Who: Aveline and Alistair

Aveline had been very confused. Varric was telling her she should seize the day, and stop moping. But it seemed wrong to move on so soon. She waited three years after her first husband.

But she was finding it was becoming harder to wait. She was jealous when he talked to other women. First, she had never been a jealous woman, and second, she had no right to be jealous, she was the one who decided to wait.

Maybe Varric was right. Of course Varric was right, he was always painful right. So she had told Alistair to meet her has her house and hope that it wasn't too late.

The portkey dropped Alistair off about a mile away from Aveline's place, which meant he had a ways to walk. Which meant he had time to think. She was confused, she said. About You. Me. Us. It started blurring together in his head, youmeusyoumeusyoumeus, a rhythm in his head to match the rhythm of his feet.

Oh Maker, she hadn't spoken to him in days, this couldn't be good, whatever it was it could not be good. But he needed to tell her something. Before whatever not good things happened he had to at least make sure to tell her. Even if he shouldn't, he was going to do it anyway.

Alistair was all but running by the time he got to her house, and almost ran into the door by sheer force of momentum, he was in such a rush to just get to her before everything went wrong. He rapped on the door. Youmeusyoumeusyoumeus, shut up brain, you're not helping.

Aveline opened the door as soon as Alistair started to knock. She was very happy to see him, however confused she was. She didn't like missing coffee or any other meetings she had with him.

She motioned for him to come in, not really trusting herself to say hello without starting to ramble about everything. She knew certain niceties should be met before she started 'serious conversations'. "Um. Come on in. I don't really have mocha, but I made coffee if you'd like some." He liked coffee, start with coffee. Oh, she should have ordered pizza. Wait, they were talking not having dinner. So good, not pizza, but coffee was still good.

Oh no. She looked so serious. Definitely not good. Alistair stepped in, mumbling, "Uh, sure, fine." No, no, not fine, if they stopped to do strange food and drink rituals then the youmeus would probably kill him. But the strange food and drink rituals were probably required before they could talk about anything. Maker's breath he hated social conventions, he never had been very good at doing them even when he did know what he was doing, and right now he certainly didn't know what he was doing. "Thanks."

	Aveline smiled a little and directed him to sit on the couch as she got him coffee with the right amount of cream and sugar. She handed it to him, drinking her own coffee. "Um. So, I'm sorry. The right amount of cream and sugar in his case was lots. And it was good coffee. Not that Alistair noticed. He was much, much too distracted. It's been a lot easier to convince himself he needed to face the problem when he hadn't been...facing the problem. "It's fine," he repeated. "I'm...not good at this either. You already know that."

If only Varric were here. Especially in a dress, as he'd threatened. That would have made things...okay, not easier, just more distracting. But funny.

Alistair set his coffee down on the table. "Look, there's something I really, really need to tell you."

	"...I lied." Alistair reaches forward and takes Aveline's face in his hands, pulling it to his so he can kiss her. It's not an expert kiss. He's not that experienced at kissing. But he certainly means it. And if youmeus is about to go to the Void, or she's about to deck him, or anything, he at least wants one perfect moment to take with him. 	She wasn't expecting it. She was expecting him to say he wasn't interested anymore, there was someone else. But then he did that. She flailed a little, not knowing whether to push away or pull him closer and finally decided to go with closer. She wrapped her arms around his neck. He was a good kisser. Kissing Aveline was every bit as wonderful as Alistair had thought it would be.

Having her kiss him back was a revelation.

He'd meant it to be a quick kiss. Some sort of apology, or explanation for how he'd been acting, or...he didn't even know what. But now that he was actually kissing her, he didn't want to stop. Ever. Breathing didn't seem as important either, for some reason. For this small space of time he had permission to touch her face, to taste her mouth, and he'd stretch that small space of time out for as long as he could.

	This was wonderful. She had been silly to make herself wait for it. It was what she wanted and Varric was right, Donnic might never show up. After a long moment she pulled back to breath. Well, that was pretty promising as reactions went. Right? It was certainly better than a punch to the jaw, or a never do that again, or any one of a hundred other possibilities that he'd been listing to himself pretty much constantly since meeting her in order to stop him doing...exactly what he'd just been doing. "That's a good wow?" he asked hopefully. "Or is it a not-so-good sort of wow?"

"Are you sure?" He hated to be serious now, when things are going well, but it wouldn't be honorable not to at least face the subject. "Aveline...you are married. Ah, sort of. And the last thing I want to do is pressure you into giving up on something that must have been important."

Alistair bent forward and rested his forehead against hers, partly so that he wouldn't have to meet her eyes. "That said, I...can't pretend that I don't want more from you than friendship." He paused and drew back, looking briefly perplexed. "Were there too many negatives in there? I lost count. Nevermind. The point is, things still feel kind of complicated to me and I really don't know what to do about it." He shrugged. "I'm not experienced with this. At all. You know that."

Whereas she'd had two husbands, both of them good men. That was frankly intimidating. Big shoes to fill. Except that analogy...didn't work at all, come to think of it...

Alistair responded with evident enthusiasm, wondering how he'd managed to spend so much time around her without kissing her up until this point. "Likewise," he said, pausing to grin back at her. "Frankly, I don't know how I managed to pretend for this long anyway. It's not as though I was any good at it. Everyone could tell how I feel about you." To embarrassing extents. Though it doesn't seem so important anymore.
