Who: Sam Ford and Iggy
Where: Desert Springs Hospital
What: Sam waking up after being hit by a drunk driver

The first word that cut through the fog was relapse. He knew he was in a hospital before he even opened his eyes. They had a very distinctive smell. What he didn't know was how he'd gotten here. It felt like his head was full of cotton. He groaned, barely hearing the sound. Slowly, the beeps and sounds of nurses getting louder as his hearing became clearer.

Why him? It wasn't fair. There should be a rule about how much time a person should have to be in a hospital, and after you fill it up, you're healthy for the rest of your life. Sam wouldn't have had a cold after the age of eight, under that system. Sam was tired of fighting this stupid disease. He was tired of being in the hospital. He was tired of it all.

Sam opened his eyes, looking up at the ceiling. There were little things floating in the air.. Feathers? Why were there feathers? He tried to sit up, but couldn't. He couldn't turn his head, either. There was something holding his neck in place. That wasn't normal. He hadn't had that during his past hospital stays. He could move his arm, though, and scooped up a few feathers that had fallen on his bed and lifted them so that he could see them. "What..?" His hand was scraped up, too.

Iggy wasn't aware, really, of how badly he was molting. He knew it happened when he was stressed, and he should have realized that the combination of worry over Sam, and his usual unease about hospitals was going to be a major stress-builder, but he hadn't, mostly because of those two factors.

He did, however, manage a smile when Sam stirred, even if it was tight and just as tense as the rest of him, he gave Sam's other hand a squeeze, "Hey."

Sam blinked, getting a glimpse of Iggy. Was he hallucinating? Why was the guy he'd been silently obsessing over for the past six months in the hospital with him? Up until three seconds ago, Sam had been convinced Iggy didn't even know he existed. Apparently someone had given him the memo. And he was holding Sam's hand.

The monitors around reflected a definite increase in Sam's vitals and he blushed fiercely. "Um.. Er.." he stammered, having a difficult time believing what he was seeing. The man of his dreams... He needed to say something. Oh god. "..Hi." He sounded like an idiot, probably. He just didn't have a clue what was going on.

His brow furrowed just slightly at the sound of the monitors, and the stammering, "You, okay?" He asked, sitting up a little straighter, "I mean, nothing hurts, right?" There was a vague gesture towards the IV, "They said they've got you on the good stuff."

"I, um. Not really.. I mean, uh, I don't think so. Uh." He had questions that he really wanted answered, but he wasn't about to talk to the guy he liked about cancer. Where was his dad?

He looked at the feathers again, feeling a little overwhelmed. "What..." He couldn't ask, though. What if Iggy did know what happened? He still couldn't figure out why he was here. Had Sam passed out at school?

He relaxed a little at that, "Okay, good." There was still that same ready tension, in case he had to make a break for it, he knew exactly how far it was to the window and he knew that he could pop it out of the frame with a solid enough hit, hospital windows were reinforced and he probably wouldn't be able to break the glass itself, but he still had his exit.

He shook his head at the not-quite question, "You got hit by a car, they figure the driver was drunk." A shrug, the movement mostly wings, "You needed to get some air, so you went outside and the next thing I know everybody's freaking out and Eliot told me what happened, came to get me, and here we are." He wasn't sure, really, how much of the incident Sam remembered, and he wasn't sure that being that blunt about it was the best idea, but blunt was what he was good at.

Sam listened, frowning a little. A car accident was better than a relapse, but it still didn't make sense. "Eliot?" Why would Eliot get Iggy? Had someone told Iggy? How did Eliot even know? "Here we are," he repeated, sounding more than a little freaked out. Normally he was really good at hiding his emotions, especially when it came to being around people like Iggy that he hardly knew. Right now, though, he was a little off his game.

"Um. What. Where are. How. Why.. Are you.." Maybe it was just better that Sam not speak.

Iggy was good at answering questions in the order they were given, but half-questions were a little harder, so he had to fill in the blanks himself, so the questions he was answering probably weren't the same ones that Sam was asking, but they were close, at least. "Yes, Eliot, because Candy found you and he was the first one who got her message, and he knew I wouldn't know about it until somebody told me." He shook his head then, "And you got here by ambulance, here being Desert Springs hospital, I should probably get the call out that you're awake, I think Sophie finally dragged your dad home to make sure he got some sleep, since I said I'd keep an eye on you and let everybody know when you woke up. Which is now."

Every now and then, Sam re-realized that the guy talking to him was the guy he was madly in like with, and his brain stopped working. How is this happening? he kept asking, derailing the logic train that kept trying to leave the station. He a nodded a little when Iggy mentioned contacting his dad. He should give him a chance to do that. "That's, uh. That's really nice of you.." He didn't have to do any of that. They didn't even know eachother. "Thanks."

"Candy?" he asked. Did he know a Candy? "From school?" He'd talked to a girl named Candy once or twice, but didn't really know her very well.

Iggy's brow furrowed at that, nodding, "Yeah. Candy from school, do you know a different one? And why wouldn't I take watch duty? Can't keep an eye on my boyfriend just because I'm blind?" He'd make the call in a minute, right now he was more concerned about how confused Sam seemed, "Are you sure you're okay?"

"No, I just...Did you.. I.." Sam's eyes widened to the size of saucers and he started to cough. "I. Did... Boyfriend?" He had apparently landed in some sort of alternate-er universe. He'd never even spoken to Iggy? How could he be his boyfriend? "Boyfriend? Me? You and me?" Maybe he was talking about someone else. Or maybe Sam wasn't hearing things right. Maybe he was just on way too much pain medication.

Now Iggy just looked even more confused, nodding vaguely at Sam's line of questioning, since it all amounted to the same thing. His wings were shifting restlessly, he really wanted to bolt because this was about as far out of his realm of expertise as he could get.

"Are we ... not? Anymore?" He was doing his best not to sound wounded, really he was, but it wasn't as easy as he'd thought it would be.

"What? I.. Anymore?" Sam was really starting to panic, now. "I don't mean.. You sound like.. I don't want to, like.. break up with you.." As crazy as all this was, Sam had been dreaming for a while about being Iggy's boyfriend, and he didn't want to jeopardize that, even if it meant feeling like a crazy person. "The boyfriend thing sounds great, I just.. We haven't ever talked before today. I didn't know you even knew my name."

Maybe it was all a practical joke. It was probably a joke. There would be some cameras somewhere watching him make an idiot out of himself.

Now this was just unsettling. He shook his head, "Of course we have. You've been my seeing-eye-human since ... uhm, it's been a while, since before Homecoming." He shook his head again, trying to rattle the timeline into place in his own mind, "And then ... well, then Homecoming happened, and Hope, and then you needed to get away for a while and I had to get out of my own head, so we went to Bali and you told me you liked me and then it took me until just a few weeks ago to realize that yeah I probably liked you too and you really don't remember any of this?"

It had started out in fits and starts but it was all a rush by the end, Iggy trying, and probably failing, to keep the note of panic out of his voice.

That all sounded... theoretically possible. And Iggy really sounded like he meant it. Maybe he just.. didn't remember. He shook his head a little. "No.. I.. I really wish I did." He was frowning deeply. There was something wrong with his brain. If it had been sucky memories he'd forgotten, maybe that wouldn't have been so bad, but that stuff sounded awesome.

Sam was a little hesitant, but he squeezed Iggy's hand. He was still a little nervous how the other boy would react to that, but since Iggy was holding Sam's hand, he was probably safe. "So... I.." He was scared, he realized. About a lot of things. Iggy leaving, losing his brain, being alone.. "I'm kind of freaked out," he confessed.

"Well that makes two of us." he said before he could stop himself, shaking his head after a moment, "I'm going to make the call." He said, detaching himself gently and sliding the chair away, just moving to the far side of the room and dialing quickly, there was a quiet, trying-not-to-panic "He's awake. He's confused, he... kind of doesn't remember anything since ... a while, since the beginning of the year at least. I'm doing what I can to fill him in, but I don't know a lot of things that have happened. So you should probably come see him and help out?"

That done he returned to the chair, finding Sam's hand again after a moment's fumbling, "Okay. Okay, we'll... figure this out." More than ever he wished Max were there, she always had some solution, or at least an idea, somewhere to start. He was trying to think of what Max would do, or what she'd say, and he finally came up with: "What do you remember?"

Sam frowned, studying the ceiling while Iggy made his call. It was weird to overhear that. He closed his eyes when he felt Iggy's hand on his again. "Well.. School let out. I saw Sophie in Taming of the Shrew, like, ten times." Really, he couldn't have blocked that out?

"And I was about to go talk to Candy from school." His voice faded out a little at the end of the sentence. It was silly, really. Iggy obviously already knew Sam liked boys, so he shouldn't be embarrassed to tell him that's what he was going to talk to Candy about.

Iggy almost choked on nothing at that, "Since summer?" He sighed heavily, dragging his free hand through his hair, "Okay... okay, right, um..." He shook his head, "I'm not even sure where to start. What do you want to know?" That seemed like the most logical place to start, anyway.

Sam blinked a little at Iggy's reaction. Apparently he had a lot of catching up to do. At least Iggy was staying, though. "Um. What day is it? How long has it been?" It looked summer-ish outside, but he knew all that stuff Iggy said couldn't have happened in a couple months. He mentioned homecoming, so that meant school had started up again.

"June." He said, "Fifth, I think, um, 2010, that's important, since y'know, new year and all." He shook his head again, "I don't really know the day, we've been helping build houses with Habitat for Humanity and I sort of lost track."

He sighed, letting his head flop forward against the edge of the bed, voice a little muffled, "I sound crazy don't I?"

"Wow." It had been a whole year. How did amnesia work? Would he have to take that year of school over again? Not that it would be terrible. Iggy was a year younger, if Sam remembered right. It would put them on the track to graduate at the same time.

Sam shook his head, turning a little to face Iggy. It was hard, but his neck wasn't feeling as stiff now. "No.. You don't sound crazy. I sound crazy. Feel crazy. Whatever."

Sam smiled when Iggy mentioned Bali. "That's where I told you I like you?" he asked. It sounded all sweet and romantic. "When was that?"

"You should probably tell me more about you," Sam said, smiling up at him. "You're my boyfriend," (hee) "and all I know about you is that you're really hot." He was smirking a little, and it came across in his tone. "I also saw you help this little kid once on the playground, so I figure you're nice, too." There were other little 'clues' here and there, but Sam really wanted to know more about Iggy.

"Okay." He said again, scratching the back of his neck, "Uh, I... like to cook? I'm pretty good at it, my sister's here, that's Angel, she can kind of read minds, and she's been collecting other powers since she got here." He shook his head, realizing that part wasn't really about him, "I do okay in school, I'm not a math genius or anything, but I'm not failing at anything, uhm, when the biology class was studying birds, I flew for them, since I operate the same way a bird does, really, and I'm easier to see."

Another neck-scratch, "I live with Navi, she's the fairy that adopted me when I got here, and her husband Raven and my brother John, who's a baby, and Angel of course, we live in Alaska outside the Indian reservation where Raven's people live."

Sam nodded, listening to everything and trying to memorize it all. He could probably ask Iggy about it later, but at the moment, it seemed like now was all there was. "That's pretty cool," he said about the biology class. "I bet they liked that." Better than watching a boring video that was made in the 1950's, like science videos usually were. He smiled. He really liked hearing about the little details. He wanted to know everything, but wasn't sure what to ask.

"Do I know them, too?" he asked.

"Sort of." He said, "I mean, you know Angel, because she goes to school with us, and you know Navi because she makes you eat something whenever you come over, but she does that with everybody, so that's not too much of a surprise, and I guess you sort of know John and Raven because of visiting?"

He shrugged then, thumb sweeping idly back and forth across the back of Sam's hand, not really sure what else to do, "And, um, before we went to help build houses we spent a few days in Bora Bora, well, one of the little islands near there, because they're basically deserted."

Sam smiled at that. He liked the idea of visiting Iggy at his house. It seemed so... normal. Sam was so sure he'd never have anything remotely normal. He was sick, which made things hard enough, and he liked boys. He had no chance at normality. But Iggy just sounded so casual about everything. "So they like me? They're okay with the 'boyfriend' thing?" Sam had never told anyone. It was weird waking up out of the closet, all of a sudden.

Deserted islands? "Wow, that sounds.." Amazing? Romantic? "Wow." This amnesia thing was hard to get used to. It felt to Sam like he'd just been unconscious the whole time. Or maybe that someone else had been in his body, doing all this stuff. When Iggy mentioned Bora Bora, Sam couldn't help wondering what exactly they'd done. Had he lost his virginity while he was... amensia-ed, or whatever? He really wasn't ready to ask Iggy that, yet. Instead, he said "Uh. How much did I suck at building houses?" Not exactly something he pictured himself doing.

His brow furrowed slightly at the first line of questioning, "Yeah?" He shrugged again, "You already got adopted into the Flock before we started dating." He said, a faint, tight smile catching at the corner of his mouth. He scratched the back of his head again, just one of those nervous little gestures that gave away just how keyed up he was due to the hospital, "You didn't suck at it too bad, at least you could see what you were doing." There was a more honest smile then, but still tight.

"And Bora Bora was ... nice." He shrugged, "We kissed, but it was really awkward-turtle though, I kind of clocked you with a wing and we almost fell out of the tree, so I don't think I'm going to mind having a do-over, sometime."

"Really?" He was part of the Flock? He smiled, really touched by that. He hadn't known until then that Iggy called his family 'Flock,' but it made sense, and Sam couldn't believe he was lucky enough to be a part of it. "Do we build houses a lot? When I think 'construction', you and me aren't the first people that come to mind."

They kissed? Sam grinned, despite himself. He even laughed a little when Iggy said they almost fell out of a tree. He really wished he remembered that stuff. "Yeah?" Do-over. Sam liked that. "Are you okay?" he asked. He didn't really know Iggy very well, but he looked kind of nervous, and Sam knew that this whole situation was messed up.

"I..." Crap, Sam didn't know about that now, about the School and the dog crates and why Iggy got twitchy in hospitals, and this was definitely not the time or place for that bit of history. He shook his head, "I just don't like hospitals much. I'll be okay though, your dad's on his way, I'll probably go get some air when he gets here, give you two some family time." And try his hardest not to just flee.

A shrug, "And we don't build houses a lot, first time, actually, it's summer vacation and we figured we should try something we haven't done before, it was a Habitat for Humanity thing, volunteer work. It kind of started as a joke? And then we decided it was a good idea."

"That sounds cool," he said, of the volunteer work. It was weird looking at his relationship from an outsider's standpoint. They seemed really cute together. He didn't take credit for any of it, seeing as he was unconscious and/or possessed at the time, but he thought it was adorable and was pretty sure he'd be happy. "Have I taken you to see one of Sophie's plays, yet?" That would be a good marker of how far their relationship had gotten, if he wasn't afraid of scaring Iggy off with Sophie's acting.

He squeezed Iggy's hand a little. "You can go if you need to. I'll be okay here." He didn't want to be alone, but he wasn't afraid of it. It wasn't like he was in critical condition and couldn't be left alone for a second. Besides, there were nurses and stuff. "Really. You can just call me or something. I mean.. there'll be plenty of time to get caught up, right?" He was adapting to the idea pretty well, but there was just the slightest bit of hesitancy regarding Iggy staying his boyfriend, a little worried that Iggy would break up with him now that he couldn't remember anything.

There was another small smile, shaking his head, "I'll be okay." He shrugged, "Shouldn't be long. Besides, as soon as you get left alone you'll have a whole herd of nurses asking questions, I know how it works." Questions Sam probably didn't have the answers to, so it was best to wait until someone who did know was there to field them.

He shrugged then, "And you haven't taken me to any plays, I think you took Candy to one, after she got back." Another head shake, scratching the back of his neck, "She was gone for a while, that's kind of when we started talking to each other."

"I took her to two? How does she even put up with me?" he said with a grin, shaking his head a little. Esk and that girl Eliot liked were ... enthusiastic to enjoy the plays, but Candy was smart enough to know better. He frowned a little when Iggy mentioned that she'd left. "Is she back now?" he asked, sounding worried. He didn't know her very well, but he liked Candy.

"It's really okay." He could tell Iggy didn't want to be here. But if his dad was on his way, he'd let him wait around instead of shoving him out the door. "You can go home when he gets here. Just call me tomorrow?"

Sam smiled, relieved that Candy was around. "That's good." He hoped everyone else was still here. He knew people disappeared sometimes, but he was still holding out hope that it wouldn't happen to him.

"Sounds good," he said, relief in his voice. He hated that he was making everyone come to the hospital to visit him. The people in his life hated hospitals, for one reason or another. "I'll try to get out soon. I'll get Dad to plan an escape." He grinned, emphasizing it with another hand squeeze.

There was an actual smile at that, a little less fleeting than the last had been, nodding once, "Daring escapes are good." A shrug, "I don't really know what the protocol is for this sort of thing, kind of used to just stitching myself up and getting the hell out." He shook his head, "Well, having one of the others stitch me up if it needs it, other than that it's just the getting the hell out. I heal pretty quick." Sam had way too much experience with hospital protocol, but nothing about car accidents. That was probably a little bit different. He didn't think he had any broken bones, but he was still on the pain medicine, so he probably wasn't the best judge. He laughed when Iggy asked if he was babbling. "Kind of. But it's good. I want to know everything, so babble away." He felt like he had hours and hours of straight babbling to catch up on. "Plus you've got a nice voice, so that helps."

"Okay, uh, well, a while ago everybody was getting crazy powers." He decided to leave out the precursor to that, the Purifiers and how the school had been locked down, "Angel got like a billion of them, she's kind of collecting them, she's got like, velcro for powers or something. And I'm pretty sure you had some kind of healing power, and I just got the ability to feel colors." He shrugged, "Some people's went away after a while, I think yours did, and I know some of Angel's did, but I've still got mine, it's weird. Here."

He slid his hand from Sam's to the bedspread, nose wrinkling a moment later, "Augh, it's like ... brain colored, I don't even know, grey-pink. How does that even happen?"

Sam nodded, sort of staring at Iggy while he talked, smiling. "Healing powers would be cool right about now," he said. It was light-hearted, not mopey or emo by any means. He wanted out of the hospital, but he could deal with it for a day or two.

He raised a brow when Iggy talked about feeling colors. He couldn't even imagine how that worked, and he had a pretty good imagination. He laughed when Iggy tried to describe the sheet. Brain-colored was probably the best description he'd heard for that. "Word of advice, don't touch anything in a hospital. Chances are, you don't want to know."

Iggy's laugh was incredibly reassuring. He wished Iggy had been around for that the last few times he was in the hospital, too. Maybe if he'd heard that more, Sam wouldn't hate hospitals so much. He squeezed Iggy's hand. That was sappy, but it was really adorable and touching.

"Little bit. But you'll probably have to keep saying awful stuff like that for a while, just to convince me that you really like me, because this is still kinda unbelievable." He was grinning like an idiot when he said that, and that came out in his voice.

"Okay." He said with a nod, "That's something I think I can do." He shrugged, "Because I do. Just didn't really realize it until people on the outside were pointing it out to me, then it seemed ... kind of obvious."

He shook his head, "Why does it always happen that way?"

Sam smiled, pondering that. People were damn observant, sometimes. He'd had a few moments like that, too. "Because we're guys, and we're notoriously bad at figuring that stuff out. At least, that's what Sophie always says." Sophie might not be the best person to get romantic advice from, though. She had a few hangups herself.

He nodded at that, "Makes sense to me." A wing-shrug, feathers brushing against Sam's shoulder with the movement, "She seems like a pretty smart lady. From what I've seen." He shook his head then, "Which I admit, isn't that much. I just met her for the first time tonight."

He'd already decided, however, that he liked Sam's family, they'd gone out of their way to make sure he knew what had happened and to get him to the hospital too instead of letting him fend for himself.

"Really?" Weird, since Iggy had mentioned Sam knowing Iggy's family pretty well. But then, Iggy's family probably weren't criminals. "Sorry I didn't introduce you sooner," he said, apologizing for something he didn't remember not doing. Weird. "I was probably trying to spare you from being dragged along to her plays. I bet I was afraid of scaring you off."

Sam glanced up as his dad appeared at the door and he smiled.

Iggy smiled as well, "Yeah, probably something like that, and y'know, it hasn't really been that long. I mean, we've been friends for a while, but the going out thing is kind of new, so that's probably it."

He knew when Nate arrived, luckily it was mostly quiet in the room and he could tell who it was. He gave Sam's hand another squeeze as he stood up, "I'm going to go. I'll give you a call tomorrow, help stage a getaway if they're keeping you longer than a day or two, right?"

Sam squeezed back, holding onto Iggy's fingers a little longer than maybe he needed to. "Yeah, okay." Really, he was okay with Iggy going. He was reasonably sure that he would come back now, and knew it would be good for him to get away from the hospital. "Sounds good," he said, smiling. "I'll talk to you later."
