Aveline had called ahead. She told Alistair that she needed to talk and asked him to meet her at the coffee shop. She was worried after he friends had made the fuss that he would think this was a date and had awkwardly said it was just coffee.

She waited at her table, watching for him to come in. He was usually pretty early so she made sure she would be there first.

This time, Alistair was late, because he was dithering.

All right, so it'd been a date. He hadn't meant it to be a date. He hadn't even known it was a date until people pointed it out afterwards. But it couldn't have been a date really, whatever they said. Except that now he wanted it to have been a date. And they were meeting for what was emphatically not a date, just coffee, almost certainly to discuss the thing that hadn't been a date...

Alistair groaned, pulled himself together, and made himself walk around the corner and into the coffee-shop. He managed a weak smile for Aveline, ordered himself an extra-large mocha--if there was ever a time when he needed a caffeine and sugar overdose, this was it--and sat down opposite her. "Hi," he said, with his usual complete lack of suavity. Terrific.

Aveline watched as Alistair entered. He looked so down and the way he sat down withhis mocha was not the cheerful way he usually greeted her. She really wished her friends would mind their own business. "Hi. Thanks for seeing me." She felt so awkward. More than she normally did. She liked Alistair. But how could she give up on her husband so soon? "I'm sorry about this whole mess."

Alistair waved a hand. "Not your fault." He sipped his mocha, examined what he'd just said, frowned, and tried again. "Really, it's not. As far as you and I were concerned, we were spending some time together, as friends, getting food and teaching me some weapon skills I'm going to need. I honestly didn't think there was more to it at the time, no matter what everyone says." |He took another sip. "Actually, if you and I say there wasn't more to it, then there wasn't, no matter what everyone says. I think." A grin flashes across his face, which makes him look more like himself. "This stuff isn't exactly my strong point, as you'd probably noticed."

Aveline smiled. He babbled. She loved his babble. It made her actually feel sad. "Right. Our friends are a little crazy." She took a sip from the coffee. "Not that it's insane; I have a great time with you at the shooting range and getting dinner. It's just. I can't give up after only being here for a few months. And you're great, and I like talking to you, because you don't treat me like the cop who's going to get you in trouble, or the girl, or anything like that. And I really look forward to working with you."

"Saying our friends are a little crazy is like saying the ocean is a little wet," Alistair joked. Who needed a shield when you could deflect things with humor? "I'm...glad to know you don't think it's an insane idea, I'll admit." He wanted to reach out and take her hand, even just for a moment, but he knew better. Hooray for coffee. It gave him something to do with his hands. "Aveline, I like you. I like you a lot. And maybe I could like you more than a lot, given time and...well, permission."

He leaned back in his chair. "But...I do know it's not an option. Honest. And I swear to the Maker, I haven't been spending time with you in the hopes of winning you around or changing your mind or, or anything. I just like spending time with you."

Aveline smiled at the joke. It was true, in a good way.

She blushed when he said he liked her. She did like him a lot, but she had only been here for a relatively short time. "I. I like spending time with you, too. Can we go on like our crazy friends didn't open their big mouths for a while at least? Maybe eventually things can change, but I really like how things were."

Maybe eventually things can change? Oh, there was a thought to keep him awake at night. As much with worry as hope, unfortunately. Alistair did his best to ignore that bit and focus on the rest; it wouldn't be good for either of them if he started second-guessing everything Aveline said or did from now on looking for encouragement. That wouldn't be fair to either of them. Plus it would drive him insane.

"Yes, yes we can. Our crazy friends are crazy, and it is possible for a man and woman to be friends and go to dinner and all that without ulterior motives being involved." Maker forgive him that small bit of hypocrisy. It'd been perfectly possible until he'd thought about it, but Alistair had the sinking feeling those ulterior motives weren't going to go away now that he was aware of them. This was going to be difficult. But he did like Aveline, as a friend as well as a potential something else, and her company was more than worth it as far as he was concerned. Even if friendship was all he could work towards.

"So we're still on for Tuesday, then?" Alistair pulled up a grin. "If I'm lucky I might even hit the target this time. I didn't expect guns to have so much recoil." He hadn't done that badly but he still had a lot to learn. Distance weapons weren't his forte.

	Aveline flushed a bit. This whole thing was probably a bad idea. Part of her wanted him to convince her that they should be 'more than friends', but she didn't know how well she would deal with that. "We're still on for Tuesday, no question.
