WHO: Gabriel and Bobby
WHAT: Lore and ritual help
WHERE: Bobby's place
WARNINGS: Probably not, will update if necessary

It took Gabe a few portkeys, but eventually he found the back alley in New York that led to the middle of nowhere. He landed in front of a weathered house, with a long porch. He was still in his scrubs, but it didn't matter.

He came up to the door, hearing a dog bark. It felt stupid to knock - most of the time he just walked through doors - but this was important. "Hello?" Gabe called, hoping Singer was here.

Thatcher was at the door, tail going like a dynamo, usually she actually opened the screen herself, but she didn't today, and it didn't take Bobby long to pad over from the kitchen, drying his hands on a dishtowel, "Gabriel, right?" He said, bumping the screen door open, "C'mon inside."

"Yeah. Hey there!" The last was to the dog. Gabe leaned down to pet it, smiling at its crazily wagging tail. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Singer. I'm hoping you can help me out."

His brow arched, slinging the dishtowel onto the kitchen table, folding his arms, "Alright, with what? Because I have to say, celestials asking me for help is a new one."

Thatcher, for her part, just reveled in the attention, chuffing a lone, quiet, bark before winding herself around Gabriel's legs for a moment.

Gabe shrugged. "Well, your library, then, if not you." The man didn't really need to get shirty. "None of my family who are here have ever gone through the ritual I need to remember. And shit you pick up two eons ago in a casual comment doesn't really stick in your brain for a super long time."

"Yeah, I imagine not." He said, scratching the back of his neck, "What is it you're looking for? I can at least point you in the right direction, if I don't know where it is." He said, leading the way down the hall to the library.

He could be straight up about it. "I want to bond with a human," Gabe said simply. "Like, the immortality type of bonding, where you give up a piece of your soul bonding. With two angels, it's easy, we're changeable, but you humans need your entire souls. For her to give up a piece of hers would turn her into an abomination and I'm not interested in that."

He scratched the back of his neck again, making a beeline for a bookcase on the west wall, "If youd'a asked me a year ago, I would've told you it ain't possible. But, well, more things on heaven and earth, so the saying goes."

Gabe nodded. "It's obviously possible for two of us." He indicated himself. "But I just have to explore all the avenues, you know?" He shifted, debating being really honest, and deciding to go with it. This man knew Lilo. "Her only other option is being a vampire, and I told her she'd have to fuckin' neutralize me before I let her do that. I love her."

"Vampirism is too risky." He said, already tugging down a few books, marking their places with notecards, "Too many variables to make it viable." He arched a brow over at Gabriel then, "And if we're talking about the girl I think we're talking about, she knows it."

"Probably, but she's also crazy enough to do it if she has no other choice." Gabe looked grim. "I don't know you too well, but if you're the type to give me shit about dragging her into being immortal, you can get it out of your system now." He shook his head.

He shrugged, leaving the stack of books he'd already collected on one corner of the work desk, "She's an adult, and a smart one, she knows what she's getting into."

Which was Bobby-speak for 'not going to lecture you'.

Gabe appreciated that. "I'd love to see the person try to keep her off the course she picks." He stood back, feeling faintly awkward. "Is there anything I can do to help? Or is it better if I stay outta your way? I just need any kind of information on the bonding itself. Maybe I can find a loophole."

There was a huff that while it was dry it was definitely amused, "Anybody tells her she can't do something is in for a world of hurt."

He handed over two of the books off the stack, "Start looking. Most of them have a workable index, some of them don't. If there's nothing in this batch I'll at least know where to look next."

Gabe nodded, bowing his head to the books and getting to looking. "You have some collection here," he commented after a while. "Have you collected all this, or was part of it willed to you or something?"

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby
2011-03-25 05:29 am UTC (link)
"Most of 'em were here when I got here, collection's a little better than what I had at home, and I collected most of that one on my own." He shrugged, sitting back in his chair, already paging through one of the books, checking for the index first, "Though most of that was hard earned."

Gabe nodded. "It's really impressive, honestly." He flipped through one, setting it aside - he could read faster than most mortals, obviously. "I heard about your library from Ariel - he said you probably had what I needed, since the members of my family who could help me aren't here."

"God was here, she said it rivaled the library at Vatican City." He shrugged, leafing through the book he had in hand, "Not a claim I was going to make, but I ain't going to argue with the lady."

"I gotta know what She was like." Gabe chuckled faintly. "I've only ever seen Father as ... well, that. His favorite earth form is an elderly black man with a bright smile. But I mean, at least for a good long while, Father was about as O.T. as some of you guys think he was." He could tell stories, but he wasn't sure that this guy wouldn't know most of them already.

"Sweet." He said with a nod, "Never actually met Her in person, just on the boards, kinda by accident." A shrug, "Still didn't seem like a good idea to ask Her how She knew, if She'd never been here."

There was something that was almost a smile as Thatcher butted her head up under his hand, waiting for him to scratch behind her ears, "But I'm not going to turn down an endorsement like that."

"Fair." Gabe flipped more pages. "If She really was the same being as Father, it's funny as hell to me, though. Makes me wonder if He wanted to dress down for a while. Take time away from scaring the piss out of people." It was said affectionately, though; Father had seemed to make peace with a lot of things when he was here.

There was something that was almost a smile at that. The man didn't use the expression often, which was likely why it seemed a little out of place, but he nodded, "Could be."

He skimmed over what might be a relevant passage before asking: "And how exactly were you thinking of doing this?"

(Reply to this)

[info]thereisakingdom
2011-03-26 03:32 am UTC (link)
"How?" Gabe echoed. "I don't remember the exact ritual, but I'd take a reasonable facsimile. Angelic bonding seemed like the most logical way to help her become immortal and bond to her at the same time. If we have to go through two steps, that would be okay too, as long as the risk was minimal. And before you say it, if you were going to say it," he added, "Lilo's told me that she's willing to look into this stuff. She's probably okay with more risk than I am." Damned if he'd ever let anything happen to her if he could help it.

"I wasn't going to say it." He said, again with that not-quite smile, "She's a grown adult, she knows her own mind." He drummed his fingers against the cover of the book in his hand, going over the passage once more before marking it and setting it aside to go onto the next book, "Might be two steps, realistically it's probably going to be three."

Gabe took up the book Bobby had just put down, peering at the pages. "Hm." It did look like at least two steps were necessary. Immortality and bonding. "Why three steps? Why not just two?"

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby
2011-03-26 04:31 am UTC (link)
"Something to make sure her mind doesn't deteriorate. Physical immortality is one thing, mental's something else." He tilted his head from side to side for a moment, weighing this out, "Might be able to find something that can do both, but that's a slim chance."

(Reply to this)

[info]thereisakingdom
2011-03-26 04:48 am UTC (link)
"Ah." Well, that made sense. Gabe went back to looking in the books Bobby had handed over. "Render the physical body unconscious or something, step one, step two, then awaken the subject and perform step three?" He winced belatedly. "Sorry, that sounds ... harsh. Just ... trying to focus, I don't know."

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby
2011-03-26 04:51 am UTC (link)
"It does." He agreed, "But that's about right. Though depending on what rites will actually work with what other rites, she might not have to be unconscious, just tranced or meditative."

(Reply to this)

[info]thereisakingdom
2011-03-26 05:13 am UTC (link)
"Well, that'd make me feel better." Obviously. "But if there has to be multiple steps, we'd want to do the physical, then the mental, and then the bonding." It was at least something to begin with. "Finding trance spells is easy. It's the mental and the bonding that need work."

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby
2011-03-26 05:55 am UTC (link)
He nodded, "That'd be the right order, yeah." And with that he was paging carefully through the next book, "I'm starting to think a hodge-podge is going to be your best bet."

(Reply to this)

[info]thereisakingdom
2011-03-26 06:19 am UTC (link)
"A hodgepodge of rites from different religions, you mean?" He wasn't wild about the idea. "I'm frankly out of my element if it isn't Jewish or Christian. Or I do know someone who might know about old Assyrian rites. But beyond that you might have to point me in the right direction." He'd do it if he had to, of course; he just was out of his depth.

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby
2011-03-26 06:24 am UTC (link)
He shook his head, "Not different religions, just different sources. Going to be like one of those logic puzzles where you've got to find the common denominator in three different stories."

(Reply to this)

"I get you." Gabe stopped on one specific book. "Check this out. Isn't this notes on when Enoch was turned immortal?" Shit. He might very well have to talk to Raz.

Bobby looked it over, head tilted, brow creasing slightly as he read it over, twice, just to make sure, "Sure as hell what it looks like to me."

"Enoch ascended; technically this isn't an ascension, but it might be a place to start?" Gabe looked over at him. "One of my brothers does know about ascensions. I could ask him about that. If there's a way just to do the mental part of an ascension? To change the mind while leaving the physical to a different path?"

(Reply to this)

[info]uncle_bobby

He drummed his fingers against the edge of the desk a moment, scanning the shelves on the west wall, "Should be. Just have to find out who knows how and if they took notes."

He pushed himself up from his seat then, going to tug another few books down, marking their places easily, "It's a place to start."

(Reply to this)

"I can ask my brother." Gabe was relieved to have at least a shred of a lead. "What about the bonding ritual? I'm pretty sure we do have something like that, I just don't remember much about it." Then again, if he was wrong, other religions had something. The bonding would in theory be the easiest."

"Your family ain't big on writing things down, from what I can tell. Doesn't mean they didn't ever, just means it's going to take a while to find is all." He shrugged, "For what it's worth, I know I've heard of it, just not entirely sure from who or when."

"Raziel may be to blame for that one." Gabriel chuckled. His brother had been a bit particular even when he'd still been Raziel. "Maybe another thing I can ask him about. Or hell, I wonder if Ariel got any of that knowledge." He shrugged. "To be honest, about all I can tell you is that the War fucked up a lot of stuff." Records were lost, and well, people died.

"Yeah, war's got a way of doing that." He scratched the back of his neck then, "You got other people you want to talk to while I slog through this? Or you want to do that after?"

(Reply to this)

"I can go talk to my brothers, yeah." Or, he realized, records. Qing. The man seemed to like his solitude, anyway. Gabe fished in his pocket for a business card. "You can get a hold of me here, or just call the house." Hopefully Lilo wouldn't put two and two together, though.
