Who: Jenny, Prince Thomas, Princess Cimorene, Gaius du Lac and Melora Hawke. Possible guest appearance by the Eleventh Doctor, depending on how much trouble they get into.

When: Dec 29. Before New Years!
Warnings: Nah, nothing!

This ride seemed to be a bit longer than most Jenny had taken in the TARDIS. It was possible the planet was a good deal further away. Or, the Doctor might have been taking the scenic route in order to have more time to observe Jenny interacting with this group of teenagers she'd brought on board his TARDIS.

The princess was still dressed in clothes that look like they'd come out of a fairytale--though her dress was a sensible cotton rather than satins and silks. Still, it was a good bit fancier than jeans. She sat in one of the chairs Jenny had brought out, with a book on her lap. She glanced over at Thomas. "Are you going to spend the whole ride glaring and grumbling about how horrible I am for judging you based on my past experience with princes," Past experiences he didn't know anything about, mind, "Or are you going to try to prove me wrong?" At least that would be something useful.

There was some obvious tension between the royalty, but the Time Lords seemed to be staying out of it. The wizards weren't much help either, though Gaius had tried taking each of them aside and explaining the other's viewpoint.

"How about this?" Jenny asked, rolling a large, circular shield into the room and over to Melora and Gaius. They were trying to find items to test fireproofing spells on. Cimorene's required ingredients they didn't have, and it was meant for people. A shield couldn't repeat the spell couplets.

Thomas was doing his level best to not get irritated and not yell at Cimorene and not be a poor guest, but if she insisted on needling him, he wasn't sure his level best would be near enough.

"I'm going to be true to my nature. All I want is to see a dragon which will likely be very interesting, and then go home. I'm sure I can restrain any impulses that might lie in my princeliness to slay one, but I sure as hell won't be doing it to prove anything to you. I don't need to. Being a prince doesn't define me."

"Then tell me what does!" Cimorene was trying to give Thomas a chance, even if she was being a bit abrasive about it. She'd stopped accusing him of wanting to kill dragons a long time ago, but he wasn't giving her anything to replace the stereotype, except maybe for 'brooding'.

If he was different from the princes she'd met before, she wanted to get to know more about him. But she was near giving up on him.

This was not going so well. Gaius liked for his friends to get along, and Cimorene was very cool. He wanted her to be his friend, but if she kept fighting with Thomas he didn't know how well that would go.

Jenny rolled out the shield. It wouldn't work for Cimorene's spell, but Gaius had a few that would work on objects like that.

"Yeah, Jenny, that will work. I've got a spell. I don't know if it will work with DRAGON fire though."

"It would work for the spell, but I'm not really sure we want to lug that thing around." The shield was big enough to cover two of them, if they crouched. Not something they could just strap on their backs. It would be a great barricade, but how would they get it around difficult terrain and stuff.

Melora thought the whole exercise was a little silly. She wasn't really a shield person in general, and she had a hard time getting all frightened over dragons. "What about, like... A cape, or something. A blanket that we can throw over ourselves?" She glanced over at Gaius. "Would something like that work?"

Thomas really wanted to count to five and try to forget this conversation was happening, but that wasn't likely.

"Me. Thomas Pendragon, a rather good swordsman but no where near my father yet, a good friend and a nice enough bloke who likes to try to get his friends in Pathfinder games and watches old movies on television with his grandmum just because. I define me, that's all. Not His Royal Highness me, just me."

"A robe would work just as well, yeah," Gaius said, and be much easier to get around it. "Really...I mean, no reason I can't just cast it on our clothes, though, something like a hat or something to cover our heads would be good." He was still not sure if his spell would protect against dragon fire. And they wouldn't know unless they tested it, and he didn't really want the first test to be with a dragon who was angry with them.

He tried to ignore Thomas and Cimorene's bickering, but it really was getting difficult.

The swordfighting thing wasn't too surprising. Princes usually got to learn some, although most didn't bother going very far with it. If Thomas really was good, that was interesting. It meant he didn't just assume someone else was going to defend him.

"I'd like to work more on my swordfighting. I didn't get many lessons before my parents found out and made me stop." Cimorene's tone was a good bit more gentle now. Maybe they could actually talk.

"I don't really know what those other things are," she admitted. Television was like the internet, wasn't it? She hadn't paid much attention to it, preferring books instead. "What are Pathfinder games?"

	And just like that, the heavens parted, and peace reigned in the TARDIS. "Well, telly is just a box with um, plays in it." That'd make sense, right? "And Pathfinder is a sort of game you play with dice. Make characters and go on adventures, that sort of thing. You don't get to do a lot of adventuring, even here. It's sort of a way to pretend you are." (Reply to this)

"Well, let's give it a try. We can cast fire at eachother to see if it works," Melora said, looking excited for this part at least.

"Hey! Maybe no fire in the TARDIS!" Jenny interjected. She hadn't explicitly been told that fire was against the rules, but it didn't exactly sound like a good idea.

"Adventures?" Cimorene asked. "Like in a book? You're writing a story together, sort of?" She couldn't quite picture what dice had to do with it, but it sounded interesting.

	Gaius grinned, "Yeah, fire in here would probably be a bad idea. Also, casting fire at each other with a, as of yet, not perfected spell, probably not so good. Maybe cast it on some clothes, and just cast fire at the clothes, like, without people in them." (Reply to this)

This was much better than fighting. As a rule, Thomas could see anyone's side of things and usually get along with them. But she'd found the one sore spot. Being defined by his birth tended to annoy him to no end. Not frankly fair of him to hold it against her, though. From the sounds of it, she'd been in the same boat.

Melora sighed melodramatically. "I'm Gaius, I like safety," she said in a high, teasing voice. He was right, of course. Shooting fire at a pile of laundry just didn't sound as fun.

Cimorene smiled. "That sounds like fun, actually." She had been getting a little bored. Of course, she was hoping this planet would help with that. "And not something I can imagine Prince Therandil or any of the others doing." She smiled to Thomas. Being different from Therandil was a good thing.

The TARDIS landed loudly and Jenny ran to throw open the door.

Oh, Jenny was definitely with Thomas on this one. They were on the ground; it was time to go! "Yup! Time to go! Work it out on the way! There probably won't be any dragons right outside."

Probably.

Jenny followed Thomas outside, and her gaze was immediately drawn upward. They were in the middle of a lush forest. "Wow. Dad said there were giant trees here." Jenny still found this sort of vegetation incredibly impressive. She knew Earth wasn't like where she was born, where people fought wars over it.. But even on Earth, most of her time was spent in cities where you just didn't see trees like this. It had actually stopped her in her tracks.

Melora shrugged to Gaius. "Guess we could try to cast on the walk?" She kind of enjoyed the impulsive nature of Thomas and Jenny, and was itching to follow them. But she wasn't about to abandon Gaius, either.

"Is it something I can help with?" Cimorene asked.

	Thomas eyed one of the trees. "Remember when we got stuck in those trees in Hyde Park, Gaius?" They'd been really young then, and climbed too high to get back down. Well, safely at any rate. He'd wound up with his arm in a cast for awhile. "Trees like this are just meant to be climbed." So Thomas started up it, hoping to spot a dragon from the higher branches. (Reply to this)

	Jenny was shaken out of her reverie when Thomas started climbing. "Oh, hang on, I'm not sure if 'giant trees' means trees that are really tall, or if they're sentient giants that look like trees." One couldn't be too sure, and if that were the case, they probably wouldn't appreciate being climbed on. It did look like fun, though. "Wait for me." (Reply to this)

	Jenny was quickly changing her mind. Surely if they were sentient, a giant that looked like a tree had to have a sense of humor, right? She looked over at Thomas, grinning. "Race you!" "Ooh! Are we climbing?" Melora followed behind Gaius, looking up at the trees. Melora definitely knew her way around trees. Though, these were a good bit taller than the ones she was used to. 	It felt good to be this far away from civilization and all it's forks. No state dinners, no attempts to match him up with this Princess or that duchess. "This is brilliant." Thomas sat on a branch, grinning from ear to ear. (Reply to this)

Jenny hadn't ever climbed a tree before. It was one of the many childhood experiences she'd missed out on. She waited a minute to watch the others before starting up one tree.

"Do you see any caves?" Cimorene called up.

Melora was a little monkey-elf, more at home in trees than on the ground, sometimes. She was up faster and higher than either of the boys. "Can't see much from here," she called down. There were too many trees, and they were all so tall. "I'll have to go higher!" She wouldn't have the problem the boys used to have of getting stuck.

	Thomas saw Jenny starting up and lowered a hand down to her. "Here, let me help you up." His grin was still in place, although he was starting to doubt dragons were really on this planet. (Reply to this)

Jenny managed to get most of the way there, then reached up to take Thomas' hand and letting him pull her up onto the branch. Climbing wasn't quite as exciting as running or jumping, but she liked trying new things. And there were so many new things!

"Ow!" She looked down at her hand, trying to locate the source of the sharp, stabbing pain. Surely it had to be some big dagger or something, from the pain.
