Who: Mary and Mephisto.
What: Friends reuniting!
When: Thursday evening.
Where: Mary's apartment.
Warnings: No idea! TBA.



The apartment was the exact same one she'd had before. The things in it were the same as well, albeit covered with approximately six months worth of dust and grime. She hadn't yet mustered up the courage to look inside the fridge, and she didn't know when she'd be able to. She hadn't been kidding; cleaning really did help her clear her head and sort out her issues. But she had, however, downplayed how much she was looking forward to seeing Mephisto. She'd always had a silly little crush on the demon, something she'd (hopefully) kept secret even from him. But he was her friend, most importantly of all, and she was glad to see he was still around.

While she waited for him to arrive, she was tackling the cleaning of the apartment room by room. The living room was the place closest to the door without being the kitchen, and so she put on some music and started to dust. She was singing along to the soundtrack of the Lion King and unhooking the drapes from the curtain rod when she heard a knock on the door.

Mephisto had been spending most of his time assessing the damage done by his rather reckless angel counterpart when he got a buzz on his phone that he hadn't had for ages -- one that he'd never thought he'd feel again. He'd mourned the disappearance of Mary. While most would have attributed that sadness to the angelic end of the spectrum, it certainly wasn't. Mephisto had felt a deep hole carved into his heart at his loss of her, and with her return, he felt what little heart he had soar at the prospect of seeing her.

Not that what she saw would show any bit of it. The stony-faced demon stood at the door, as deadpan and dark as ever. But, for what it was worth, Mephisto remembered to bring a housewarming gift. It was a small gift basket of cleaning supplies, and a bouquet of lilies and daffodils. He could hear the music inside, and the faint footsteps as they approached the door, and once she'd opened it, he held out the bouquet first.

"You were severely missed, my dear Mary," He said, his voice the same, deep, chilling thing it had always been.

When she opened the door, she saw the flowers first, but she couldn't help but ignore them. Instead of taking the bouquet, she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly. His voice never bothered her. That was just the voice of her dearest friend talking.

"I missed you too, so much," she murmured, her voice muffled in his shoulder. She sniffled hard, wiping her eyes against his jacket. A few moments later she was finally able to regain her composure enough to lean back and take the flowers. "They're beautiful. I'll put them in water. Come in." She grabbed the remote to turn the music off. Hakuna Matata didn't seem like a very Meph song.

With a stiff, but sincere embrace in return, Mephisto murmured, "I hate that you were left without your friends for so long. I told the alchemist that if I could rend a hole in the fabric of reality to snatch you back from whatever world you'd gone to, I would have."

If Meph ever decided to make a cover of Hakuna Matata, it'd wind up with the warthog and the meerkat being gnawed on by their suddenly adult lion friend. He stepped in and closed the door behind him, setting down the basket, wrinkling his nose at the scent of rot coming from a vaguely kitchen-ish direction. "I'll just... dispose of the leftovers," he muttered, waving his hand vaguely at the refrigerator. Heaven only knew where he'd sent the refuse. Well, heaven and in a few weeks, Asmodeus.

Settling against the counter, he crossed his arms over his chest, sighing a little. "I feel as if I owe you an apology," he huffed, shaking his head. "I no longer have wings. Those stayed with Raziel, who I'm sure is in Uruk now with Astarte."

"You would?" She bit her lip and ducked her head, tucking her hair behind her ears. "You know I'd do the same for you if I had any powers beyond making fudge bars." The basket of cleaning products was taken gladly, and she started immediately to attack the grime in the kitchen.

When he waved his hand at the fridge, she beamed brightly, clapping her hands giddily. "Thank you so much, that was going to take forever, and the smell without opening the door was bad enough."

She pulled on a pair of rubber gloves and sprayed some cleaner on the counters that weren't near him. His statement about her wings made her smile to herself. "Oh, that's fine. You still have hair, maybe you'll let me brush that sometimes?" Her tone was light and teasing, and she hoped he knew that she didn't care if he had wings or not.

He knew well enough - he simply felt like apologizing that he wasn't the being she'd grown to know, at least by half. Mephisto slipped away from the counter for her benefit and summoned a half-lemon to take care of the rotting smell that still lingered in the fridge. "Perhaps I may," he said with the faintest of smiles. "I should let you know that Satan has left this reality. There is a new power in that throne."

"Oh?" She paused cleaning, using her wrist to wipe a bead of sweat from her forehead. "I'm sure all of that will work out. Someone will step up as a temporary leader, I'm sure. The two sides need to have balance, I think, but I'm hardly an authority." She bit her lip to keep herself from talking and saying anything more stupid than she already had.

"Oh, there's already a new king," Mephisto said with a dark chuckle. "After I was taken out, piece by bloody piece, my power fell to that Wartooth boy who you likely have seen posting. And when Satan was taken away, what was left of me felt a renewed desire to exist. The idiot Asmodey should have done away with me instead of simply extracting and subduing what he could of me, if he didn't truly wish me to return. But well. That's not how things turned out." He settled his hands on her shoulders. "You shouldn't work so gruelingly, Mary," the terror-inducing tone subdued when he spoke in a near-whisper, "You'll tire yourself unnecessarily."

"Oh, I know him, he's sweet." She was probably one of the few people in the world who would use that word to describe Teja, but she thought that of almost everyone. She'd even thought Asmodey had his funny moments. But Mephisto's hands on her shoulders made her breath quicken and her heart skip two beats. "But - but it's messy, I have to tidy things." When he whispered, his voice made her skin flush.

"Tidy away," he said in an amused tone, "but don't work your fingers to the bone. Here," he said with a murmur, taking one of her hands and removing the glove, before running his own hand over her knuckles. While he held her hand in his, he also summoned up a large carafe of ice water, and some small pita finger-sandwiches for her.

"I would not be able to forgive myself if you were not well looked after in my presence," he scolded gently as his rough fingertips worked at the muscles in her hand, careful of his sharp claws.

"Well, unless you can magically clean everything," she teased. "And even if you could, I wouldn't want you to. It's my apartment, I can do it myself." When he held her hand she looked down at his fingers. The nails were long and looked sharp enough to kill someone, but he was careful with how he touched her. It was sweet, and did nothing to stop her heart from beating so quickly. The food lay untouched while he massaged her gently. It was likely the sweetness he was showing her, but she couldn't stop herself from saying something stupid. "I've always had a little bit of a crush on you, you know," she blurted.

Mephisto gave another ghost of a smile at her confession, and moved his hand over hers fully once more. "Has anyone ever told you that you have positively the worst taste in men, Mary Anne?" He feigned eye contact momentarily as he continued, "I'd be remiss if I were not to tell you that those feelings have been, for the most part, rather mutual. But let's not consider them, hm? You have only just arrived again."

That said, he slipped away and went to lean against the counter on the other side of the kitchen from where she was working. "I never did get to thank you for the cookies you provided for me when I became human."

"No, people don't usually comment on my taste in men. And I don't think I do, nobody's beat me or hurt me or even spoken sharply to me out of the men I've dated." She looked at his eyes. Some people would have found the pure whiteness of them to be unnerving, but Mary thought they were beautiful. "I - what?" She couldn't help but laugh, a release of adrenaline upon hearing something so utterly fantastic and confusing and perfect.

Whimpering faintly when he moved away, she looked at him and shook her head. "You never need to thank me, Mephisto. I was happy to do it. Can you eat still? Or did your acidity come back?" She really hoped it hadn't, and she daydreamed about kissing him as she put her rubber glove back on as she resumed cleaning.

"It returned," Mephisto said with a heavy sigh, indicating that if he could roll his eyes, he certainly would have, "but I still remember how to make an amulet which will act as a neutralizer, should I ever need one. Now that you're back, I believe it's a necessity. Who wouldn't make an effort for your baking?" He grinned at the memory of the cookie he'd had, and would likely remember its taste long, long after all that currently was in the world was nothing but dust and ruin. "And I do need to thank you. It was the first truly delightful human experience I'd had."

"Oh, thank goodness, you can make it go away." She bit her lip, excited for the eventuality of that particular boundary going away and the possibilities that would hold for her. Turning to look at him, she wished for a moment that he could see her. Normally, she was at peace with his blindness, but she wanted him to see how happy he made her. Smiling to herself, she turned and resumed polishing the chrome faucet on the sink. "Just think, there's a lot of flavors you haven't tried yet. The kind you had might not even be your favorite."

"I found chocolate to be very rich," Mephisto pointed out, hearing the slight lilt her tone had taken on, "too rich, in some cases. But I'm partial to hazelnut and honey." He listened to her work and summoned up some sewing, so he could give his hands something to do. "You weren't here when I baked a cake on my own. I remember knowing you would have been proud of such an accomplishment, and that I wished you had been here to share with me."

"I wish I'd been here too! Oh, hazelnut and honey sounds fantastic. Did you try hazelnut and coffee?" She saw him sewing and chuckled to herself, moving to kneel and clean out the counter underneath the sink. It also helped her to focus on not thinking about kissing him. "What kind did you make? Were you lonely?" She couldn't help but worry about him - it was in her nature to worry about everyone, and he was someone special to her.

"Oh, just a plain yellow cake, I don't trust myself with fancy baking," joked Mephisto, "If I wanted to set something on fire, I've got a hundred better ways of doing it than via burnt cake. I... was, yes. As much as a soul can be when he is constantly in checkmate with another part of himself. I was quite mad, then." Mephisto tilted his head with a furrow of his brow, "It's likely that I'm still mad. But at least I know that I'm the only one in my mind now." He bowed his head over the leather and needle.

"You will never have to endure loneliness, I feel," the demon mentioned offhandedly, "with how kind you are, your gallons of friends," he shook his head, "you'd have a harder time getting time alone, I feel."

"Oh, but yellow cake is wonderful too. Yellow cake and chocolate frosting, and then if you pour sweetened condensed milk on top? I've got plans for your mouth when it stops being filled with acid, you know." She grinned lopsidedly, not realizing what she said could be construed as innuendo. "You're not mad. And you won't have to be lonely either. You have me, you know. If you feel lonely, let me know. I'll take care of you. I worry about you."

"You only say that due to your fondness for me," Mephisto said with a shake of his head, "And the way my return was received yesterday gave me a fairly good idea that I wasn't particularly welcomed back. I know you are friends with the angels, and there is no reason I would usurp your time from them, including my own loneliness." He tutted as the needle pricked his finger, barely even feeling it.

"I am quite used to being alone, and while you may find that as tragic, I myself find it a comfort. If I surround myself with people, they wind up a sort of people I'd rather dispose of in imaginative, gruesome ways than keep around."

She saw the needle sink into his finger, saw him pull his finger away. Her gloves came off immediately, and she moved over to look at him. "I'm friends with a number of angels, sure, but I'm friends with you." She held his finger up to her mouth, sucking lightly to stop the blood. She didn't want him to have to be alone so often. Maybe if he found the right people, he wouldn't want to hurt them.

Mephisto hissed once she brought her fingertip up to her lips and pulled it away quickly, before she could get even a drop of blood in her mouth, not wanting to cause her any harm. He shook his head and scolded, keeping his voice to merely a whisper, "Mary, do not ever do that again. Never be so reckless. I know you care, but care less, for pity's sake, I do not wish you any harm."

"Just a little bit wouldn't have hurt me," she murmured. She looked down at her feet, biting her lip to keep from making any sounds. He wouldn't be able to see her face fall, to see any upset registering on her face. "I don't think I could care less, Mephisto. I don't know how to stop caring about you. And even if I could, I wouldn't." Her voice sounded as stern as it ever had, with a faint echo of hurt.

"By the light, my dear girl, you very well could have," his tone suddenly turned less sharp when he heard how upset she was. "Just one drop of my blood could easily burn your mouth straight up." He was far more upset for her sake than his own, and it showed. He scowled, however, and tried to regain what composure he had lost with the shock and surprise of potentially hurting the one person he knew would never deserve it. "I... I apologize," he said through grit teeth, though it was no less sincere, "you did not warrant my anger. It was not directed at you, but my... own inability to keep from harming you, even when you show the slightest amount of worry. I... should go."

She waited until his mouth was closed, until there was no way for his acid tongue to touch her, to harm her. Tiptoeing up, she pressed her lips to his in a dry, sweet kiss. Eventually she leaned back down, resting her head against his chest. "Please don't. Can we work on making that amulet for you instead? So this won't happen?" She chuckled and wiped her damp eyes.

That made him grow stark still momentarily, and when she pulled away, his brow knit in upset. "If I didn't know you as well as I do, I would assume you had a death wish," he muttered, before concentrating, calling mentally to the amulet he had already made. Finding it, unsurprisingly, in Uruk, he summoned it into one hand and held it out to her, the leather cord still on its metal loop. "Why make another when I can simply borrow the first from a being who doesn't need it?" His lips tilted into a brief smile before he bowed down to allow her to reach his neck more easily. "Could you please?"
