Who: Sam Ford and Eliot Spencer
What: Talking
Where/When: Sam's hospital room/Today
Warnings: Not likely, unless Eliot gets mouthy

Eliot had been in Sam's room twice since the accident, but he'd been overwhelmed by everyone else and hadn't said much. He'd asked Nate to clear everybody else out, so he could talk to Sam alone. He didn't handle the whole group setting very well; he tended to hover by the window as if on a silent watch.

He was just as nervous going into the room alone. Sam had partial amnesia. He didn't remember the past year, or so. No one really knew why, or how, or what he actually remembered and didn't remember. Eliot had no idea where he stood with Sam, except that he was fairly sure Sam didn't know they were brothers. He wasn't sure if it was his place to tell Sam, or if Nate should do it. He wasn't sure he wanted to be the one.

"Hey." He hooked his thumbs on his belt loops, then pulled a hand up to run over his hair. He had one of Candy's ties holding it back from his face, and his hand disrupted the smooth lay. A lock of his hair came forward, falling across his forehead. He reached back to pull the tie loose, letting his hair fall around his face. "You okay?" He asked, words stunted. It wasn't that long ago he'd been the one in the bed, and people had awkwardly asked him how he was. He felt foolish and out of place.

"Hey," Sam said, a small smile on his lips. "You get hit by a car too?" Sam joked, not expecting an answer from Eliot. The man was usually quiet--with the exception of the occasional growl--and most of the team refused to talk about their 'work' with Sam. Sam knew, of course, and occasionally gave them grief in a way that no one had to admit they actually knew what was going on. It was a game Sam was pretty good at. Eliot kept the most distance from Sam of any of them, so he was a little surprised the man was here on his own. They never had serious conversations in private like this.

Sam shrugged. "Yeah. Planning a daring escape." Brain injury, blahblah, observation, blahblahblah. Sam was sick of people having to come somewhere they hated just to see him.

"I'd suggest the air ducts. Go up, then down. They always look down, first. Fake them out, then make a break for it." Eliot didn't sit in the chair. He paced, and looked awkward and uncomfortable with the whole thing, but it was more about the hospital itself, and the fact he didn't know where he stood with Sam. Yeah, he was uncomfortable.

He didn't comment on his physical condition, and hoped Sam would let that drop. He really didn't want to get in to how he'd gone looking for trouble, and had found a handful of thugs to smack around. In the end, it hadn't made him feel any better, so he just wanted to put it all behind him.

He stopped at the end of the bed, and faced Sam. Candy had told him he'd reminded her of a tiger in a cage, and that was more or less how he felt.

"Good to know." Sam's expression was one of amusement, if a little confusion. Eliot sounded a good deal more serious than Sam had been. He was ready to be discharged, but didn't think he was in good enough shape to crawl through air ducts. Eliot probably still could if he had Sam's injuries, but Sam was kind of a wuss, compared to him.

Sam wasn't planning on hounding Eliot. He knew better than to push any of them too far. There was a point where his teasing the team wasn't fun anymore, and he knew where the threshold was for each of them. Eliot's was pretty close to the surface, and Sam was more careful with him than the others.

Sam shrugged. "Really, not feeling that bad." That could have something to do with the pain meds he was on. "But the nurses want to keep watching me--think I'm cute. What can I say?" Sam shrugged, smirking.

"Of course they do." A smile might have snaked up on him, and made the corners of his mouth twitch. He wasn't the total unflinching, unfeeling bad ass Sam thought him to be. Sure, that was the image he tried to project, and he was probably more unstable and more volatile than the rest of them, but he had mellowed out considerably, in the last year. Sam had been a big influence in that, though Eliot lacked the words to tell him as much.

"It's good, though. That you're not feeling too bad." He nodded, paced a few steps. He moved tot he chair and stood behind it. He felt too restless to sit. "So, you and Iggy. That must be a shock, yeah?" He was trying to feel Sam out, figure out where he fit in to his brother's memories. Using Iggy as a starting point may have been one of the most indirect routes to get to what he wanted, but that was Eliot for you.

Sam watched Eliot, smiling a bit. He could tell Eliot was trying, which Sam appreciated, even if it was kind of awkward. He figured there was something important that Eliot needed to talk about, but neither one of them really knew how to go about it.

His eyes widened when Eliot mentioned Iggy. Who'd told Eliot? It was kind of hard to deny things when you couldn't remember anything for the past year. He could've made out with Iggy in front of Eliot, for all he knew. "Uh. Yeah. I guess word gets out, huh?" He scratched the back of his head, trying to read Eliot to see what he thought about that little revelation.

"Yeah." Eliot nodded. Eliot really didn't know what else to say, so he said nothing. He walked back over to the window, but didn't stay there long. He paced back to side of the bed. He wrung his hands together, and probably looked like he was thinking about making an escape through the air ducts.

"He's a good guy," Eliot finally said, the words strained and awkward. "Really cares about you."

Sam didn't generally consider himself a paranoid person, but considering 32 hours he had been deeply in the back of the closet, not even dreaming about telling Eliot or anyone else, and now everybody knew.. Eliot was acting really weird, and Sam didn't know why he was bringing this up. Was he going to preach to Sam? Tell him what he was doing was wrong? That didn't sound like Eliot's style, whether or not he thought those things.

"Um. That's good." Sam didn't really know how to respond that. He was just getting to know Iggy himself. He seemed like a good guy, and the fact that he would stick with Sam through all this was pretty amazing. Inside his head, Sam was screaming Why are we talking about this?!, but he didn't voice that outloud, hoping to figure out in a more diplomatic way.

Eliot really had no idea how to relate to Sam. He didn't relate well to people anyway. he wanted to think he was doing better, what with Riley and Ash and Candy helping him along. he'd even asked someone on the message boards to help out on the ranch, he'd asked her to check up on the horses and the dogs while he was away. He was making huge strides, but being in Sam's hospital room reminded him just how far he had yet to go.

"What's the last thing you remember?" Eliot decided the best way to go about it was to go right to the point. He was uncomfortable with the small talk, and obviously Sam was too.

"Well, there was this really awkward moment where you asked me about my boyfriend." Sam cracked a grin, but the joke fell flat. Not surprising. Sam shrugged. "Sophie was in the Taming of the Shrew. I took Candy, you took... that cute brunette," Sam couldn't remember her name. He shrugged. "School was wrapping up, and I was going to meet Candy for dinner and talk about.. stuff."

After that, everything went black. Sam was, quite frankly, relieved it was related to a car accident or whatever. Passing out and waking up in a hospital was not a good sign for a cancer survivor. "Iggy said that was about a year ago."

"Yeah." Eliot nodded and shifted his feet. "A lot's happened, in that year, Sam." Eliot was pretty sure Nate hadn't told Sam that he, Nate, was Eliot's father. He figured that was something Nate should tell him, but he also didn't like the idea of keeping secrets.

"I found my brother, for one. Brothers." He put his hands on the back of the chair, something to hold on to. "My brother Lindsey, he showed up on the boards. I had Hardison do his computer thing, and he went all the way back. Nate's our father." He pursed his lips, making odd faces that showed how he was still struggling to process that information himself.

Sam frowned a little, trying to take that all in. He opened his mouth to ask if they were talking about the same Nate, but that was a stupid question. Who else would he be talking about?

Like a lot of the information he'd been told lately, Sam was glad he was lying down. Once again, part of him suspected it was the pain meds making him crazy, but he mostly believed Eliot was real and not a figment of his imagination. "Uh...huh. So we're brothers?"

"I wrecked my bike, after I found out." Eliot moved to sit in the chair, since he'd finally said what needed to be said and shared between them. The rest could take care of itself.

Sam blinked. That really set the tone for a happy family reunion, right there. "Uh.. That.. sucks." He was quiet for a minute, thinking about that. He didn't know much about Eliot's background, but he had an idea it wasn't great. He doubted his dad could have known about any of that, but.. Well, Sam wondered what it would've been like if he'd grown up with Eliot.

"You okay?" he asked.

"Yeah." Eliot ran both hands through his hair. He had a hard time being still, when he felt nervous. He didn't feel nervous very often, and he had trained himself to sit still for hours at a time.

He needed to tell Sam about the girls, Riley and Ash, and Candy too. He didn't even know where to begin. He looked down at his hands as they fell to his lap.

"I have a daughter. And I'm looking after my niece. And Candy's helping." He really didn't know how to tell Sam about him and Candy. Maybe he'd let Candy do that.

Sam smiled. "Really? How old?" He wasn't expecting that old. Less than a year, probably, since that was how long he'd been out.

Sam nodded. Candy had actually already mentioned that they were dating. She'd left out the part about Eliot being his brother, but he was able to put the pieces together. Maybe his brain wasn't in such bad shape after all.

"Riley's seven, Ash is eight." He didn't get in to how Lindsey wasn't willing to look after Ash, and Sam was really the one who made sure she was where she needed to be. Words weren't Eliot's specialty, and sometimes he just couldn't figure out how to say things. "They're both really worried about you."

"Oh," Sam said, blinking. Must have been a vortex thing, then. Sometimes ages were different, or maybe.. Well, it wasn't really important to ask about all the details. "Well, I'd love to see them. Apparently I'm popular with kids. Iggy said his little sister likes me too."

Sam paused. "Should I... Do they know I don't remember stuff? I don't want to hurt their feelings."

"Yeah. They know." Which didn't necessarily mean they understood. "They're worried about you." Eliot offered an awkward 'we all are' sort of smile. "Probably wait till you get home, to bring them to see you."

Sam nodded a little. "Tell them not to worry. I feel fine." He wiggled his fingers and toes to demonstrate. Yeah, he was a little bit crazy, but who wasn't? "And tell them I can't wait to meet them. I mean, I can wait till I get home, just. You know what I mean. And hopefully that'll be soon, anyway. That whole air ducts thing you mentioned," he gestured at the ceiling.

"Just remember. Up, then down." Eliot smiled just the slightest bit. He shook his head. "I should let you rest, or whatever. Iggy will probably want to come back in. Or Nate. I guess somebody already told you he and Sophie finally got married." Eliot stood while he was talking, and stepped back toward the door. he wanted to leave and he didnt' want to leave at the same time.

Sam grinned and nodded. "Up, then down." He shrugged. "I told Iggy just to call. He hates hospitals." They all did. And not just a little bit. "I just want to get out of here. The sooner I'm home, the sooner I can see people without them freaking out." He nodded when Eliot mentioned the marriage. He was surprised it had taken this long, really.

"Thanks for coming, Eliot. I'll see you somewhere non-hospitaly, okay?"

Eliot smiled a little smile. "Yeah, sure. I just. I thought." He shrugged. "I needed to tell you." He still thought he probably should have let Nate tell Sam about Nate being Eliot's father, but it was too late now. "I'll bring the girls to see you. When you're home."
