WHO: Marian & Bethany Hawke
WHEN: Today!
WHAT: Sisterly bonding activities and such.

Denerim's market place had nothing on the Galleria, Bethany decided emphatically as she waited for Marian to arrive. The lights, the music, the people were having an amazing effect on her mood. She was still a trifle irritated from the kidnapping debacle, but there was something so cheering about the festive music and fat man in a red suit that seemed to be everywhere.

The strangeness of this world and of finding a sister who both knew her and yet still didn't was wearing off. For the first time in what felt like forever, Bethany was happy.

It'd taken less than five seconds to tell Varric he could defend his own damn ass for a little while. Anyone else would've likely gotten shot in their own ass for a comment like that, but Hawke had a way with words. And also with fire, which probably helped.

She'd grown to love this world's little oddities since arriving here. The holidays they had - some mirrored some that they'd had back in Thedas, only much more extravagant. She approached her sister with a smile, the slight chill in the air forgotten. "Not kept you out here too long, have I? I really need to work on my timing..."

Bethany gave her sister a tight hug, for the moment almost overcome with Christmas cheer. This stuff was catching...

"Not at all, I just got here too. I was making a mental list of everyone to buy for." It was her first Christmas and she would do it right.

It was as catching as it was blinding, because Hawke couldn't help but return the hug, perhaps a bit tighter than she'd intended. She was still getting over the whole thing with Bethany being alive, so that was pretty much allowed.

"There's a lot of people. I vote cutting Carver off the list for passing out in the pantry," as hilarious as it'd been, she'd been the one who'd had to drag him out as Esmerelda tutted and muttered something she couldn't begin to understand. "Or keep him on and just buy him something embarrassing. Either could work."

"But then he'd whine so," Bethany teased. "I have no idea what to get anyone, actually. What if their tastes are completely different?"

She could likely get Varric a bottle of good whiskey though.

It wasn't like Carver whining was anything new. If he didn't do it, it was cause for concern... albeit not really the sort of concern most people expected.

Hawke hadn't really considered that, to be honest. "I think everyone's almost the same. Merrill's still a bundle of joy and accidental innuendo, Aveline still likes stabbing wrongdoers..." actually, thinking about it... "The only thing that's different is probably that Fenris is getting nicer."

Bethany had been about to laugh (if that didn't sum up Merrill...) when Marian had to go and mention him.

Yes, he got italics.

Trying to not blush, Bethany schooled herself into the best indifferent face she could. "Oh?"

Now, it might've been a while since Hawke had last had the chance to talk with her sister, but some things you never forgot.

Like how said sister reacted when you stumbled across something blush-worthy. She wouldn't make it too obvious, even though she was making mental notes to conspire with Varric on the subject. "I don't know what's gotten into him. I think I saw him smile the other day."

The initial hope of finding that Fenris was not in love with her sister in this world had been nice, but Bethany was determined to not get her hopes up.

He didn't even know her.

"Does he have a sweetheart then?"

Hawke shrugged. "If he has one, he's good at hiding it."

True, there'd been that elf-obsessed dryad, for a while, but she didn't seem to appear around him as often as she'd used to. Fenris, for all she could tell, was back to being his usual 'I will brood darkly on my own!' self.

"Oh, would you look at those!" Bethany exclaimed, pointing out an adorable orange set of knitted gloves and scarf. "Perfect for Aveline, don't you think?"

She had learned that distraction was your best bet for getting out of an uncomfortable conversation.

[info]kirkwallchamp

Distraction did indeed work on Hawke, but it didn't do much to make her forget. She'd definitely have to work out some way of getting Fenris and her dear sister close. Perhaps in an inappropriate way.

"She might ask if you're trying to make her seem even more ginger," she commented, with a slight smirk. She'd seen Aveline's children - if there was ever anyone deserving of the term 'ultimate ginger', it was them. "She'd love it, though, I'm sure."

Bethany smiled, picking out a similar set in blue for Isabela. "Everyone can use gloves. I swear, this world gets colder than Kirkwall ever did..."

Not strictly true, but Bethany passionately hated the cold. "I was thinking maybe Anders would like a new coat? I really hope that ragged thing he used to have finally was retired..."

She wouldn't bring up a specific gift for Fenris, now that she had her sister sidetracked. Honestly, she wasn't sure giving him a gift was a good idea. He had never really met here, thanks to the strange splinter of worlds.

If Anders hadn't retired that coat by his own choice, Hawke would've had to have forced him to. Probably with fire, knowing her. "As long as there's no feathers. I think Pouncealot's eaten enough of those in her long years by his side."

Even though it was cute to see the cat riding on his shoulder and eating things she shouldn't do, it wasn't exactly something they should encourage.

Her sister's apparent crush on Fenris, though? Totally something to be encouraged. Even if she wasn't quite sure how to go about it in a way that didn't involve locking them in a room together.

Bethany bit her bottom lip in a familiar gesture of worry.

"I know it wasn't really you, but I'm sorry I returned your Feastday gifts every year. I was angry, and it wasn't right." Technically speaking, this Marian knew nothing about her time with the Wardens and their strained friendship. But oh, it would be good to talk about it finally.

Carver had done much the same thing in protest, so it wasn't like Hawke was completely unaware of what Bethany was talking about. True, Carver had come around to the idea after the incident with the crazy dwarves wanting their blood, but it wasn't something she'd ever forget.

"I couldn't blame you for that," hearing of things like this actually made her glad she'd taken her mother's advice and left Carver aboveground. True, him becoming a Templar had been bad, but him becoming a Warden... it would've been like losing Bethany all over again. "If there'd been some form of choice, I wouldn't have made you go through it."

True, it hadn't exactly been her doing, but the sentiment was the same.

"It was better than dying, Marian," Bethany said sincerely, "And it wasn't all terrible. The Wardens themselves are fine, Stroud is just an ass. I just hated leaving everything behind, and I blamed you. You had your friends, your life, and I felt like I had nothing. I was lonely and it made me bitter."

That and knowing that even if it wasn't official when she left, Marian had Fenris. "You had friends and love and a world of choices. I had service. It just took awhile to realize how much I did really have, once I stopped daydreaming about what might have been."

Calling Stroud an ass was probably an understatement, from the little Hawke knew of him. Wading into a city besieged by Qunari and refusing to help was just dickish... true, it'd let Hawke become the Champion, but that didn't make it much better.

"I can make up for everything I messed up," it'd feel wrong not to. The version of her that Bethany had known was clearly not much like her at all, looks and name aside. "We can make this the best sort-of Feastday in years."

"Marian, you didn't mess things up." Bethany laid a hand on her sister's arm. "You sent me gifts every year, wrote me letters and got all your friends to as well..."

Varric had written her pages and pages of stories while Isabela gave her advice about men and Aveline well wishes. Fenris only wrote once, and she had been sure it was because Marian had made him. She had thrown it away in a fit of piqué and immediately regretted it.

"I was childish about it. Never forget this, you had to make an impossible decision and we did the best we could by it. When I came back to Kirkwall, it was almost like old times." Granted, she'd been kidnapped and held as bait for her sister, but that was technically old times. "It was a different world anyway. You were a warrior, of all things. And you were with Fenris." Bethany watched for a flicker of emotion in spite of herself.

Why was it that her companions and siblings kept coming from worlds where things were so... confusing? She'd never thought of Fenris in that way, ever. Sure, he was pretty and all, but he seriously wasn't her type. Too broody and hatey.

"I think I work better as a mage. Even with Meredith out to trip me up whenever she could," that woman had honestly had Issues, and well warranted that capital I. "The closest Fenris and I ever came was that I taught him how to read a little. Even then he still wasn't exactly a ray of sunshine."

Bethany couldn't help a grin.

So, so stupid. She really thought she'd outgrown this. "Well, if it makes you feel better, Isabela told me in a letter that Anders was furiously pissed off at the whole situation."

She sobered a bit though. In her world, Marian had wound up killing Anders after the explosion. That wasn't something she was going to tell her. "At any rate, we're all here now. And even if there still was the danger of a Calling, I do like it so much better."

Anders being all pissy about Fenris? Ah, some things really didn't change between worlds. Much as Hawke loved the man, he did whine quite a bit.

"This place has no Calling, Darkspawn only when things are crazy, and far better food than what we're used to. What's not to like?" At least, she assumed there wasn't a Calling. Melora and Stefan hadn't mentioned anything of the sort happening to Anders or any of the other Wardens.

"And I imagine there's all sorts of other, non-Darkspawn related crazy to enjoy, right?" The truth was as much as Bethany had initially hated joining the Wardens, she found adventuring was entirely her mien. The idea of just sitting still and living a domestic life seemed entirely at odds with being a Hawke.

"But you are right about the food. Maker, I'm going to gain at least fifteen pounds at this rate."

Where did you even start when it came to this universe's crazy? It honestly gave Kirkwall a serious run for its money. "Well, there was one week where everyone went all... cartoon-y. And there's the kids from the future, obviously, and they say it gets even weirder."

That was almost a scary thought, at least to Hawke. How could things get weirder than surprise Darkspawn and sudden changes in the rules of everything?

Bethany smiled brilliantly.

"No matter what, the Hawke sisters can handle it. And I suppose Carver too." Giggling, she walked towards a men's shop. "Let's see if we can't find something for little brother."

That was honestly a phrase Hawke'd never thought she would hear again. The Hawke sisters, together again, making fun of Carver and righting wrongs for the hell of it.

"I vote something pink. Or rainbow coloured," well, it wasn't like it'd do his manly pride any harm. Being kidnapped had already made him sulk so much that any pride he did have was rather... lacking. "...He's going to hate us, isn't he?"

Hawke couldn't help but laugh. "I think he never got over us dyeing all his clothes silly colours back in Lothering..."

He'd asked for it, honest. It wasn't like them to do things to Carver if he didn't exactly deserve it... oh, who was she kidding?

"Honestly, magenta isn't a silly color..."

Bethany saw a soft grey sweater and instantly thought of Fenris. She could get him something, couldn't she? They'd never technically met, as far as he was concerned, but that wouldn't be weird, right?

Making a face at herself mentally, she instead grabbed some soft sheepskin slippers. "I bet Varric would like these. They look heavenly comfortable."

Hawke shrugged. "It is for armour, apparently." That colour hadn't come out for months. It'd been more than a little funny to see him clearing out a cave full of giant spiders whilst dressed in it.

Now, she was going to behave and not make any moves to pressure her sister into doing anything, much as she'd noticed the brief look at that. "He'll probably write you an epic as a thank you. 'And then Bethany bought me some kickass slippers, fresh from turning a golem into a crispy pile of dust'..."

"Oh, I miss his stories," Bethany said fondly, reaching for a lovely green scarf that just screamed Merrill in an adorable voice. Well, not literally.

"It's so strange how different things are, yet they're not. You are my sister. They are your friends. It's like nothing really changed yet..." Bethany couldn't help a grin. "I'll probably not stop marveling about this for awhile, so I'll apologize in advance."

If it'd actually screamed that, Hawke might've had to set it on fire, and that never really went down well in shops of any kind. Especially since she didn't have the 'it's okay, I'm the Champion!' excuse anymore.

"Marvel all you want. Maker knows I didn't stop for a while after Anders came around to everything," for a while, it'd been almost like he didn't see her as who she was. You couldn't exactly blame him, considering his Hawke had been male, but still...

Bethany took her gifts to the check out, slipping the gray sweater in her stack and hoping her sister didn't notice. Maybe he wouldn't mind.

"So, since I keep getting rather confused by this whole thing, mind outlining just what is going on with you, Anders and Merrill? I find it all sweet, but Maker, I missed everything."
