Who: Mephistopheles and Kokabiel
What: Understanding.
Where: Uzza's temple on Toshima Island
When: Weekend
Warnings: Swearing.

Mephisto teleported himself to the bottom step of Uzza's temple, and took a deep, unnecessary breath, sighing it out to calm his mind. He knew Uzza was not there for the day, but there was a fallen angel at the top of the climb. He started walking slowly up the steps, feeling the Eastern spells tug at him, touch him like bony, weak fingers as he could feel himself come to a sense of peace. He folded his blackened, ashy wings against his back, and bowed at the top of the stairs, before he walked into the temple. He took off his shoes and went to the front room -- the prayer room, and there he crouched.

He spoke Kokabiel's name as he knelt down, gentle as a whisper, but no less a summoning that it was for the quiet way it was spoken. He wanted to speak to her alone, wanted to clear the air. He had a feeling that his wrath, his lesson, the bitter words spoken to her that fateful night of finding her and finding Ariel wounded, had all left a bitter impression in her mind and heart. He wanted resolution.

She was still angel enough to feel the tug of summoning on her, though the summoner was new; it wasn't Azrael or Uzza. She closed her eyes and teleported toward the source of the request.

Opening her eyes, she saw the prayer room in Toshima, but there was another occupant within it. Raziel. But not Raziel. Her muscles tensed, and she knew if there was an aura reader around, hers might just have turned black in fear. She hated herself for being frightened, but there it was.

She wet her lips, and spoke. "I'm sorry, I don't know what to call you at this point."

"You're not the only one," Mephisto said, "but don't worry about trifling matters like names." He faced her, mocking eye contact. "Would you sit, please? I know you are frightened, but I do not wish to cause fear in you, Kokabiel." He had rested his hands in his lap, and was clearly not on the offensive. "I believe your lesson was learned. I mean you no harm, Kabie. Hell is not the place for you. For any of us."

She wasn't about to let her guard down right away, but she did relax somewhat. She sat in front of him, looking up at the former devil - who, she noticed, was blind again. "I'd like to think my lesson was learned," Kabe said cautiously.

"It has been. I care too greatly for my own kind," he replied on the heels of her answer, barely room between her words and his to breathe. "I care too greatly for us to see them die, to see them fall further. Our reasons for being have changed in time, in falling to this plane. The reasons may not seem clear to us, but Kabie, I dare say you have found yours. Madness ill became you, but death... Well, it's as natural for you, a warrior, as grace and beauty." He shook his head, turning it at the sound of one of the strays walking in quietly, paying the fallen angels little mind.

"I want you to know that what I did was just as much a lesson as it was a rash decision on my part. For the latter, I apologize." He shook his head subtly and continued, "It was because the man you harmed is more important than anyone could possibly know. If they cannot and will not have me to teach them, who will? Ariel is... a legacy. An answered prayer from a long-muted tongue. And I will not let any harm come to him. Perhaps what I did was far more than you deserved, because of my protectiveness."

Kokabiel watched him as he spoke, both listening and eyeing him. He looked tired, and almost somehow ... regretful. His eyes were almost maddened, almost aching and in pain.

She listened to what he had to say, though, and her brow furrowed. When he was done speaking, she had to ask. "Maybe I don't have the right to ask ... but why is he so important?"

"He is my heir, so to speak," Mephisto near whispered, "He will ascend. If I cannot, and though I will not, he deserves his redemption, and Heaven deserves to have a prince of Thrones, an ear at the curtain, a guide, a teacher... It deserves its magic. It is clear to me that without one to take my place for so long, things are..." Shit. Things fell apart without him, and they'd been atrophying and decaying since his time on Earth. While he couldn't give a damn about God, or religions founded on their Kingdom, it was clear to him that his brothers were in need of help, and he knew he couldn't provide that.

"Things are bad for my brothers." Was all he said to it. "Things are resting heavily on Gabriel's shoulders, and when my baby brother is as stressed as he is, it is clear to me that my once-carefree brother is indicative of the state of things. Like a rope gone too taut and fraying in the center. I cannot sit idly by and watch the weight of the world fall and crush them."

Kokabiel's eyes went soft. "Gabriel's in trouble?" She knew Gabriel well enough, and he was the only Archangel save Uriel, who she knew was dead, that she trusted. "I know he's here; I wish he'd have told me. I've only talked to Uzza since being here."

She understood, however, what the fallen angel meant about a replacement. "The Thrones were in constant flux," Kabe said softly, "when I was up there. Even when I was allowed up there, the higher levels were in chaos." It almost hurt to think of. "They need the help."

"Not in imminent danger, no, but his stress worries me." Mephisto wasn't the gentlest, most sympathetic being in existence. Not even close. But when his brothers were feeling the weight of troubles that they could do nothing about, he had the inclination to try and help. It was a wonder that they took so long to speak to him. He shifted fluidly into a more comfortable position, crossing his legs and putting his clawed hands on his knees. "And it's been a very long time since you were up there, hasn't it been? It could have only gotten worse. I can't care less about God's Kingdom, as well you know, but if the only home that my brothers know, I cannot let it fall around them."

He knew it wouldn't be his work that would fix things, it would be Ariel's, and to Ariel's credit, Mephisto thought that the man could do it, and would deserve that credit. But it needed to be done, regardless of whose hard work it would take.

"I will no longer be a part of it, once Ariel takes my place. I will be powerless to do anything, for good or bad. But we've gotten off track, haven't we? Are you well? I had a moment where I wished to stay and guide you through Hell, myself, but with as much work that needs to be done, and with as strong as you are, I knew you would claw your way topside, without me." He had confidence in the leader of the Grigori - more than she likely knew - and did feel just the slightest pang of remorse when he left her in Cocytus.

She wasn't quite ready to let it go yet. "Before we talk about me, can I ask one thing?" She bit her lip. "Can I maybe ... talk to him?" The heir, obviously; she knew Mephisto-Raziel would know. "I want to explain. Apologise, if you think I need to." She'd given it a lot of thought, and if he was going to be some kind of higher-up, she wanted to apologise. But she also just genuinely wanted to apologise.

"If you think you must apologize, do it. He recovered quickly enough, but only for the fact that I made him immortal before you even knew he existed, and through my knowledge of mercury, and how to draw it from a living body." He shook his head. "I know you were angry, but why strike out so harshly at the innocent? If you still wish to destroy me, you may yet have your chance," Mephisto murmured. "But do it for what I did to you, not for what I am, or was. Not for what it may get you."

She kept her temper. "I wanted to destroy you because I feared you. I still do," she ground out, before instantly feeling foolish. Still, she pushed on. "But I don't want to do anything to anyone anymore. Az gave me my job, I want to do it and just ... I don't know, live. Fucking hell, God Himself has come back and seems to absolutely delight in fucking with me. At this point I just want to atone and be."

"I sincerely hope you find redemption, Kabie," Mephisto murmured, strangely motionless. He still felt drained, and it wasn't getting any better with the passing days, "some solace for yourself. I hope that I helped with that. However, I don't have much faith in the prospect of redemption. As for fearing me, there's nothing to fear."

"You don't think I can be redeemed, or you don't think anyone can?" Kokabiel folded her arms. "If there's nothing to be afraid of, I can just come out and say you look like shit. Is there anything I can do?" She owed him, even if he didn't think so. Kabe liked to pay her debts.

"I don't think that there's such a thing. At least, for my old soul." He was blunt about it. It wasn't as if he had much to lose with her, but when she asked if there was anything he could do, it got something near a smile from him. "Nothing to make me look less like shit. As long as I was human, I didn't realize that my powers were slowly being moved into Ariel." He gave a slight shrug and then smiled more earnestly. "Of course, my appearance has nothing to do with my current mental state. I'm simply glad you haven't carried any malice for what I've done to you. In time, I hope you may stop fearing me." She was a sweet creature, under the grit and short fuse, and he did not want to see her fear anything. No warrior should.

His powers were being moved ... oh, fuck. Now she really had to meet the human. Kabe didn't dare pity him, though, at least not aloud. She wouldn't have wanted pity. She did, however, offer the only Out she could. "If you do ever need a place to relax for a while, though, you know coming here is fine. Uzza worries about you, I know that. And I wouldn't carry any malice for what you did. You probably saved my ass." She shook her head. "Being angry almost screwed me forever. I've seen what it would get me." She'd had a few bad dreams since coming back, but of all things not to talk about.

"He is a good friend and a wonderful person, Uzza. If I must retire entirely, I would think of no better place than somewhere where they've only ever heard of me as a work of fiction," joked Mephisto. He wasn't ready to give up just yet, though. "You do realize that once he's up there, he'll need a balance. A foil."

"Your human? It makes sense." She wasn't stupid, though, and realized what he meant. "A balance. So you're basically saying that however angelic - good, for lack of a better word - your human is, you have to be equally demonic or bad to set some mythical scale right?" It sounded like bullshit to her, frankly, but maybe she wasn't getting it.

"Not even remotely. With what powers would I counteract him on my own? No, the world tends to balance itself. I can only imagine what they're cooking up down in the pit to counteract him. What I mean is that I will serve as that for as long as I possibly can, provided he doesn't decide, on a whim, that he'll turn his back on me. It is quite possible that he will." No need for him to go into all the history that he and Ariel had to her, unless she desired to hear it. "Let's just put it this way, he and I haven't always been as close."

Kokabiel nodded. That didn't necessarily suggest "balance" to her, but she understood his general gist. "I hope he doesn't. It'd be a pretty fucking ungrateful turn for all you've given him, if he did." Learning, okay, but giving up his powers, even involuntarily? Kabe couldn't imagine doing that for any human. "He must be extraordinary."

"He is," Mephisto agreed, "And believe me, it's not as ungrateful as you'd think it would be. It would simply be karmic on both our ends if he simply destroyed me the first chance he got. I know him better than that, though. He is above biting the hand that feeds him. He is... well, he had the potential to be this the whole time, and it took me a trip to Hell to realize it."

Kokabiel had to laugh, though it was gentle, more at herself than at the old angel. "I'd never have believed you once upon a time. Thought I'd married the only human worth a damn. Most humans nowadays just make me feel old." Fast-paced lives, constant electronics, and little personal feelings. There were still a few humans she'd met that understood simple things. But not many.

"Well, nowadays, there aren't humans of value. He's not from now." Mephisto got a grin at that, or what passed for a grin on his generally grim face. "The man is from about two hundred years ago. And you were always just as critical of humans as I am. They aren't half as bad as you or I make them out to be, I believe. Simply foolish and misguided in their attempts to make something of themselves."

"Most of them are obsessed with excess." Kabe's tone held real disgust, but there was a good amount of sheer weariness in there, too. "Today it's not about being fulfilled or happy, it's all about Getting More Stuff. Bugs me. I kind of want to whack a few heads and ask them why we put them on the right path." She laughed, only half joking.

"Mea culpa," Mephisto said, his tone almost proud. "The sin of greed will always be the easiest to give in to, and always will be the sin most easily fulfilled. You were in America for most of it, and they are a gluttonous society in and of themselves; they love decadence, revel in excess, and it's all the easier to give them what they want. Or what they believe they desire, at the very least. You cannot buy happiness, not even with your soul."

She smiled, but there was a faint aura of distaste about it. Whenever she forgot, somehow he always reminded her that Mephistopheles was in that skin, as well as whatever was left of Raziel. Kabe said quietly, "I am damned glad you never found your way down to the outskirts of Metairie, you know." With what she'd been put through, she wasn't entirely sure she wouldn't have let herself be seduced.

"I'm sure my presence was felt there just as it has been everywhere else," Mephisto murmured, "but I try not to stray too far from Europe. After all the fun I've had here," he was only the slightest bit sarcastic about that, "Why leave?"

"I know a lot of the story." She'd done some digging, when she could, and she'd obviously read Goethe. "Is it weird if I say that there are times I've been jealous of you?" Not that she wanted to be hellspawn or anything close to it, but there were times she envied his freedom. Especially since God had stuck his big fucking nose back into her life.

"There's no need to be jealous, just do what you wish to do, provided it doesn't lead down the path of damnation. You'd think that as God's children, we'd have more leniency, but oh, how false that assumption is." He smirked, "And you've read the story, I presume? I can't say I didn't have a hand in its writing, the wordsmith came to me, and got to know me himself, before writing a story that was, in a word, prophetic. It may not have been entirely accurate," Mephisto said with a dismissing wave of his hand, "but it was close enough where Ariel is uncomfortable with the mere mention of Goethe. Not to speak anything of Marlowe's rendition. I'd only assume the poor old chap would have a mental break if someone were to compare him to Faustus." He had to chuckle. Ariel's many triggers were so easy to find and pull to him, that it was almost a pity that he made himself generally abstain.

"I read Faust cover to cover. It was one of the few books the preacher kept in the church library back in Louisiana. All the better to scream about your evil with, I guess." Kabe shrugged. "I never read Marlowe but I know he made it all ... homoerotic." She had to snicker. "If your friend dates from two hundred years ago, well ... yeah." Angels tended to be less picky about sexuality than humans, but still.

"He wouldn't even consider the notion of sleeping with a male," Mephisto murmured, chuckling to himself at the thought, "and I barely have time to properly seduce Astarte, and haven't really considered sexuality one of the things I should add to my repertoire." He shrugged one shoulder. "The whole act of sex is far too... messy for my tastes."

Kabe had frankly figured Raziel for a monk. It would have to be an extraordinary being who made such a crotchety old bastard sit up and take notice. She knew, though, that Astarte was another name for Inanna, the fertility goddess, and she couldn't help the amused smile that broke its way over her features.

All she said, though, was "It has a lot of different purposes, but not for everybody." She liked sex, though she hadn't gotten much since Yoshua had been gone.

"I'm not going to deny that, or deny another person their desires. I simply cannot find myself mentally attached to the idea." The fact that Ash had even worked her way under his skin baffled him, even to this day. They'd flirted aimlessly for thousands of years, but it was only just recently that he'd felt that the flirtation was more than a hobby. The friendship had transformed while he wasn't looking. He smiled faintly at his thought of Astarte's beauty, still fresh in his memory.

"In any case," Mephisto said, keeping his voice even, not the powerful boom that it was usually, "Kabie, I came here to make sure that you are all right. It's been months since then, but..." But he still had lingering regrets... "But I know that Hell can make its mark."

"I'm fine," Kabe said immediately, then stopped to think. "I'm okay," she said, sounding slightly less sure of herself. "It still bugs me, what I did, but I figure it should, you know? I get bad dreams sometimes, but I kinda figure I deserve that." She looked at him, even though she knew he couldn't look back. "Going through Hell itself, though, I'm okay with that. Every time I get pissed off since then, I've sort of thought of it. Reminds me to not do anything stupid again."
