"Girls, you know how crazy this place is, right? How you came here as babies, and then one day you were four and Daddy and Papi don't remember everything in between?" Ray signed as he spoke, his eyes shifting from one to the other of the girls. "And how people come here from all over, and sometimes they're not even from the same place," Ray sighed. He was talking too much, trying to cushion the blow, when the landing was going to be hard, no matter what.
Sofia looked back at him, her eyes wide and confused. Ray tried to force a smile, but it failed miserably. "Is it Mami?" Sofia's voice was small, barely a whisper.
Ray nodded softly. "It's Mami, baby. She's gone. And Marky too." They'd take the news of Drew and Karen leaving hard too, but Orlinda and Mark would hit them harder.
