Who: Eli and Oskar.
What Chatting.
When: Friday night.
Where: Their apartment.
Warnings: Maybe?

Oskar was on the floor in the living room of the apartment he was sharing with Eli, happily doing a few sudoku puzzles. He liked puzzles, and these were ones he hadn't seen before. His feet swung contentedly as he worked, listening for any sounds of Eli.

She arrived in her usual near-silent way, though she was carrying a bag of groceries. She stepped over Oskar on her way past, even though she could just as easily have gone around, putting the food away, "I went for groceries." She said, probably unnecessarily.

She'd gotten her own dinner too, but didn't see any reason to mention that part.

"You didn't have to do that," he smiled, putting a pencil between the pages of his book to mark his puzzle. He hopped up to help her put the groceries away.

"I know." She said, nodding, folding up the bag and sliding it into the space between the fridge and the wall, where there were a few others, "I wanted to." She shrugged, "I can be useful."

"Thank you," he smiled, squeezing her hand. He really did appreciate it. "Did you eat too?" He worried about her - how she looked older and more unhealthy the longer she spent between meals.

She just nodded, "I did." she angled her chin towards the book still on the floor, "What were you doing?"

He could tell as soon as she'd said that she'd eaten - her hair was glossier, and she looked no different than any other twelve-year-old girl. "It's a book of number puzzles. I got you one too when I was at the corner shop last time."

"They have everything there." She said, smiling again, she'd only just started to rebuild her collection of puzzles, she'd missed them and felt much more at home when she had some, "Show me?"

He smiled at her and showed her the grid. "So, each of the boxes?" He showed her the three by three grids. "They have to have all the numbers one through nine. But so do the columns of nine, and the rows of nine." He guided her finger along the paths the numbers would have to travel.

She nodded, brow furrowing just slightly, "So it's about logic. To find out how to fill in the spaces." there was another smile, "This is a good kind of puzzle."

"I'm getting better at them." The first few pages of his book were filled with eraser fragments and smeared graphite. He'd actually gotten a few where he hadn't had to erase at all, which made him very proud of himself.

She smiled again, just a little more broadly, nodding, "Good. I will have to try some before I can help you."

He liked the idea of her helping him, which was probably why he'd bought a few for each of them. Their togetherness was something that pleased him - they lived together, slept together (he'd modified his sleeping schedule to accommodate her better), and played together. Feeling playful, he reached out to tickle her.

She still wasn't entirely sure what to make of that, but she laughed all the same, shaking her head and batting at his hands, "We should find a jigsaw puzzle, one of the ones with a whole lot of pieces." She nodded, "It might take a while to finish."

"We should. They have ones in 3D, we could do one of those too." He pulled his knees to his chest. "I could go get one?"

"Not right now." She said, "We'll have to find a good one. Maybe one that looks like the Earth, or a castle or something."

"I'll look for one tomorrow." He leaned against her, delighted that he could, because she was full.

"Alright." She said with a nod, her arm sliding easily around Oskar's waist, it was a comfortable, even comforting position, one knee drawn up to her chest, chin resting on it, her other arm looped around her companion.

He smiled at her, liking how warm she was in these moments. He knew she sometimes wouldn't feed because she didn't like hunting, and he wondered if she'd ever let him help.

She did tend to go for as long as she could without feeding, though it was rarely more than a day or two at a time. Her brow furrowed just slightly, turning to look at him, "What are you thinking about?"

"How you should eat more. I know when you need to eat again, your hair." He motioned to the areas by her temples, where it went grey when she started to get hungry.

Her brow furrowed at that, hand lifting to brush against the spot, "You noticed?" She couldn't think of any of her companions who had, at least not so quickly.

He nodded. "Yes. And your eyes look sadder." He pet her hair carefully. He suspected she started to look more like her real age when she didn't eat.

It was something like that, actually, she just nodded slowly, arm still around his waist, "You notice a lot of things."

"I read a lot." He shrugged. Whenever anyone said anything like that about him or to him, he blamed books. It seemed to be as good a thing as any to blame.

She nodded, "There are worse things you could be doing." Because really 'reading' wasn't even the lesser of two evils, it didn't even make the list of bottom fifty.

He shrugged. "I guess." There were times where he felt far too young around her, and wished he had impressive things to say, like in movies.

"A little bit, not too much." He could feel his stomach growl faintly, betraying that it was hungrier than he was letting on.

He hoped it was, and he still joined her in the kitchen, hopping up on one of the counters and letting his feet dangle. "If you say so."

She took her time heating the soup, stirring it occasionally, brow furrowing at the statement, blinking over at Oskar, "Why do you say it like that?"

[info]dashdotdash
2010-04-17 09:23 am UTC (link)
"You do so much for me and I don't do anything for you. I love you, and sometimes I feel like I could do more." He blushed at how embarrassing and vehement his statement sounded.

And how childish.

He was careful not to burn his hands on the hot ceramic. "I don't know. What needs to be done that you can't do?" He looked almost sheepish for bringing it up.

2010-04-17 09:40 am UTC (link)
"Well, I could try to get you food, or at least bring people home for you." It wasn't the most well thought out of plans, but it was all he had.

He nodded. It was something he'd respect, and he took a sip of his soup. "It wasn't a good idea anyway."
