Eliot had worked the better part of the day outside in the stables. He'd mucked the stalls, and rewarded himself with an hour or so bareback ride. He'd made his way back to the ranch just past suppertime, but in time to read the girls a bedtime story.

They were in bed now, and as was his habit, Eliot had retired to his oversized chair to read the paper. He had his glasses on, his hair pulled back because it needed to be washed, after spending the day in the hot sun. He'd just started reading about the arrest of a college athletic director, but stopped and cocked his head, listening.

Candy was somewhere, doing something. He figured it must be her he heard, but something seemed a bit off. He frowned, and tilted his head the other way, listening.
