Entry tags:mia dearden, ollie queen, what if?

Who: Ollie and Mia
What: A reuniting from across universes.
When: Early evening, today.
Warnings: Language, maybe?

Ollie's apartment was clearly the kind of place that was occupied by at least one very feminine person, if only on an unofficial basis. The curtains all matched the decor of the room they were in, for one thing; come to that, there was decor at all. The bathroom had a large collection of towels and the shower had a collection of soaps in various scents and moisture levels. Ollie's bedroom had a faint floral odor to it that came from Kimber's body spray.

The only anomaly was Mia's bedroom, which Mia had no doubt very politely and firmly informed Kimber that she was to stay out of. It wasn't unpleasant, by any means, but it was distinctly hers, even if it clearly hadn't been slept in for the past few days.

It felt more or less like home, but the lack of wedding pictures meant that it probably wasn't. Ollie took his copy out of his wallet and tucked it in the corner of the mirror in the bedroom, sighed wistfully at it, and willed the madness to be over. When nothing much changed, he went back into the living room and stared at his computer for a while, trying to piece together why Mia would be so put off by talking to him. She obviously lived here; there was a couple of her costumes in the costume closet, one of which had a boob window in it--he would have to talk to her about that one of these days--and he had enough food to feed an army, or at least one teenager.

He wondered what her weird thing was. Maybe she was from a universe where she wasn't dating the spook?

Wishful thinking, perhaps.

He was pulled out of his reverie by a knock at the door. "It's your door, kid," he said as he got up. "You don't have to knock on it." Ollie turned the handle and opened the door to find Mia standing there. "Hey."

Ollie was nearly tackled by the green and yellow costume-clad teen at his door. Mia had looked up at him only long enough to be sure it was him before burying her face against his chest as she gave him the tightest hug she could muster. "Hey," she said, her voice shaking a little.

She hadn't seen him in years. She'd kept up the vigilante act, and had managed to make it work. Her life had kept going. There was school, doctors appointments, a boyfriend and Vegas. She had thought she was getting back to normal, but seeing Ollie again made the last few years without him seem like they'd happened in a vacuum.

"You're going to have to call one of those Jaws of Life operator guys," she told him as she clung on. "Or a kid that's really good at that claw game."

"Y'ever get that feeling where you get brought into a conversation that's halfway done and no one feels like telling you what you missed? 'Cause that's you, right now." She squeezed him tighter, and so he returned the hug, feeling that she somehow needed it. When last he left her, Mia was as irreverent and non-affectionate as ever.

They had been standing like that for some time before Ollie looked down and said, "You have a costume change I didn't know about?"

"You've been dead for three years," she finally told him in a soft voice. Her grip had loosened, but she still didn't move away. "Doctor Light kidnapped you and we tried to save you but he was too much for us and we couldn't help you in time." She stopped before her voice started wavering too much, swallowing past the lump in her throat. "I shouldn't be this freaked out, since the vortex does all kind of crazy shit, but I wasn't expecting you."

"Yeah, I stole your colors. Shut up and keep being not-dead."

"Vortex nothing. Home does this," said Ollie, who'd come back from the dead at least once that he knew of. Nevertheless, he tightened the hug; he knew what it was to lose someone, even if, from his perspective, she was crazy.

This was a Mia he didn't really know. Where he came from, Mia and the Titans had rescued him from Doctor Light, making him feel ashamed that he ever had to be saved from Doctor fucking Light, of all people. But that was years ago. "Come on in," he said. "You'll have to tell me everything I missed."

"Yeah, true. Still." It was weird and amazing and a little nerve-wracking. She just hoped he was here permanently, and not just for a week. Losing him again would be heartbreaking. She gave him one last squeeze before relaxing and shrugging out of the hug.

She walked in, feeling kind of like she was a fifteen-year old sidekick again. "Nice place," she commented with an eyebrow arch. Not exactly Ollie's style. "Well... Connor and I worked together for a little while before the vortex sucked me up here. And this is just a big ball of wacky." It was weird that Ollie didn't seem to be a new arrival. He talked like he already knew about the vortex and all its madness. "Doing the crime fighting thing solo here." Ollie probably wouldn't like that much, but she was a big girl. "Health is good. Graduated last year! That was cool." What else? She ran a hand through her hair, looking a little sheepish. "Uh, was in Vegas a couple weeks ago and got married. Would've waited for you if I knew you were coming."

"Yeah, the decor," said Ollie, who hadn't had the whole of Mia's statement register in his head yet. "It's... it's mostly the missus. There'd be a little more of the missus if this were the right universe and she wasn't crazy, but what're you gonna do. Your room's through that door there in case you're cur--you're married? What? To the spook? You married the spook?"

He raised his arms as if speaking to some invisible audience and cried out, "My kid gone off and married a Fed. Christ. Ain't enough I get killed by some yahoo like Doctor Light." There was a smirk there, though. "It ain't too late. I got money. We can go and get you an annulment. S'practically what Vegas weddings are for, keeping the annulment business running."

Mia's face fell at Ollie's reaction, obviously upset by his disapproval even through her confusion. "What? Spook?" It had been years since she'd seen Ollie, so she wasn't used to hearing people use 1930's slang anymore. "He's not a Fed!" She'd been excited to introduce Eli to Ollie, and had texted her new husband as much earlier. She hadn't expected him to act like this. Ollie had to have him confused with someone else from his universe, or something. She crossed her arms. "Eli doesn't work for the government. We work at the Lightman Group. It's not a government thing."

She rolled his eyes when she saw him smirk, toughening up. She punched him in the shoulder. "I kinda like him, asshole. Stop being a drama Queen."

"You must, if you're popping questions at him." Ollie sighed. "You're only dating where I'm from. He's terrified of me." That brought a proud smile to his lips. "'Course I guess you could have brought home a war criminal," that was Roy, "or an assassin," both Roy and Connor, "or a Bat." Roy again; he and Dick always seemed too close for Ollie to think they were just pals.

"So, you're going solo, taking your pills, got married... all on your own. I'm proud of you, kid."

Mia raised a brow, trying to imagine Eli and Ollie interacting. Yeah, she could see Eli being a little terrified. "You aren't allowed to shoot my husband." The newness of that moniker hadn't worn off yet, and she couldn't help grinning. She shrugged. "I'm the good kid."

"Yeah, well.." She shrugged, smiling. What the heck was she supposed to say to that? She hadn't been expecting her dead father-figure to come back and tell her he was proud of her. It was great! But she definitely did not have a witty comeback planned. "Thanks."

"I ain't gonna shoot him. Too much, anyhow." What else was there? It was a strange feeling. He knew, or suspected, that there was something expected of him: Mia hadn't seen him for years now. But he'd seen her yesterday, and he couldn't think of anything that he didn't know about Mia that she would want him to ask her about. She was a hero. She was a wife. She was healthy, considering. And she was happy, which was the important thing.

The thought that, without him to make Star City a target, Prometheus had never attacked and Lian was still alive occurred to him and was quickly dismissed. He didn't want to know. Better to imagine that she was. But the thought did make him think of another thing he should be asking: "So, this wedding of yours, it wasn't a shotgun affair, was it? The spook put you in the family way?"

Mia laughed loudly. It wasn't a preposterous suggestion, but it was so far from her mind that it hadn't even crossed her mind. "You're a crazy man," she said, shaking her head. "No babies. Never ever-ever-ever." Beyond Mia's complete lack of maternal instincts, there were practical reasons for locking down on that one. "No glove, no love, yadda yadda. I'm not an idiot."

She tugged on the ends of her hair, not really sure what to talk about. She was tempted to just drag him out into patrolling. Fighting alongside him again would be awesome, but it was probably just trying to avoid the awkwardness. "Hey, so tell me about this crazy wife of yours."

"Just trying to get you riled up a little." It was something she'd missed out on, if he'd been killed by Doctor Light. It would have been just after taking her on, back when he was sharing custody with the Titans. It was different, going from Ollie the over-protective parent to Green Arrow the mentor. Both Roy and Connor started their relationship with him as people ready for the superhero career, whereas Mia, when he'd taken her in, had just been his kid for a long time.

Well, at least she had that much to remember him by. "Kimber Benson, that's her name. Still her name, too; kept it after we tied the knot. Don't know if you've got one of her where you come from, but she'll be a singer over there. I'd introduce you--well, re-introduce you, I guess--but she's got a bad case of the crazies now." Kind of like you, was the unvoiced thought, but where Mia's madness just made her a bit sad, Kimber's had her turned into a whole different person.

She rolled her eyes at him, shaking her head. Ridiculous. As jarring as it was for her to suddenly deal with crazy Ollie getting all weird about her husband, he probably would've been doing it all along if he'd been around. He'd think of it as his job.

Mia wrinkled her nose at the name. Mia mainly knew her by her music, and wasn't a huge fan of it. A little too poppy for Mia's taste. "Kimber, the singer?" She tilted her head, furrowing her brow. "Isn't she--You know, nevermind." The less details the better. She didn't want to hear about the weird stuff.
