Who: Iggy and Sam Ford
When: After school
What: These boys need to talk!
Warnings: One can only hope.

Sam had a lot on his mind. His dad had finally told Eliot that he was his son, but as a result, Eliot and his dad weren't really talking. Sam was glad Eliot was reaching out to him, at least--it was kind of nice to have a brother--but he knew his Dad needed him, too. Sam was worried that his dad would start drinking again. Nate seemed to be in a better place, but it was a worry that always nagged at Sam, especially during times of stress. Sophie was there too, which made Sam feel a little better. Nate had told him it was okay to go spend time with Eliot, and to go spend time with Iggy.

Iggy. There was another thing weighing heavily on his mind. On the one hand, he was glad he'd finally written that letter to the other boy to let him know how he felt. They were still friends, and still able to talk to eachother, so that was good. Sam wasn't expecting some fairytale ending, but at the time he'd thought the two alternatives were: A) And they lived happily ever after, or B) And Iggy hated Sam's guts and they never talked again. He wasn't really prepared for this limbo status. He was beginning to convince himself that he would end up an old maid, pining after Iggy forever. Things could be worse, he supposed. Somehow, they could probably be worse.

After dropping his books off at home and checking on his Dad, Sam headed to Alaska, via portkey. It was still weird to Sam that Alaska wasn't totally covered with snow. It was chilly, and he was glad he'd grabbed a jacket, but it was beautiful. He headed toward Iggy's house.

Even in the colder weather, which this wasn't, this was downright balmy, they usually had the windows open, because most of the household liked to be able to go flying whenever they felt like it.

Just at that moment Iggy was in the tree outside his bedroom window. It was a huge tree, and if he didn't know better he'd suspect that Raven had had a hand in its growing, since there were branches within easy distance from most of the bedroom windows, or at least his and John's, Angel's room was across the hall and didn't have a window, just a trellis and some climbing vines.

It was hard to say how he knew that Sam had arrived, maybe he could hear the displacement of air when someone fell out of the portkey, maybe it was something else, in any case he smiled, calling: "Front door's open, I'll be right down."

Sam was jolted out of his thoughts by Iggy's voice, and it took a second for him to locate the boy. He smiled though, and waved, as ridiculous as it may be to wave at a blind kid. "Hey." He headed to the front door and walked in. So much different than living in New York City.

Sam greeted Iggy's family, patting Angel on the head and getting a glittery hug from Navi. He smiled, feeling more relaxed here than he had for a while.

Iggy thumped his way down the stairs, detaching Sam from Navi after a moment, the fairy did give good hugs, but sometimes still didn't know when to let go, "We're going to be taking over the kitchen for a while, we'll clean up when we're done, and everybody'll have samples."

He rolled his eyes, sliding the kitchen door closed behind them and shaking his head, he'd been sorting through recipe cards earlier and had come up with a few, and he'd made sure that there were ingredients for a half batch of cupcakes of each, "okay, so, uh... just so I don't explain stuff you already know, how much baking have you done?"

"I've done.. some." Sam scratched the back of his head. "Mainly once a year for Dad's birthday, but other times too. I'm not terrible. I make cookies sometimes?" He and his dad didn't do a lot of cooking, but mainly that was because Nate wasn't a great cook, and Sam guessed he felt uncomfortable making his son cook for him. Whenever Sam did cook, it generally turned out all right, but he didn't have enough experience to do anything too fancy.

"I'm really more of a 'out-of-a-box' guy, though."

Iggy smiled, "That's better than nothing, at least you know how measuring works, which is better than most people."

He shrugged then, "Okay, so the chocolate chip and the lemon cake both bake at the same temperature for about the same time, can probably get both of those going at once."

He'd already lined up ingredients and supplies, he liked knowing where everything was ahead of time so he didn't have to guess at it later.

Sam smiled back. Iggy always made the best of things, emphasizing the positive and trying to make people feel better about themselves. Plus he was really dreamy. He cleared his throat, trying to focus on the task at hand.

"Those both sound good." He stepped up to the counter, looking over the recipe cards and picking up the one for the chocolate chip muffins. He'd made chocolate chip cookies, so he probably couldn't mess this up too badly if he followed the instructions.

"Okay, so.." He wasn't sure if Iggy wanted to collaborate on both, or if Iggy wanted to take one batch and Sam take the other..

Iggy arched both brows, turning his head towards Sam again, "You think you can handle a batch on your own? Or you going to need some supervision?" He was mostly teasing, he figured Sam could follow a recipe, they were all pretty simple.

In the closed kitchen it was easier for him to tell right where Sam was, and had managed to focus at almost the right height, his gaze somewhere just over Sam's left eye.

Sam smirked. "I can probably manage. Just don't hold it against the recipe if I mess up." He was standing right next to the oven, so he poked at a few things until it started pre-heating to the right temperature. Not too hard to figure out.

"So.. just one more month before summer break." Sam hoped his small talk voice didn't sound too awkward.

Iggy nodded, trailing his fingers over his recipe card, just making sure he had the right ingredients, he did. That done he started measuring, "Yeah. I don't have any plans, which is weird." He shook his head, "Well, it's weird to me that it's weird not having plans, never really stuck around one place long enough to need them before, not besides the 'oh crap, how do we get out of this one?' kind of plans."

He shook his head as he sifted the flour, "Kind of glad I don't need those kind anymore."

Sam opened the oil and poured it into a measuring cup. He listened, nodding a little. "Yeah, stuff is.. really quiet here." Sam hadn't been to a doctor in over six months, which was just unheard of. This place wasn't all that bad, sometimes.

"It's not like you really need to plan vacations here, or anything. Random trips to Europe or whatever are no big deal, with portkeys." Or Bali. Bali was nice. Sam looked back down at his recipe card. "I talked to John a little the other day. He's in one of my classes. He seems cool."

Iggy nodded, cracking eggs without having to feel where the rim of the bowl was, it was right where he expected it to be, and tossing the shells into the sink in a low arc was no problem either, since it was right where it should be too, "Yeah he is. And he's good for talking to."

John had been the first one to point out that Iggy's hesitation around Sam probably meant that he liked the other boy, if he didn't want to risk things going south.

Sam followed Iggy's lead with the egg shells in the sink. He had a little issue with a broken bit of eggshell in the batter, but he managed to fish it out. Good thing he'd remembered to wash his hands first.

"We didn't talk about much. Just math and stuff." Sam had felt more awkward around John than he usually did around people, because of the connection with Iggy. He wasn't sure how to explain it.. It's not like he expected John to go reporting everything he said to Iggy, but it was still weird.

Iggy nodded again, smiling faintly, "Glad that someone in this family turned out to be a math genius." He shook his head, "Angel's probably well on her way, she likes everything." His smile was totally fond, he loved his sister, "Seriously, her favorite subject changes from day to day."

He shrugged then, "We should plan something though, for summer vacation. Something we wouldn't normally do, like, I don't know, feeding the homeless or something, no idea."

It was really cute, the way Iggy talked about Angel. "She's adorable. Kind of makes me wish I had a little sister." Sam smiled, stirring his bowl. He'd have to get Nate and Sophie on that, he thought, smirking.

Sam chuckled. "I don't know what you're talking about, I feed the homeless all the time." At the same time, though, he was nodding. "That sounds like a really cool idea, actually. Maybe Habitat for Humanity or something."

He actually laughed at that, shaking his head. It had been a while since he'd laughed in earnest, "That sounds like a good plan, been a while since I've got to build anything." And he did like building things besides explosives, in fact, he hadn't done that in ages.

"And you're welcome to borrow Angel anytime, she likes you, she likes a lot of people, but she counts you as part of the family, I think." He was dropping cupcake liners into the pan as he spoke, moving with his usual eerie accuracy.

Sam bet the builders would be pretty happy to have a guy with wings involved, for the roof and stuff. Maybe not so happy if they realized Iggy was blind, but Sam was sure Iggy would be better at that stuff than he was. The vibrations in the wood or whatever would help, probably. "I'll look into it, and try to find a cool place to do it."

He smiled, glad to hear that about Angel. "She's sweet. I don't know if my dad would go another round of poker with her, though," he said, chuckling. He probably should've warned his dad about that, but he'd had other things on his mind at the time. Sam started spooning mix into his half of the cupcake pan.

There was another smile at that, shaking his head as he did the same, fingers just resting on the edge of the pan so he didn't forget where it was between scoops, "I heard about that. She really does like playing poker."

He had something on his mind, and he knew he needed to say it, he just wasn't sure how to start, so instead he said: "Mix the next batch while these are baking, or wait until they're done?"

He grinned and shrugged. "I think Dad had fun. He likes little kids.. I think he misses when I was little. Besides, she's too cute to get angry at." She'd probably cheered his dad up somewhat. At least, he hoped so.

"That depends, do you want to do a taste test on these before you let me touch more batter?"

He laughed then, shaking his head, "Yeah, that's probably a good idea, huh?" A wing-shrug then, "Might as well clean up while we wait then. You want to wash or dry?"

Iggy had gotten better at being organized once he had a stable place to stay, though once in a while he still had a twinge of needing to be ready to bolt at any time, which was why he still kept a backpack with some money and a change of clothes in the back of his closet.

Sam probably would've been okay doing more, but he wasn't really in a hurry to finish. He shrugged. "Either way. I can wash, I guess." He went over to the sink, starting the hot water and adding dish soap. Gathering dishes had him bumping into Iggy once. "Ack, sorry." Luckily he didn't drop anything.

Washing dishes with Iggy was kinda nice, in a weird way. The quiet moments were kind of nice, sometimes. Oddly calming. While he was scrubbing dishes, Iggy's feathers brushed against Sam's arm a few times, which made him blush a little.

Iggy just smiled at the bump, shaking his head and moving out of the way, he was good at that, even blind, it was possible that somehow the blindness added to that being able to be out of everyone's way kind of thing.

He moved easily through the kitchen, putting things away as they were dried, or putting them back on the table for the next batch if it was something they were going to use again, "So, Navi and John told me something, uh, not at the same time, but kind of the same thing." He was bracing himself for this, having to build up to it, "And I think maybe they're right."

"Hm?" Sam's first instinct was that they told Iggy that Sam liked him. He was sure Navi could tell, and probably John too. But Sam had already told Iggy that. There wasn't really anything new to tell. It was kind of a relief not to have to worry about that secret anymore.

He finished up rinsing the last spoon and took a spare towel to dry it off. Sam knew that look. He didn't know what it was, but it was obvious Iggy wanted to tell him something. "What's up?"

He sighed, dragging a hand through his hair and causing it to stick up at odd angles, looking almost like a new chick's feathers, all soft and spiky. He shrugged as he leaned back against the counter, "So, I mean, you know I haven't had the best luck with girls, and I didn't really realize guys were an option before you and I don't want you to feel obligated, and I don't want you to think that I'm feeling obligated and I seriously don't want to wind up messing you up somehow, but I don't know, you keep me from freaking out sometimes, and I'm comfortable around you and what I'm really trying to say here is I think I probably like you too."

It was probably a good thing that Iggy couldn't see Sam's facial expression, because through the first half of that speech he was looking at Iggy like he was crazy. It was a little hard to follow the rambling, and Sam was trying not to jump ahead, or to get his hopes up too much in case the rant ended with something like 'Could you get the cupcakes out of the oven?'.

He blinked when Iggy finished. He was genuinely surprised. He'd given up hope that Iggy would like him. There was a slight pause before Sam realized he needed to say something. "..You do?" His voice actually cracked when he said that and he blushed. Stupid puberty.

"I, uh, yeah?" He shrugged, the movement mostly wings again, "I mean, I'm pretty sure I do. John's the one who pointed out that I wouldn't be so worried about it if I didn't, I guess I just needed an outside opinion, or something." He shook his head, "I don't know."

He was still worried that this was all going to go up in flames, but he was forcing himself not to think about it too hard.

It took a few seconds for Sam to realize he was smiling. "Worried? You mean, like, if you didn't.. It would be easier." Suddenly that clicked, and he knew exactly what Iggy meant. Things would've been a lot easier if Sam didn't like Iggy. All these weird, beneath-the-surface emotions made things complicated... But now that everything was out in the open, that should clear some things up, right?

"So.. I. Well, I still like you, obviously," Sam said, in case Iggy had been worried. That would've really sucked if he didn't. "So.. what do you want to do?"

There was a faint, crooked little smile at that, shaking his head, "No idea. I'm kind of still expecting this to all blow up in my face. So, uh, if I get twitchy, that's why. Just remind me you aren't planning on setting fire to anything." He paused, brow quirking, "You aren't, right?"

He was mostly teasing, only mostly, as far as he was concerned this was a valid worry, given his last girlfriend.

Sam laughed. He shouldn't laugh, really. The whole Hope-thing had been a disaster, and his best friend had been in a coma because of it. Still, the idea of Sam Ford setting things on fire was patently ridiculous. "Trust me, the worst thing I would burn is the cupcakes, and it definitely wouldn't be intentional."

"I totally get it if you want to move slow. I don't really know what I'm doing, anyway. But, um. I'm not going to blow up in your face. Don't worry."

"Okay." He said with a nod, unfolding his arms to lean back on his hands, obviously more at ease with everything on the table, which he supposed just went as further proof that Navi and John had been right. He didn't have a whole lot of experience with actually liking someone, and he said so, scratching the back of his neck, "I don't really have a whole lot of experience here, I mean..."

He shrugged, "Hope kind of decided we liked each other, same with this other girl back home." There was that crooked little smile again, "Probably part of why I'm not sure how it even works."

Sam had this absolutely goofy grin on his face as he just watched Iggy lean back. And it was okay for him to watch now! Not that he would really get 'caught' staring, but somehow it was different. The whole thing was unreal. Really, awesomely, fantastically unreal.

"Yeah, I'm new at this too. The only person I've dated was Candy, and that was.. well. You know." He really didn't blame Angel for that. She was just a kid who didn't know better, and nobody had gotten hurt or anything. "Blind leading the blind?" Oh, that was bad.

Iggy blinked, and then laughed shaking his head, "Yeah, something like that." He shrugged, "Somehow I think it'll work out better than that kind of thing usually does though." He shook his head, "Don't ask me how, I have no idea. Just a feeling."

He tugged an oven mitt down from the hook beside the oven, turning the cupcakes around as the timer chimed, apparently he also had some sort of internal chronometer as well as a compass and altimeter.

Sam grinned. Iggy liked stupid jokes, which was probably one of the reasons they got along. "Good," he said. "I really hope so." God, he really liked Iggy. He felt like he was going to explode with happiness or something.

Sam decided it was time for an honesty dump. "Hey, so.. Here's the thing. I don't want to decide that you like me, or whatever. And so I'm probably not going to make the first move, because. Well. I'm still a little afraid I'm going to do something that'll scare you off. But I don't really want to force you to make the first move, because," their first kiss would happen when they were 65? "that wouldn't be fair either. So, uh. You can just tell me, or whatever. I mean. I would totally not be offended if you wanted me to kiss you, just so you know. Kinda been wanting to do that. But I'm not saying any of this to pressure you because, y'know. This is the first time we're talking about it and I just wanted you to know the reason why I'm not. Or. Something."

And he did, really, which surprised him a little, that he'd been able to follow the infodump and not lose anything, "And I think we'll figure that out too, when it's time, y'know?" there was another small, almost sheepish, smile, "And thanks." "Yeah." Sam nodded, smiling. Maybe part of him was hoping for a fairytale (or maybe softcore porn) ending where they just started making out there in the kitchen, but that wasn't very realistic. Besides, with the good news he'd gotten today, he couldn't complain. "Sneak attack? Have you met me? Really not my style." He laughed.

Somehow, for the rest of the evening, they managed to avoid being too awkward. Maybe it was just that having a revelation big enough for a few dozen evenings put them at a peak in their friendship--or whatever--that even awkwardness couldn't reach. It was a start.

It wasn't quite perfect. Even Sam's less colorful fantasies had involved more than this. But there were hope and cupcakes, and in the face of hope and cupcakes, even perfection seemed overrated.
