Who: Ariadne & Arthur
Where: Guildhall & dreamspace
When: Today! Right the hell now!
Warnings: Unlikely.

Being as how they were set up in her office, since it was one of the safer rooms in the Guildhall, quiet and out of the way, Petit had been given the instructions of: 'if this timer goes off and we don't wake up, knock the chairs over, seriously.'
Arthur wasn't expecting there to be any problems, after all, they were only going to a single level down, and only for about fifteen minutes real time. There were very, very few problems that could happen with a situation like that.

They'd decided that it was safer to have Ariadne be the Dreamer, because that way she could change things with impunity, her head, her projections, her free rein, he wasn't about to take that from her.

He'd only gone under once in the time he'd been here, when he was helping Pixel test a new mix, not the one he was using at the moment, because they could do without the eye-searing technicolor, but even after that long he'd still made sure to clean and maintain the PASIV on a regular basis, just so he didn't forget how. He arched a brow over at Ariadne, a small smile catching at the corners of his mouth, "Ready for this?"

"If I don't know exactly what's going to be somewhere. Behind a door, for instance, there just ... won't be anything there." He shrugged, "Or worse, it'll fill in either from memory or from one of the places I keep memorized just in case."

"That'd be okay though, wouldn't it? Filling in a place you have memories in case there's an empty space?" It seemed counterproductive to memorize space you couldn't use.

"Yes and no. It's fine if you're consciously filling something in with pieces from memory, but if I don't consciously fill in the empty space, it fills itself, and the two locations don't always match up." He shook his head, "Sometimes the filler doesn't even match up with itself."

Ariadne had to laugh as she sat on one of the park benches by the fountain of Atlas.

"You mean like a hallway from Versailles showing up in the Sears Tower?"

"Or a hall closet opening up into Pangaea having overtaken downtown Poughkeepsie, yeah." A twitch of a smile, "Like I said. Dicey."

She had to smile back.

"Yeah. Dicey. How much do you think we have left on the timer?"

"We've been here, what? Half hour? Forty-five minutes? We've got a couple hours." He arched a brow then, "Why? What are you planning?"

"Oh, don't look at me like that. We're not going to do a two person Inception. I just had other types of buildings I wanted to try. See if I could get away with it. The projections here really seem to not feel this is wrong, don't you think?"

Honestly, she had forgotten how intoxicating it was. That feeling of I did this and it's working.

"Well that's because they're yours." He said, "And you're the one changing things, that's normal. If I started changing things, they'd take notice."

He shrugged, making a sweeping gesture to indicate the whole courtyard, "So, let's see what you can do."

The change wasn't subtle. In a split second, everything went from 18th century France to an ultramodern lobby in a New York hotel.

A familiar lobby, with a bar just there in the northwest corner.

"Huh. I can pull it from memory." It wasn't Arthur's this time, it was hers.

"Be careful pulling from memory." He reminded, "Unless you're positive you'll remember it's another time and another place, it's easy to get lost, too easy."

"But it's not really a real place, it's a memory of a dream. That's different, isn't it?"

Already the projections were looking their way, obviously searching. Ariadne had a terrible feeling that it wasn't different at all.

Arthur kept calm, because he didn't want to give the projections any more reason to look their way, he'd been swarmed before, and it was never pleasant, "It's different." He replied, keeping his tone light, conversational, "But not in the way you think, because that just means you already know it's a dream. Even easier to lose the line, and easier to be noticed."

Ariadne was trying her best to not remember Cobb's subconscious and being stabbed. She looked at him, and the world shifted into a completely different setting.

A park in no particular city on an average sunny day. It was the first thing she could think of in a near panic.

He was startled for a moment at the sudden change of venue, but settled again a moment later, "Forgot how fast you were at that." He shook his head, "Relax. I'm the one who'll get swarmed first, your head, remember?"

"Really trying to avoid any swarming, if that's okay with you." Ariadne took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. It wouldn't help if they were worked up.

"It happened in Cobb's head once. I'm really not in a hurry to relive that."

"It happens pretty often, actually. Not my favorite way to wake up, or anyone's I don't think, but avoiding it is good whenever possible."

He smiled then, "So, new area, you going to show me around?"

In the back of her mind, she knew Arthur was trying to distract her; to calm her down so she didn't think of angry projections swarming and...

Right.

"I'm almost ashamed to admit this was an undergraduate project. Design the perfect park."

"Nothing wrong with that. I've got a couple places that started out as projects that I just modified."

She'd probably be surprised to find that her city-labyrinth was one of those. For a moment he wondered if she'd recognize it, half-demolished and still smoldering in places.

"It just was the first thing that popped into my mind."

They walked along a quiet trail, only occasionally being passed by an older couple on a stroll or children playing games that children make up and promptly forget the rules to. There were trees, a small pond and a surprising amount of space for what was obviously a park in the city.

"How far does it go?" He asked, "Or is it a loop, we could keep walking and never get to the edge, even though the buildings are obviously just in sight?"

He was still trying to distract her, a little, but he was genuinely curious, a loop of that magnitude was both simple and complex, and it wouldn't surprise him at all if she'd done it.

Ariadne just gave him a small, almost sly smile.

"Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies."

That got an actual smile out of him. She seemed to be better at getting those than most people were, "Good girl." It wasn't derogatory the way he said it, just amused and somehow warm, "You catch on quick."

"Yeah, except for when I'm trying to not get people killed." She scowled a little. Watching Arthur get torn apart would not exactly be the best start to this brave new world.

"I keep forgetting all the rules. Design is easy enough, but..."

"And it doesn't help that they're ... hn, situational, most of them. What works one place might not be as hard and fast somewhere else."

Another small smile, "The basics are easy enough. You can mess with whatever you want to in your own head, as long as you're calm about it. But doing it in someone else's is just a bad idea."
