mad at Meph or Lucifer, but she'd always loved them. "I don't have any siblings. It's probably why I love looking after little ones. I'm never really alone. Kids are just made of love."

"Oh, believe me, I know how that goes. Dean drives me fucking crazy," Sam said with a shake of his head, "but that's how it goes. Family will drive you nuts, but they're there for you when nobody else will be. They won't leave you high and dry." He took a nibble of the cookie. "You actually strike me as a little sister type. It's the sweetness, I think. Only children tend to look out for Number One, you know? But I guess that makes you an exception to the rule." He tilted his head as he gave a sincere, but small smile.

"Oh, that's just because little ones feel things more immediately than adults do. We know tomorrow's coming. We know illnesses pass, and that if a friend is a real friend, they'll always be around. Children live in the moment." She smiled right back at him, a bit more broadly, but just as sunny. "So, you live in London now? Where were you born in the States?"

"Actually, I'm probably going to live up in Leeds. Give Dean and his wife and kids some space," which meant he actually wanted his OWN space, but he felt like sounding a little less selfish than that, "and yeah, I was born in Lawrence, Kansas. Grew up a little bit of everywhere, after that." He shrugged one shoulder, "Spent a lot of time hopping from one town to the other, since dad's work required we travel a lot, but we spent a lot of time in South Dakota. How about you?"

She nodded. "Well, with the portkeys, you can go anywhere you want really fast. You could live in Timbuktu and visit whenever you wanted." She smiled, easily imagining him as a little boy with grass stains on his jeans and dust on his cheeks in South Dakota. But her own lineage came up and she went a bit pale. "Um. A little bit of everywhere, but mostly Florida." That wasn't a lie.

"Ugh, Florida," Sam said with a wrinkle of his nose. "I hated it there, no offense. Nothing but bad news every time we went down there, and it's hot as hell, too. So you traveled, too?" He was surprised, actually. She seemed so grounded, so down to earth. She wasn't like the rest of the kids he met that got uprooted often, like him and Dean were. She had something else about her, too, but he couldn't put his finger on it. All that he knew, was that he was more calm around her than he'd been since... well, for a long time.

It was actually kind of nice, for a change.

"I had to spend time there for a while." She smiled, offering him her iced chocolate to see if he wanted a sip. "I had a weird childhood. I never really had parents for very long." She was happy that he seemed happy, and she dabbed her crumby fingers on a napkin.

He had a moment of awkwardness - what was the polite thing to do, here? Turn it down, or take a sip? - before taking a quick, nervous sip. "Mm," he said with a small nod, and offered a sip of his latte. "Sorry to hear that. You a foster kid, then?" He couldn't help but wonder about her.
