Petit stepped down from the porch when she saw him coming, Toto climbing easily up to her shoulder, where he sat like some bizarre pirate's parrot, third claw still waving, eyestalks extended to full height, which wasn't very high, but he was definitely excited to be on the way.
Petit smiled, just faintly, as she usually did, "I've got two questions." She said by way of greeting, "The first is, can you see this?" 'this' of course, being Toto, who she'd swept from her shoulder and was holding up in the palm of her hand.
