Who: Morrigan and the Grey Warden
What: ARGH, feelings.
Warnings: Just blood and gore. No sexings, I swear.

Morrigan's insistence that she didn't have feelings made it difficult for her to actually process said mythical feelings in a stable, mature way. Any attempt to logically explain her actions at this point was idiotic, in her opinion. She was killing demons. It was what she had done in Fereldan. She had wiped out a nest of lesser demons in Cornwall, pulling them out and taking them on one at a time. It took hours, but that was what she needed. Grueling, mindless work to clear her head.

Once Cornwall was clear, she'd sought out something more difficult. Petit had sent her after feral weres, the sort that had lost all humanity and were dangerous month-round. Of course, being the full moon, they were stronger. And they hunted in packs. Morrigan hadn't been ready for all of them, and they'd taken her down. She'd tried keeping herself healed, but there was only so much she could do. Her body was lying in the bushes, bleeding and missing several large chunks of skin where she'd been bit.

Try as he might, Alim hadn't been able to give up possession of the ring that she'd given him. Whilst the edges were worn slightly, from months of him fiddling with it, the shifting images in the grain were still there - animals, human shapes, nothing he could really discern.

It was the emotions that mattered in this case. He'd been feeling her rage for so long, and now, just... was that pain? Grabbing his staff from where it lay, and focusing on the pulses of emotion, he followed them as best he could. If Morrigan was in danger, he couldn't let her be... when the pulses grew strongest, almost no pause in-between each one, he swallowed and dared to take a chance.

"Morrigan?" he kept low, unwilling to attract too much attention. If whatever it was could hurt Morrigan, he knew that he'd likely be in trouble too if it found him. "If you're here, give me some sign... your ring best not've led me wrong."

Lying still and quiet had been what made the weres leave. They preferred live prey, and playing dead took all the fun out of it. Of course, she wouldn't be 'playing' much longer. She had taken a lot of damage, and was bleeding out. She tried to gather enough magic to heal herself, but couldn't do it.

She could barely hear the calls. Even as the Warden grew closer, the sound seemed more distant. She tried to speak, but everything grew dark. The pulses on the ring starting growing weaker, then stopped all together as the ring became cold to the touch.

He swore under his breath when the ring suddenly... stopped, it seemed. The images fading away along with the warmth. Biting his lip, he raised his staff, a glowing light appearing on the tip.

When it illuminated her body, his heart tightened in his chest. He was by her side in a moment, checking her vitals. He swallowed hard when he found nothing, before trying to weave the magic to revive her - it'd been a long time since he'd last had cause for this, but he had to do it.

She might not be his anymore, but he wasn't going to let this world take Morrigan from him.

Her wounds healed over and gasped as her breath returned to her. Her eyes narrowed almost as soon as she opened them. "Warden," she said, coughing once. She raised a hand, trying to cast an offensive spell at him, but the magic flickered in useless static around her fingers. She cursed in a language Alim had never heard.

In lieu of magic, she pulled back her hand and smacked him, dragging her fingernails across his face and cutting into his cheek. If he had been expecting gratitude from Morrigan, he was barking up the wrong tree.

Whilst that stung, Alim had hardly expected anything less from her. He knew Morrigan better than to assume she'd be grateful. In all the time he'd known her, she'd only thanked him the once, and even then it hadn't exactly been the most sincere thing he'd ever heard.

"You need to be more careful, full of rage or not," he shifted his hands away from her, not wanting to give her an excuse to break bones. Or worse. "You're lucky I always kept the ring."

The throbbing in her head and ringing in her ears didn't quite drown out what Alim had said, but she preferred to give the appearance that it had. She did not need to be reminded how stupid her actions were; that was quite evident. She didn't answer him, sitting up slowly instead.

She didn't move to attack him again. Even her initial attack hadn't seemed that angry, per se, more a necessary response to the situation. He deserved that much. Her rage had dampened considerably; dying would do that to a girl. "Ever the hero," she sneered.

He hadn't expected much of a response either way. Although, he had expected she'd try and slap him at least more than once... just went to show that things weren't all that predictable when it came to her, if anything.

"I'm a Warden, being a hero is almost my job," he pointed out. "You saved my life enough times. It's only fair that I sometimes save yours in return, right?"

"You don't have to do that here," she remarked quietly. Obviously he did, though. As much as she cared for Brother, resurrection was not something he could do. She started to stand, but wobbled and fell back, feeling woozy. Dying was harder here than it had been in Fereldan.

"Things are different here."

That may've been, but you couldn't exactly take the Warden part out of Alim after so long. He'd spent two years fighting the Archdemon, another year in Vigil's Keep and yet another year seeking out Morrigan and his child... it was really that last part that made him be here, naturally.

Even if he was starting to think that this Morrigan wasn't one who performed the ritual.

"That won't stop me wanting to help you," he said. "The world through the Eluvian probably wouldn't have been like Ferelden either, but I went through with you nonetheless."

She hadn't been looking at him, looking instead at her hands, or the blood on the ground, or anything else. She was too conflicted, yet her convictions remained. Zevran had been a mistake, and she would not make another one. She gave a slight shake of her head when he mentioned the Eluvian. She didn't know what he was talking about, but she wouldn't admit that.

"As Zevran was so kind to relay, there is someone else here. What we did together is of no consequence anymore." It sounded a bit forced.

"I wish you and your man the best, honestly," as long as whoever this man was made Morrigan as close to happy as possible, Alim wouldn't intervene. He knew better than to get on her bad side.

There was a pause, and he sighed. This was quickly becoming awkward. "Am I honestly so horrible to look at, Morrigan? Or do you fear I'll turn into a something terrible and cause you to do something you'll regret?"

She would have preferred avoiding this entire conversation. As angry as she had been with Zevran, at least he had saved her having to discuss it with Alim. That had been the hope, at least. Talking about those feelings she didn't have was more insufferable than fighting the weres. He wished her the best of luck? She certainly wouldn't have done the same, in his shoes. She would've set the bitch on fire.

She smirked a bit at that. "'Something terrible'? An abomination, perhaps?" Her tone was nearly playful. As though these were things Morrigan worried about. She chanced a sideways glance at him, then. "Alim, you know I would rather chew my own arm off than talk about these things. That much hasn't changed."

He couldn't help a slight smile at the abomination comment. Somehow, the thought of Morrigan being even remotely scared of one of those was just a tiny bit too amusing.

"When you don't talk about them, you tend to throw yourself into danger or disappear off the face of the world," the blood that still stained the ground near them was rather proof of the former. "The most we ever talked about feelings was before we fought the Archdemon, and then you just vanished away..."

"Your point?" It worked well enough, most of the time. The first time she'd struggled with the idea that she might have cared for Brother, she'd burned her house down and vanished for several weeks. Brother seemed to handle her disappearances remarkably well, though they had been far less frequent, lately. She had grown more comfortable with him, and didn't need to run.

"'What would have happened if you hadn't been here?' I probably would have spent a quiet evening at home." He'd saved her life, granted, but her life wouldn't have needed saving if not for him.

She had a much better point than him, it had to be admitted. Damn her and her ability to blow holes in his reasoning.

"Whatever force drags us here must've just felt like throwing a spanner in the works by bringing me here... it certainly put a stopper to my plans, to say nothing of yours," he knew better than to assume when it came to her. Assuming tended to lead to waking up on fire or slightly frozen. "The you I left behind was... going to take me to see the child that resulted from your ritual."

She was quiet for several moments, prepared to ignore the subject entirely. If he had actually gone to the trouble of finding her, though, in an attempt to meet it, he probably wouldn't take kindly to her refusing to acknowledge the topic. "There was no child," she said finally. Her tone was low and her jaw clenched briefly.

It probably wasn't close to the amount of information Alim was fishing for, but any creature with a survival instinct could tell that it would be very unhealthy to provoke Morrigan right now. Caution was needed.

He knew to take that as a sign to avoid pressing the subject further. Best not to give her an excuse to immolate him on the spot. He liked not being on fire, an awful lot actually.

"Child or not, we all survived the Archdemon thanks to you," he'd leave the subject at that. If she ever wanted to tell him anything, he'd let her do it of her own free will - at least then there'd be far less physical pain involved. "That aside... would you like me to help you back to your home, or is that me playing the hero too much?"

The change in her tone was abrupt, from the cold calm of a cobra about to strike to the less-dangerous irritated mocking that served as Morrigan's conversational tone. "Yes. The Blight is ended and the mighty Grey Warden lives. Once again the day is saved." She was grateful he didn't question her further. She had no doubt the topic would come up again, probably when he was out of her attack range.

"It would be a waste of breath to tell you to stop playing the hero, Alim." She rolled her eyes. "But I'm not sure any of us are ready for you to meet Brother."

He had to mentally slap himself to keep from commenting on the man's name. That had to get a bit confusing and awkward at times... getting her back to not wanting to kill him once was challenge enough, though, which gave him all the more reason to avoid that subject.

"That means you're likely stuck with me until you're feeling less... fuzzy," he paused, shaking his head slightly. Morrigan and fuzzy didn't go together. "Well, maybe not fuzzy, but... when you're having less trouble getting up?"

Morrigan smirked at his choice of descriptors. As useful as it was to play the weakling, at times, she and Alim were long past that game. "I believe I'm quite capable of balancing now," she said, pulling herself upright. "An escort out of these woods wouldn't be unwelcome, however." The weres had been gone for some time, but that didn't mean they wouldn't return.

Alim chose to take the smirking as a sort-of good sign, before picking up his staff and rising to his feet. "Of course. Two mages are harder to take down than one... just because the beasts aren't making themselves known doesn't mean they aren't here."

As it was, being savaged by some creature wasn't high on his list of priorities. He'd gotten enough of that from Darkspawn before he ended up here.

"They weren't exactly the most subtle creatures," Morrigan commented, a brow raised. She doubted very much that they were hiding in the bushes, watching them. "Still, they were fast. We would have some warning, but not much."

She retrieved her staff and began to walk the way she came.

"Even the most unsubtle things can surprise you," Alim shrugged, casting a brief glance behind them just in case. "We'd best move quickly either way. They might be gone, but there could be scavengers coming to see what their prey was."

She tilted her head, raising a brow in his direction as he spoke of surprises. "We are still talking about the weres, aren't we?"

She nodded. "We move, then." A full-out run would be difficult to manage, but she would try to match the Warden's pace.

"If there's even one amongst them that's got at least half a mind left, there could still be surprises... or maybe I'm vastly overestimating them," to be entirely fair, the only weres he'd really encountered had been the ones that the Dalish had been fighting.

Knowing that running likely wouldn't be possible for her for a while longer, he didn't set too strenuous a pace, just enough for them to likely keep ahead of any approaching nasties.

Morrigan smirked. She had half-suspected he was talking about her. Apparently not. She shrugged. "We can be careful, then. If it will make you feel better."

She kept up with Alim, not complaining of any strain. It would be nice to get home.

"Or I could be underestimating you," he admitted. It'd been a long time since he'd seen Morrigan fight, but he could at least vaguely remember her jamming her staff into a high dragon's eye once... or maybe that was just one of his interesting dreams that happened when things knocked him out. "How many of them did you manage to take down?"

He was allowed to be curious, wasn't he?

"Only three of these," she said with a shrug. "A few dozen of the others. It was a nest; I cleared it. I fear I may have robbed my friend Bela of her go-to punching bag." Yes, Morrigan had a friend.

"These hunt in packs. I don't think their territory stretches much further than this, though." The woods were starting to thin.

Morrigan with a friend? By the Maker, did miracles never cease in this world?

"Demons repopulate quickly, and the weres may be weaker when the moon is waning... either way, she'll have her punching bag back eventually," if there was one thing Alim's education in the Circle had provided, it was little bits of information like that. "You're amazing to have taken three down on a night like tonight, even if it didn't end too well."

Morrigan rolled her eyes upon being complimented. "Didn't I make it clear you weren't going to talk your way into my bed, Warden?" She didn't need pointless praise from her former companion. "You haven't even seen them."

"You made it very clear. I was just complimenting, nothing more," Alim knew she didn't like them at the best of times, but still... "Unless weres are dramatically different between here and Thedas, I have a decent enough idea of what they're like."

To be honest, with her saying that, he half-expected her to spin some tale about them being twenty feet tall with eyes that shot fire... or maybe that was more a Flemeth thing to do.

"There's no need for that," she said, waving her hand. "What if they'd been as ferocious as kittens? Taking out three certainly wouldn't have been impressive. So... shush." They had, of course, been stronger than that, and more of a fight than she could handle. Still, Alim didn't know that, so his compliments were meaningless.

He knew enough from the state they'd left her in, in his opinion. "But kittens don't gouge out chunks of skin or leave you a bleeding mess," he pointed out. "If they do, someone should really warn the Grey Wardens back in Ferelden before Ser Pounce-a-Lot exterminates the lot of them."

That earned a smirk. She supposed there was some evidence, so she wouldn't argue further. "Still, I don't require praise from you." She wasn't an easy woman to compliment.

"I think I know my way back from here," she said as they reached a clearing.

And without there being any sign of danger, he was more than happy to accept that. He gave a slight bow, unable to resist the urge.

"Take care, Morrigan," he said. "Maybe next time we run into each other, there'll be less blood and death involved."

She gave a small nod. "Perhaps. Stranger things have happened, I suppose." It would take a while for things to stabilize, she thought. Maybe one day, she and Alim could be around eachother without wondering what might have been. Perhaps they could be... friends.

"Thank you, Warden," she said just before touching the portkey and disappearing. She had no desire to see his response to that small gesture.

When she arrived home, she greeted Brother with a smile. Through the ring, Alim would note a strong wave of relief, and even some happiness.
