The Doctor needs more days like this. ([info]daftoldface) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Entry tags:ninth doctor, rose tyler (s2)

WHO: Rose & Nine
WHERE: Karn (except in this world, it's called... um... Yarn. Who cares.)
WHEN: Tonight (in a Timey-Wimey sense)
WHAT: A New Beginning
WARNINGS: Absolutely no idea.

Eleven had given the Doctor another place to check into in his hunt to extend Rose's life and, if he was lucky, grant her regeneration. She'd already spent more time in the Time Vortex than most, and from what he understood that alone had changed some of the other companions. Add in the Bad Wolf incident, and her changed DNA, he felt like he had all the pieces to the puzzle and just was failing to make them fit.

And, clever as he was, this hadn't changed.

He landed the TARDIS on the world of Karn, or whatever they called it here. Rather than leaving Rose behind the Doctor had taken her along, knowing full well if he kept trying to coddle her she'd likely get quite cross with him.

"Karn wasn't somewhere we could visit in the old universe," The Doctor said to Rose, spinning a wheel and turning a lever. "It was behind the time lock."

"Behind the--oh." It hadn't occurred to her that this universe could be that different. Earth was practically the same. There wasn't a time lock? Well, there wouldn't be, would there? All that hadn't happened here. Strange that after all they'd seen, this was the part that made her head spin.

She really didn't know what sort of questions to ask. The Doctor clearly had something on his mind, working him up. She knew the time lock was a sensitive subject, and she worried asking the wrong question would get a bad reaction. She didn't want to throw him off whatever it was.

The Doctor held out his hand to her, walking over to the doors. "Karn is where they could make the Elixir of Life."

Admittedly, the Doctor hadn't told her all of his plan, but he wasn't doing that on purpose either. He talked quite a bit, but sometimes didn't realize that he wasn't saying the important bits and just assumed they likely got out at some point.

Like this latest plan. He knew he told her the night he'd asked her to marry him, but probably not brought it up since. Not intentional, just a touch daft.

"Ready then?"

Rose took his hand, even knowing absolutely nothing about what he had planned. She didn't need to know. She would always, always take his hand.

"Elixir of Life?" she asked as they started out the door. "For.. bringing dead people back? Eugh." That really didn't sound like a very good plan. "Or giving to teapots and silverware they do little song and dance numbers?" She really wasn't sure where he was going with this, but it sounded very exciting.

"Ooh! Dinosaur fossils and bring them back! Well, not the big ones. The little cute ones." Maybe they could sing and dance. "How cute would a little mini-dinosaur conga line be?"

The Doctor just let her go on a minute, because if he was strictly honest with himself, that did sound rather charming. "Well, no. The Elixir of Life is something the Sisters used to use to extend life spans. We'd use it occasionally if a regeneration or something was going wrong. I'm hoping the hot springs are still here."

That's where it was made. Shouldn't matter if no one was on the planet. He was counting on it, actually.

"Oh, right." That made more sense. Extending life spans. They'd talked about making sure she was with him forever, but it was a little different to think that it might be today. There was a lot to think about! And it seemed like this should require as much planning as the wedding, but she hadn't been doing anything.

What about her mum and dad? And the other her? Living forever with her Doctor sounded great in theory, but now that it was about to become reality... Outliving all of her friends, even outlasting her world..

She didn't really know how to say any of that, though. "Do they have cherry-flavoured?"

Blissfully for the moment unaware of all that, the Doctor could only laugh. "Tasted more like bananas, if you ask me. I like bananas. Bananas are good."

He took her hand, leading her out of the TARDIS. "It's not a bad taste, which for medicine isn't normal at all really."

"So.. Will I keep aging, then? Or will I always be twenty?" So many questions, and these were some of the least important, but the easiest to ask. "Will my hair keep growing? Oh, probably will. Is there an Elixir that keeps me from having to shave my legs?" Oh, she was getting babbly. Probably one of the clearest signals that she was nervous.

The Doctor stopped, standing in front of her with his hand still in hers.

"You will, although a lot more slowly. Hair will keep growing, and never heard of anything with the leg shaving, although there is one that can change the color, but that's a different planet all together." His expression was unreadable.

"What's wrong, Rose?"

"I just.. hadn't really been thinking about it. I've been thinking so much about the wedding, not about this and.. It's just more real, now, all of a sudden. There's a lot I haven't thought about. I don't know how it all works."

"So I'll live a really long time. Still human, though? Or will I regenerate? What will happen when I drink it? Will it hurt?"

She didn't know anything. She trusted him, she did! She didn't even think of letting go of his hand for a second. She was just nervous, and sometimes knowing things helped.

The Doctor stopped, leaning against a tree and on an impulse stroking back some of her hair from her forehead.

"I'm sorry. I should have already explained, just so caught up in the how of it all. The idea would be you'd be human plus Time Lord DNA. You'd regenerate, same as me. You won't have my memories though, so it shouldn't overwhelm you." He smiled a little, kissing her forehead.

"And I don't know. I don't think it will hurt, but the only times I've used it I already was in pain. Don't think it made it worse."

Rose immediately pulled close to him, feeling a bit clingy. She really didn't want to be away from him for a second.

"Will I be smarter? Suddenly know a bunch of advanced maths? Will I be able to speak Gallifreyan? Will I read really fast?" She was already overwhelmed, but leaning on him helped.

She was glad he was slowing down for her and letting her ask all these questions. Normally she would just dive along with him, not knowing anything. That was part of what he loved about her, she knew.

This was big, though. Really big. And she knew it wouldn't always be happy. There were things that haunted the Doctor, and she wasn't naive enough to think she'd avoid all of the darker corners of the universe. This wasn't something she could follow him blindly into; She had to make a choice. Otherwise, the first time something heartbreaking happened, the Doctor would blame himself for pushing her into it.

The Doctor held her close, one hand gently stroking her back, his lips feathering kisses at her temple. They had time
He wouldn't rush though this, it was too important.

"Some of it, I don't know. I can likely teach you Gallifreyan, and have it make sense. You might find the same about maths and science. It just fits. And you'll read fast I think. It won't overwhelm you quite as badly as last time, but you'll understand the Time Vortex. It just will click. And since your brain is wired for it now, it won't burn."

His Bad Wolf. How glorious she had been.

"I can promise you though, you will be Rose Tyler. Personality will be yours, your memories, all of it. Even Regeneration, it'll be the same you inside. Just sometimes different things taste right, or different things make more sense. The core remains, and I'll be there every time."

He said that with all the gravity it deserved.

Rose nodded, taking a deep breath. That was comforting. Things were seeming a bit less scary. A bit. "So.. the Elixir's giving me Time Lord DNA?" The science didn't really matter that much to her. She just sort of wanted to know what she'd be. It helped to know she'd still be herself. "Maybe I should ask for the long version afterwards, when I'll actually get it," she said with a small smile.

She probably should at least mention that she was thinking of it. "Mum and Dad.." She didn't really know how to finish that sentence. "Probably'll need you a lot in a couple decades." There wouldn't have been any changing that even if she stayed human. Most children did outlive their parents. She'd at least have the Doctor to help.

"I know. But you'll find time doesn't move quite as fast as you think it does," he murmured, pulling back just enough to look in her eyes. "Your folks will be here a long while yet. And that's a bridge to cross when you get to it, not look down the road for."

The Doctor tried to not detach from emotion when he explained the plan. "It's sort of an addition. An augmentation; human plus time lord. Couldn't just replace it all, this is more of an improvement. We evolved this way because of our proximity to the Time Vortex for billions of years. You've spent enough time to already have been changed. Should be easy enough, just helping along the process. You're already a time traveller. Just will change a bit more."

Rose smiled a little, nodding. The whole thing was still sort of assumed. She didn't mind. She trusted him with everything, but she knew it couldn't all rely on her trusting him. She didn't want him assuming responsibility for this, in case something went wrong. It couldn't all be his fault, until the end of time. She didn't want either of them blaming him down the road.

"So what you're saying is:" She took on his accent, or the closest impression she could do, "Rose Tyler, I love you and I promised you forever. I've come up with this incredibly complicated science-y plan, now it's up to you. Do you want to drink my banana-flavored elixir?" She couldn't help a small smile, in spite of the seriousness she was trying to affect. "Are you ready for forever?"

The Doctor couldn't help but grin, in spite of the seriousness of the moment. "Couldn't be more ready."

He leaned in, sealing the promise with a kiss.

"And I do love you. More than anything."

And there he was, still trying to take all the responsibility. She smiled, shaking her head. She supposed she couldn't blame him. He'd been at this for hundreds of years, after all, and she knew the only thing he wanted to do was keep her safe.

"I'm aware," she said with a small smirk, kissing him. "I love you, too. And I absolutely want forever. This sounds like a really good plan, and I'm ready."

The Doctor took her hand and wordlessly started off towards the mountain range in the distance. If the springs did exist here, they'd sure as likely be there.

The planet wasn't at all how he remembered it. The landscape seeme teeming with life rather than the desolate waste he could recall. Waterfalls and lakes lay amid a rich forest And in the middle of the clearing, he and Rose came across a crashed space ship.

Rushing ahead, his hand still clutching hers, he examined the ship. It looked like it had been there for centuries. Something tickled the back of his brain, when suddenly, everything in the universe, time and space clicked into place.

"... It's Chula."

The planet was beautiful. She wouldn't mind the hike through the forest and the mountains. The ship was a little surprising, though. It just seemed to come out of nowhere, and parts of it were overgrown.

This wasn't where the elixir was, was it? It wasn't exactly what she'd pictured.

She followed along, choosing her steps carefully as they walked along the rubble. "It's what?"

The Doctor's first impulse was to run towards the ship, throw open the door and see if it would work. Rose had suffered damage from the Vortex and had just enough of a change started that if the nanogenes believed he was the correct pattern, which there was no reason they shouldn't, they would mimic his make up.

But he had to explain. This was her choice, and there would be no secrets, no rushing.

"Do you remember when we met Jack? During the Blitz? This is a Chula ship, just like his."

"Yes!" Rose's eyes lit up when she realized what he was talking about. Something she had encountered before. "The Blitz! With the boy and his mother."

She didn't quite follow where he was going with that, though, or why they would have crashed here.

"Hey, who are you asking to be your groomsmen?" She needed to get this sorted soon so she would know how many bridesmaids she could have.

The Doctor blinked at Rose, then had to laugh. He couldn't help it. As things went, that was utterly human.

"Um, Jack and the other me, I suppose. Maybe the male Pond. But that's not the point." The Doctor took Rose's hand, leading her to the ship's hatch.

"Remember the nanogenes? How they healed the boy?"

"Right. And they tried fixing other people to be like him, but when they found his mother, they were able to make things right." See? She paid attention, sometimes. "Good times, eh?"

She followed along. "Well, the other me, I think. And if you ask Rory, I can ask Donna and Amy, too. Have to tell me now, though, so I can pick a color for bridesmaid dresses that doesn't clash with red hair." Her problems were important, too.

As hard as he was trying to turn her into a Time Lady, the Doctor had no illusions that this sort of conversation would go away. This was less human and more 100% Rose Tyler.

"Right. Sure. Both Ponds. Rose, my point is the nanogenes repaired the DNA with the closest blueprint it could find, remember?"

He gave her a look. A Meaningful Look. With all capital letters.

She'd been about to ask if he thought Jenny was too old to be a flower girl when he gave her That Look. "Yeah... So you think.. Wait. You think if I'm hurt they'll use you as a blueprint and fix me using Time Lord DNA?"

"Will that work? It wouldn't just change back as soon as I'm around my mum? Will it stick? How much like you would I be? Will my ears get bigger?" That wasn't really the part she was thinking of, but he would get it. "What if--" Well, that was a long way off and she felt weird talking about it, but it was now or never. "What if we decide to have kids, they wouldn't be inbred, would they?"

"It's matching the species code, not the entire fingerprint. The boy didn't turn into his mother, just back into a human. And as far as they're concerned, you're halfway there. Your DNA has temporal damage from the vortex. It might be enough."

The Doctor walked back to her, gently putting his hands on her shoulders. "The nanogenes will stay here. It might not even work, but we'd be in no worse shape if it doesn't. And you wouldn't change outwardly at all, I should think. Nothing wrong there, just at the cellular level. You wouldn't turn into my big eared sister."

He grinned, but his eyes were serious. "It's your choice, Rose."

Rose nodded, looking up at him. "This makes sense. And it sounds more thorough.." She understood this plan a little better. She wasn't sure how drinking something could change her into a Time Lord. A longer-lived human, maybe, but. Well, this way made a lot more sense. If it worked. And from the Doctor's excitement, she had a good feeling it would.

"Might want to make sure there aren't any frogs or anything around. Wouldn't want them to get confused and pick the wrong blueprint." She grinned, just a touch nervous about this all.

"I'm sure," she said, before he could ask.

The Doctor smiled, walking over to the ship's hatch door. "I'll make sure. You would still be a pretty frog, but not quite what we are going for, eh?"

Using his sonic, he opened up the sealed hatch. Chula ships had a failsafe lock on a crash, even drones like this. No one had touched the ship since it went off course.

Stepping into the hull, the Doctor pulled Rose close. "Please, little nanogenes. One more day like this."

He kissed her, pouring all his hope into a single action.

She kissed him back, not really noticing any change at first. It was a slow process, starting at her hands and feet where there wasn't much difference. She was about to ask him when it would start when it hit her chest.

Growing a new heart wasn't exactly an easy process. She coughed, trying to catch her breath without much success. Her knees buckled beneath her as her fingers grasped for the Doctor's arms.

Her mind.. It wasn't as overwhelming as the time vortex had been, but everything was expanding. It was almost as though you could fit an entire galaxy in there, and it made her feel so far away from everything. Like she and the Doctor were an entire universe away..

But it was only one heartsbreaking moment. Then as quickly as it had expanded, it contracted again and she was thrust back into the Doctor's arms, closer than ever. Her legs had long since gone weak and she would've fallen if he hadn't been there to catch her. He would always be there to catch her.

Rose looked up at him, her breath still heavy and a thin sheen of sweat on her brow. There was a playful twinkle in her eyes.

"Are you my Doctor?"

The Doctor held her against him while the change happened, almost in awe as the nanagenes went about their work in a swirl of gold around them. The traces of the Vortex in Rose seemed to glow too, and the Doctor could barely contain himself as he saw her eyes open again.

It was his Rose. It had worked. He knew as certainly as he knew his own name that Rose was now a Time Lady.

"Fantastic," he managed fervently, lifting her in a crushing hug straight off the ground with an undignified whoop of joy.
