WHO: Lakshmi and Uzza
WHAT: Uzza asked her out!
WHERE: Dubai to begin with
WARNINGS: Unlikely but possible.

She'd been surprised and flattered when Uzza had asked her to accompany him somewhere, and she'd accepted with some reservations. She wasn't certain if he had the right idea of her, to be honest, but she enjoyed his company, and if she had to gently put him straight, hopefully she could do that.

She was dressed simply, shirt and skirt, with fishnet stockings and plain, low heels. She waited in the lobby of her apartment building in Dubai, curious as to when Uzza would arrive and what he might have planned.

Uzza walked into the lobby wearing a suit that Kokabiel had picked out and holding a bouquet of roses that had a single lotus flower in its center. He was decidedly nervous and looked it; his hurried walk was not at all its normal fluid self.

Lakshmi noticed him, smiling. "You look very dashing." She came over and rested her hands on his shoulders, kissing his cheek. "It's nice to see you. Is all well?" She smiled at the flowers. "You didn't have to do that."

"All is wonderful." Uzza smiled to himself, handing the flowers over. "They're for you." The lotus in the middle reminded him of her - the most beautiful thing in a world of beautiful things. "Thank you for coming with me."

"Thank you." She took the flowers, but she took the lotus out, lightly bending the stem and sliding the flower into her hair. "It even matches. And I'm happy you came. It's so nice to see an old friend."

Looking at his feet, Uzza sighed. "I should be honest. You know I love you, yes?" He felt his heart sink to his stomach, and his voice grew very quiet.

Lakshmi blinked, confused at first. Her eyes grew soft. "If we're going to talk like this, let's go upstairs." She took his hand, more to steady them both than anything, and led him back toward the elevator. Once they were there, however, she simply teleported them back upstairs into her sitting room. She had a view over the burgeoning city, with construction cranes in her near view.

Once they were there, she looked over at him, woebegone. "I didn't know that. No."

He was afraid that she'd have this reaction, and he moved to look out the window once they were in her room. "It isn't your fault. It's nothing that can be helped. You have a lovely view from here."

She held up a hand. "I wasn't finished. I'm sorry, but I would like to know how you can be sure? I don't ask to cause you pain, but I know that feelings can feed upon themselves over time." She smiled, trying to be gentle, walking over behind him, arms folded across her body. She genuinely liked him and felt bad hurting his feelings, even a bit. "I would hate to not live up to the picture you may have painted."

Uzza closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the window. "I knew when I was with you last. I'd honestly figured I'd never see you again. I loved other women in your absence. I didn't say I loved you to the extent of self-hatred, or to the point where I forsook all others. Just that I do. I have never been happier than I was when I was with you."

That made her feel better, honestly; being esteemed was not the same as being the object of obsession. Lakshmi nodded, smiling a trifle sadly. She couldn't help but feel a bit responsible; she hated causing pain to anyone, even unintentionally.

She laid a hand on his arm, wanting him to look at her. "I would still love to spend time with you, and I would still very much like to keep in contact with you. I was and am very fond of you, but right now, that is as much as I can say."

He smiled a little to himself. 'Right now' was better than many other things she could've said. He took her hand and kissed it, light and brief. "Enough sadness. Let us go and eat."

"All right, yes. I would be happy to see what you have planned." She smiled in return, relieved that they could at least come to some sort of agreement. "Please, lead on."

He smiled, sending them both to a small noodle shop near his own home. "I know that you will end up retiring at your own home, and that is fine, but I love it here." He guided her toward a chair, smiling a little when one of the waitresses tittered about him bringing a girl there. He was quietly glad Lakshmi couldn't hear her jealousy.

"I like Japan; it's quite nice." Lakshmi didn't notice anyone looking at her or Uzza. "It is usually busy and frantic, but this place is not. You said it was near your temple?" His temple had been a paramount center of peace; that might explain it.

Nodding, he tried to ignore the waitress gesturing angrily at him and raising her voice. "It is very near my home." He steepled his fingers, looking down at his hands.

She raised an eyebrow at the waitress, trying to remember her Japanese, to ask if there was a problem, but it had all apparently gone. He'd taught her bits and pieces when they were lovers, but that had been ... ages ago. So instead, Lakshmi simply waved a hand and muttered some Hindu words, and the Japanese woman continued to gesticulate, but her voice was muted. "She will hear herself," Lakshmi told Uzza, "but we don't have to." She smiled. Uzza's problems with people were his own business. She simply wanted her own time to be fun.

Uzza chuckled, his mouth remaining upward. He let his hand rest on her upper back. "Do you you need assistance in ordering?" He could smell her hair, and leaned over, eyes closed.

"No, thank you, I'm fine." Japanese food suited her, or at least she thought it did. "Yakitori?" Meat, if she remembered.

Uzza nodded. "Mmhmm." He knew what he was going to order, but still scanned the menu. "I am sorry. I should not have said what I did earlier."

"Really, I would prefer honesty. It's all right." She rested a hand on top of his, smiling a little. "I can assess how to act when one is honest with me. If I am given lies, I can only act on lies. The question is if you can stand my company or not." She hoped so.

"I can. I'd miss you too much if you weren't around. Like I have been. I didn't pine, but every now and again, I'd smell flowers blowing the right way, and it would remind me of you." He chuckled and waved a clerk over to order for them.

She had to admit, she liked that. Though she felt a twinge of guilt that it was flattering when someone missed her. Lakshmi looked away, smiling. The lotus stayed in her hair, though it fluttered. "You must have a chance to be around a lot of flowers. That's what I think I miss about Dubai." She liked the city, but it wasn't very green.
