Melora Hawke is plotting something ([info]smallbutdeadly) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Who: Marian, Melora and Stefan Hawke, Anders and Merrill
What: Revelations and freakouts
Where: Varric's place
Warnings: So much awkward

Melora had been dragging her feet. She'd been dropped off at the school, right next to a portkey, but she didn't take it. Instead, she headed into town for a different portkey. It put her arrival time nearly twenty minutes after she and Stefan had agreed to meet in Malibu. She smiled sheepishly to him when she got there. More time for him to think up something good to say, right?

Their rendezvous point wasn't far from the house. They could see the gate from where they were. Seeing home made the butterflies in her stomach flutter more, and she almost wanted to give Stefan a quick 'Cheers!' and run off to hide. She'd promised she'd come, though, and she would. She had never been a coward. She reached for Stefan's hand to squeeze it.

Stefan had to admit, he was actually a little thankful she'd delayed. It'd given him the time to come up with an explanation that wasn't too silly sounding, even if he was still pretty sure he'd stumble over his words a little. Their parents probably hadn't even thought of having them at this point, so... yeah. Awkwardness would probably ensue.

He squeezed her hand gently, trying not to let his nerves show. "Ready for this?"

"Not at all," she said, shaking her head back and forth vigorously. Cliff-diving, dragon-riding, she didn't get nervous at all. This, though... She wanted to run and hide somewhere. They would figure it out, though, she told herself. No matter what happened, they would at least have eachother.

She held onto Stefan's hand, not letting go.

It was so rare to see her nervous like this. He couldn't actually remember the last time he'd seen it, to be entirely honest... "Worst thing that's going to happen is one of them's going to pass out. And I'm betting right now it'll be Dad."

"Lethallin Jack suggested having an ambulance ready in case one of them has a heart attack." She smiled a little like it was a joke, but it was obvious she was worried. Jack had been exaggerating, she was sure.

She took a deep breath and nodded at Stefan. She wouldn't make him drag her, but she wasn't going to lead.

Stefan had figured she'd have a reaction like that, and to be entirely honest, he couldn't blame her in the slightest. Facing their parents normally could be a strange and awkward experience.

And right now? The house had never really looked more ominous. He took in a deep breath, trying to steel himself (and get rid of that 'run for the hills!' thought), and rang the bell. Hopefully, at least one of them was in...

Even though Esmeralda was usually the one to open the door, Merrill usually trotted down to the foyer when she heard the bell to see who had arrived. It was fun having visitors, especially when her home wasn't a mess! Since Varric and Esmeralda had gone out, it seemed to fall to her to get the door, something she didn't mind at all.

It was strange to ring the bell at your own house. Even stranger when your mother greeted you with a quizzical look.

"Hello!" Merrill said, opening the door further than Esmeralda usually did. "Oh! You're an elf!" she said cheerfully when she saw Melora, which made the girl blush. There weren't many elves here, and Merrill tried to keep track of them. "Are you two new?"

Strange would be the mother of understatements, but it was also something to be expected when it came to things like this. Not that expecting it made it any less awkward.

"Yeah, we're new and... we need to to talk to you about something," it was taking a lot of effort for Stefan not to blurt out something about how young she looked. That could wait for later. "Well, you and... Anders and Hawke. If they're around."

At least it was Merrill answering the door. Esmeralda was usually the one to send away door-to-door salesmen and religious nuts, and the others might have been more suspicious. Merrill just let them right inside, leading them to the sitting room where they could wait for her to find Anders and Hawke.

Even with the tension, it was hard for Melora not to laugh when her brother called their mother by her last name. She knew most people did, and had always chalked it up to one of those 'famous people' things. Still, for her brother to say it just sounded ridiculous.

Melora pulled him over to the couch in the corner and sat close to him. "It looks so different," she whispered to him after Merrill had left. Lois hadn't moved in and made Varric redecorate yet, so the room was still.. well, 'gaudy' was an understatement.

It'd felt ridiculous enough to say it, especially since it technically referred to them as well as her. It'd just been a matter of picking the less awkward and more recognisable name, and nobody really tended to call her Marian.

"It's... certainly a lot more over-the-top," he conceded, half-wondering how any of them could actually put up with it. "Guess it fits Varric a little better right now."

She made a face, but she supposed he was right. At least, it fit the image Varric tried to put out there. She couldn't imagine he really liked it, but sometimes it was hard to tell with Varric, even after knowing him as long as they had.

"So you know what you're going to say?" She tried not to sound like she was fretting, but it was obvious to anyone who knew her as well as her brother did. The fact that she was still clutching his hand was probably a clue, too.

"Roughly," he'd been going through it and changing bits from the moment Merrill had opened the door, despite having thought he had it right before. "I just can't decide if I should just tell them outright who we are or... pad it out by explaining that we're from the future first."

Admittedly, if he started padding it out he'd likely lose track of what he was meant to be saying. Why couldn't things like this just be simple?

Merrill had been vague about who they were meeting, but he had the idea it had more to do with the fact she hadn't tried to dig any deeper, not from intention. Two people, an elf girl and a human boy asking to speak with all of them. It seemed more than a little strange.

He walked in behind Merrill, looking the two over, but staying silent.

"It might make more sense if you mention the future thing first.." She wasn't sure it would make it less of a shock; It was going to be a shock either way, wasn't it? "Maybe.. Oh." Melora quieted when their parents walked in, having to keep herself from greeting them as 'Mom' or 'Dad'.

They looked so young! It was exciting, but scary too. Melora looked over to Stefan expectantly.

Merrill didn't have much information to give to Hawke or Anders. They weren't busy, so she didn't think any of them would mind the interruption to their afternoon. "Would anyone like some tea?"

"Actually, I'd... recommend something a little stronger, for your sake. Considering what we need to tell you," that could've been a lot better phrased, but Stefan could blame it on the shock of seeing them.

That made Hawke arch an eyebrow. They'd heard a lot of weird things since coming to this universe, she rather doubted anything these two could tell them would beat everything out. She'd let him speak before commenting, though.

"We're... from the future of this world. About twenty years or so ahead. A lot of things change, this place gets a bit less gaudy, but... you three stay together," he bit his lip, watching their faces. "I'm going to guess you've not talked about children yet?"

Anders froze, staring at the two. His brain started working too fast to really understand anything. What he was suggesting wasn't even possible, was it?

He hadn't realized he'd stepped back until he was leaning against a wall, which was probably a good thing, because he didn't think his legs would hold out.

He couldn't speak. He just looked at Merrill and Hawke and then back at the two standing in front of them

Melora bit down on her lower lip as Stefan spoke. Oh, that was awful. But it was still better than anything Melora would've said. That would've been more along the lines of 'Hey Mom, it's us.' She looked up at them, holding her breath.

Merrill tilted her head, not quite understanding. They were from the future? That wasn't so strange. And they stayed together.. That was good! A little strange that they knew about it, but certainly nothing they would need a drink to be prepared for. Merrill smiled, confused. "Children? No, not yet."

Melora swallowed, terribly uncomfortable. Anders and Hawke obviously got it. "Vir na len, Mamae," Melora told her quietly.

"Oh, Maker," surprisingly, Hawke was still somewhat managing to put sentences together. Not long ones, but still. It was something. "This... is karma for me mocking Isabela about Jack, isn't it? Knew I shouldn't have..."

Sensing Melora's discomfort, Stefan lightly squeezed her hand. Things weren't going too badly... well, it could've been a lot worse. "I'm Stefan, she's Melora. And she's the older one, believe it or not."

Anders leaned heavily against the wall, looking at the two. Children wasn't something that had even gone by his mind in passing, and now they were standing there.

This wasn't even possible. "This really isn't funny."

Melora winced a little. "I.. I'm sorry, we weren't trying to," Yeah, this was not going well. She should probably keep letting Stefan talk. She looked over at her brother, worried. "Yup, it's gonna be Dad," she said quietly. Anders was looking a little unsteady, like he could pass out any minute.

Merrill's eyes widened. That was a lot of information at once. They had children together, and one of them was speaking Elvish to her. "You're.. I'm going to sit down," she announced, grabbing a nearby chair and sinking into it. Looking at the two--particularly Melora--raised more questions than they answered.

Stefan sighed, shaking his head. They probably should've seen his reaction coming... "This isn't meant to be funny, it isn't a joke. I think we'd think of something a bit more creative than 'we're your children from the future', if it was."

If Anders wasn't the first of them to pass out, it was becoming pretty likely that it'd be Hawke. Them, parents? Was this some kind of cosmic joke? Especially since Melora was obviously an elf... "How did we even... I mean, yes, maybe at some point, but... you're..."

Anders shook his head. The woman was an elf. She could be Merrill's, but not his. None of it made any sense. "I. You can't. This doesn't make sense." Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe they had meant Hawke, and Merrill and someone who wasn't Anders. He wasn't father material.

Melora looked back to Stefan, trying not to panic. She hadn't been prepared for this reaction. Nobody could even get a sentence out. She wasn't ready to explain the biology behind why she was an elf, and she was pretty sure that was on all of their minds. She didn't think of Alim as a father.. She didn't think of him at all, actually. When people asked, she usually stubbornly insisted that Anders was her father, no matter how much they argued about genetics. Anders was her father. How was she supposed to explain that to them, though?

Melora pulled on Stefan's sleeve and spoke to him in hurried Elvish. "Maybe we should go.. Give them time to let it sink in."

Merrill frowned. "Wait," she said, speaking in English. "Don't leave. We'll figure this out.." She turned to glance over to Hawke and Anders. "Won't we?"

"Give it a little longer, Lora," was his response to that, and in Elvish too - it was almost a comfort thing, sometimes. If they asked, Stefan was more than willing to explain how things had resulted in Melora being in elf. He wouldn't name names, because they could all do without even more awkwardness in their lives, at least at this early stage.

Hawke, having finally managed to remind herself that breathing is good and vital to proper brain function, managed a nod. "More impossible things have happened than this... come on, we've fought dragons and insane Templars. Children shouldn't really make us... go like this."

Anders looked at Merrill and Hawke. Maybe if they were there it would be okay. "Yeah. What they said. We can work this out." He wasn't really sure if that was true, but he'd always followed Hawke before and she'd never lead him wrong.

Merrill nodded to Anders and Hawke before taking a breath. She smiled at the two kids, trying not to start panicking again. Melora and Stefan seemed just as nervous as their parents, and it wouldn't help anyone to keep making it worse. She had to smile when Stefan reassured his sister, though. It seemed he'd inherited Hawke's cool under pressure.

Merrill reached out and put a hand on Melora's free hand. "It'll be all right," she told her. She was still speaking in English, for Anders and Hawke's sake. Things were complicated enough without them missing out on half the conversation.

Melora forced a small smile at Merrill, then glanced up at Anders. Maybe if he would be all right, they all would.

This was really one of those situations where Stefan was very thankful for Merrill. Sure, she sometimes missed things in the bigger picture, but she always seemed to have a way to convince Hawke and Anders. "If it'd make it any easier, we can avoid calling you our parents until it's sunk in a bit better..."

Even if it'd be weird for him and Melora, it'd be worth it if it kept things from going any more awkward.

Anders smiled. "It's not like we would just forget if you didn't say it. Don't worry about us. Maybe we should just settle you two in and worry about the details later." He didn't really want to worry about the details ever. That would be easier, but he knew later they would have to think about it.

Merrill looked back at Anders and smiled warmly to him. "That sounds like a good idea." She looked back at the kids. "I sort of like being called Mamae," she told them. Was that strange? It meant she was passing her culture onto the next generation.. Even if that generation didn't seem terribly far removed from them, yet.

Melora looked up at her dad hopefully. She'd always been a Daddy's Girl; tomboy, wanting to be a healer for the underprivileged, like him. Maybe she was trying to compensate for having a different father, but his approval meant the world to her.

It didn't seem strange to Hawke. To her, it'd always seemed like part of being Dalish was the desire to just keep their culture going. "As long as you don't call us anything strange, I guess I'm fine with it."

Try as he might, Stefan couldn't fight the urge to roll his eyes. Honestly, what did she take them for? "Don't worry. We didn't listen to Isabela when she started telling us to call you interesting things..."

"As long as no one calls me Mr. Hawke we're good," he said laughing just a little. Melora was looking intently at him and it freaked him out a bit, not that he showed it. He wanted to not have to stand here and be strong and calm for these kids, but he had to. If he freaked out they would be upset and it would all be not good.

Merrill giggled at Anders' joke. That did sound very silly. It wasn't that she wasn't serious enough to consider taking one of their last names.. Just.. Hawke was Hawke. Not her or Anders.

Melora smiled too, looking back at Stefan. She was glad he had made her stay, even if things were still a little strange.

Hawke couldn't help but laugh. "Anyone ever calls you Mr Hawke, I'm probably going to die laughing. No offence, but... just doesn't fit you." Anders was Anders, that was really it. No extra parts needed.

Things were probably going to be strange for a while, at least in Stefan's opinion, but this was a good start. Mostly. "If someone calls you that now, don't blame us. It'll just be a weird, vortex-induced coincidence."

Anders smiled. At least the tension was eased a bit. "So, uh, what do we need to settle you two in? School, or job? You probably will live here with us, right?" He didn't know how old they were or what would make them comfortable. He didn't know how they were supposed to handle this.

Melora let go of Stefan's hand and shifted on the couch to get more comfortable, folding her legs up under her. "We live here," she said, nodding. "We graduated last year." Melora had stayed at Taunton a few extra years until Stefan graduated. She looked too young for people to take her seriously in the working world, and besides, she was still learning useful stuff in their magic classes.

"Um. We sometimes help you at the clinic," she said, smiling nervously. It was more of an unpaid internship for an unpaid position, but they liked it. Not very business savvy, these two.

"We're both mages, so it made sense for us to help you... you know, when things get busier, or you need to rest," Stefan added. "And don't worry, you taught us pretty well, so... we mostly know what to do."

In other words, they weren't prone to messing things up or making things explode, and hadn't been for quite some time. Always useful skills to have when it came to medical stuff.

Merrill smiled. "You're both healers? That's good." Merrill didn't mind being the odd one out. The more healers they had around the house, the safer they were in case anyone fell off a banister.

Melora knew from experience that the least embarrassing thing to do when Merrill caught herself like that was to just pretend nothing had happened. She smiled at her dad. "So... Dr. Hawke then?" She grinned. Not as bad as Mr. Hawke! At least he got the 'doctor' in there!

Melora giggled. "Okay. Dr. Anders when we're at work." That was usually what they called him at the clinic, anyway. Of course, the nurses had known about their relationship, and didn't mind if they accidentally called him Dad.

Merrill smiled, sitting down on the arm of the couch and ruffling Stefan's hair. She had a good feeling that this would work.
