WHO: Ezio & Dani
WHAT: First date!
WHERE: Chez Winchester to start
WARNINGS: Possible!

Ezio showed up at the time they'd agreed on, knocking at the door of the large house. He hadn't known she lived in quite such a large house, and resolved to be on his best behavior. Old habits died hard; his family had been well off, but money talked. He wished somehow that he'd brought flowers, even though he'd thought it silly and old fashioned at the time.

That did make him laugh. "Perhaps I will say that, if anyone inquires of me." The waitress came back with two glasses of white wine, and he broke off to thank her before resuming. "I am just pleased I can be interesting enough for a modern lady." Ezio winked.

"You're a lot of things, and interesting is absolutely one of them. You're also charming and dashing and lots of other positive things." She took a sip of her wine, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, wow, I like that."

Ezio chuckled. "You are kind, Dani." He sipped the wine, nodding approvingly. "Firenze is famous for its white wines. And it goes well with the food. We do very simple and plain food, but with the purest ingredients possible."

"I'm not kind, I totally think you're hot." She laughed and shook her head. "I should wait to say stupid things until I can blame it on the wine, yeah?" Her blue eyes closed and she focused on the flavour of the wine, liking that she could drink without worrying about lectures on how the wine was made.

"You are a beautiful woman." He was honest when he could be. Ezio smiled genuinely at her, squeezing her hand. The waitress was nearby, and came over, asking him if they were ready to order. Ezio said yes - trippa alla fiorentina, with fagliotti all'uccelletto. Tripe and beans. "I hope you like offal."

At this rate, her cheeks would never stop burning. "Thank you," she murmured, leaning back in her seat. She liked that he ordered for her; it felt old timey and sweet. "I do like offal. My sister would never ever let me back in the house if I didn't."

"Trippa means tripe. The stomach linings of certain animals - here in Firenze it is usually sheep." Ezio explained. "It is prepared with tomatoes and leeks in a sort of soup. And fagliotti are beans, cooked to an unusual consistency. A delicacy among Florentines." He smiled, relieved that this seemed like it would work out.

Her smile had gone dreamy, and she laughed. "Usually when Annie does the food talk I zone out, but you, you I like." She leaned forward, just so she could keep her volume low and still be heard. "So, have you made contact with Miss Petit? Everything's still the same?"

He appreciated her discretion. "Briefly. Also I spoke to Zevran. Things are mostly the same, thankfully." He didn't mention Ronia; it was neither the time, nor the place.

She wrinkled her nose. "How is the little perv?" Her tone was fond, but it was obvious that she didn't take the elf too seriously. "I'm glad that things aren't too weird for you." It was odd, but she did sort of worry about him already.

Ezio laughed. "I see you have met Zevran. He seems well. The first thing he did was flirt with me, after all." He'd simply grown used to rebuffing the elf's advances.

"If he stops flirting, we need to check to see if he's dead." Well, now seemed as good a time as any. "I'm um. Technically in my past. My mother is due to have my sister and I soon, actually. You got brought into the future, I got brought into the past. I remember a few years ago for me, I was sleeping with my girlfriend, and Zev walked into the room and stares." She did a pitch perfect impression the elf. "'May I help, girls?' I threw a shoe at him."

Ezio blinked hard, eventually just belly laughing. "How utterly rude." He presumed she meant sleeping with, as they said in this time; Zevran would have gone toward that like a duck to water. "I met people before who were in their pasts; it must be a most bizarre feeling. No one who is not at home will ever be totally at ease."

"It's weird, seeing my parents so young, sometimes. But my twin sister is here with me, and the girl I just mentioned is too. She's still a really good friend, so it's nice to have her around. And a bunch of my other friends are too. It could be worse, I guess." She didn't mention all of the crap that had happened to her; it didn't seem like a good time. That was weighty shit for someone who cared about her, much less someone she'd just met.

"If it could be worse, then that is always good." Ezio smiled, running his thumb idly over her knuckles. "To have your family must be very nice indeed. I had my mother and sister for much of my time in Roma, but they have - had - their own lives."

"You have Petit and Zevran and the guild, right?" She squeezed his hand, liking the way he subtly touched her. "Family's important. I don't think I'd have made it through my time here if they weren't here." She'd have turned into a workaholic at best.

Ezio nodded. He still wondered if that was his fate, to simply not make it through. Having the guild was helpful, but he missed Mother. He missed Claudia. He missed Father, truthfully. He sipped more wine, Just smiling a little. Thinking. This place smelled lovely. Familiar odors, at least.

The look on his face worried her, and she looked down immediately. "I'm sorry. ... but for what it's worth, I hope you'll be happy here if you have to stay here. It's never fair when someone's brought here, but I think it can be a second chance for people. My father? He always thought he'd die young, but here he is with a family like he always wanted."

That was a good point, and he did lighten up. "It was enjoyable the last time I was here, I must say. A second chance is always a good thing." It would certainly be interesting. Ezio was about to say more, but then the food arrived. He perked up noticeably; the idea of showing this to Dani pleased him. "Ah, lovely. This looks wonderful." Ezio set the bowl of tripe between them, picking up his fork. "Do you know how to eat this, or shall I explain?"

It was rare that people saw it, but Dani did have a soft, motherly smile. She was smiling it now, and she squeezed his hand. "Explain, please." Her napkin went into her lap, and she watched him carefully.

He'd make it quick. "It looks like a soup, but it is eaten more like a long pasta, like a fettucine or something. Tripe is long and comes in folds." Ezio stuck his fork in the bowl and wound it around a coil of tripe, picking up bits of tomato and herb along the way. He took a bite and couldn't help the happy noise. "Mmph. Perfetto."

Watching him eat was more fun than actually eating, but he was making happy nibbling noises and she wanted to try it too. She followed his lead, eating it carefully. "You weren't kidding, that actually is good."

"I know that some think things like tripe or heart are not edible, but most Italians disagree." Ezio smiled, taking another bite. "Plus, the tomatoes and such are excellent. I saw the frozen foods some enjoy here; I cannot eat things that are not fresh." The very idea was revolting to him.

"I eat more of that stuff than I should. Sometimes I get called in to work weird hours, especially if there's a high profile case, and all that's available is total crap for me." She was tucking in at that point, contentedly eating. It really was delicious, and she made a mental note to bring Annie there.

"I had it explained to me." Ezio wiped his mouth. "I understand convenience, but I am simply not used to it ... none of it tastes like food to me." He chuckled. "The flavor disappears on my tongue with those things. And the tongue can taste so much! It is a pity."
