Who: Sophie Frost and Gar Logan
What: Phone call at some ungodly hour in the middle of the night
Warnings: Nope.

The Frost mansion was so quiet at night. It didn't quite feel like home to Sophie. It was too empty. Part of her was glad to be back, and she wanted to stay with her Mom... As odd as that whole situation was, she really was grateful to have Emmett here, and she desperately wanted things to be back to normal with them. But it was so quiet. In New York, she'd been surrounded by people. Her roommates, the people in the other apartments around them.. She was used to hearing her neighbor snoring, the guy beneath her watching Nick at Nite reruns on TV, the dull hum of the traffic outside. Here, it just felt like nothing.

She'd even tried turning on the radio in the kitchen and going back to her bedroom to try to get to sleep, but she felt Emmett's annoyance and had gone back to turn it off. She'd spent the last two hours rolling over, restlessly in her bed. Finally, she reached over to her bedside table and grabbed her cell phone. She dialed, and waited for Gar to pick up. "Hey," she said, her voice hushed. "Are you awake?"

Gar had been asleep, as it happened. He'd also been a cat, which had led to the sleepiness. Some instincts were stronger than others, and napping and chasing strings were near the top of the kitty psyche. He turned back to human and yawned a salutation. Upon hearing Sophie's voice on the other end of the line, the sarcastic and grumpy response that had been brewing in Gar's mind evaporated.

"For you, Sophiecakes, always. Even when I'm asleep. How's England treating you? Isn't it... late, or something, over there? I don't really know timezones."

Sophie lit up when Gar answered, smiling brightly. "Were you a kitty? Your yawn sounded kittyish." There was just a hint of leftover kitty. It was different than his human yawn, or when he was a dog or something else. She rolled from her side onto her back, looking up at the ceiling.

"England's okay," she said, making a face. "Yeah, it's kind of late." She glanced over at the clock and winced 'Kind of late' had been about three hours ago. "I couldn't sleep."

"Yeah. Still kind have the urge to stare at a bit of dust or chase a string, but it'll pass." He said this while fussing with his hair. Gar started to lick his hand so he would be able to better fix it, but he caught himself before indulging in that particular instinct.

"Want me to read you a bedtime story? My stories are the stuff of legends. Ask Lian Harper, if she ever shows up. The voice of the Big Bad Wolf is much more impressive when you're actually able to turn into the Big Bad Wolf."

Sophie giggled, like she usually did at Gar's jokes. "Yes. Tell me a bedtime story." She hadn't called expecting Gar to tuck her in and sing her a lullaby, but how could she turn down a story? They were legendary, after all.

"It's kind of weird," she said, before he could start. "Talking to you without being able to hear anything. Thought-wise, I mean." Sophie didn't often use the phone, at least not for long conversations.

"I would have thought that a few months living with me, you'd learn that my mind is a monstrous and horrifying place." The melange of animal and human instincts aside, Gar hadn't matured much since he hit sixteen, and his affection for boobs continued unabated. "But I had the same thought. Except I don't hear your thoughts so much as smell you. And that went kind of a weird place, so never mind."

Gar cleared his throat. He hadn't expected a positive response to the bedtime story question, but it was worth a go. "Once upon a time, there was a mighty hero named Supergar. Supergar was mighty, and fierce, and hilarious. He was a hit with the ladies and was extremely well-hung. He was also very humble. And one day his sidekick Sophiegirl moved out of their Apartment of Solitude, because her dad-mom popped into the universe. And it was a very sad day in the Apartment. But then, a few days later, Sophiegirl called Supergar in the middle of the night, because they're awesome like that, and it was like getting a hug from the phone. And then when they next met, Sophiegirl brought cookies for Supergar. The end."

Sophie laughed when Gar mentioned smelling her. She was acquainted with his thoughts and the inappropriate territory that they entered at times, but she just attributed it to his being a boy. She encountered a lot of teenage boys, and in her experience, they were all pretty pervy. It was one of the things Emma had taught the Cuckoos to manipulate. "Maybe the phone is safer." She didn't really mean that, though.

She was grinning by the end of the story. "Aww," she said, in her tone usually reserved for 'Look at the adorable green kitty!'. She rolled onto her stomach, propping herself up on her elbows. This wasn't exactly making her feel sleepier, but she was relaxing some.

"I miss you."

"I miss you too." It was a very appropriate term. It seemed like she was actually missing as opposed to having left. As if he'd walked into the living room and found the couch gone; it'd only been a couple of months, but she belonged there. Animal instincts playing up again. Gar was basically a pet in human form, and the fact that he often perked up and turned his head to the door a few seconds before someone came in more or less confirmed that.

"But hey, it's not like you moved to a foreign country or anything." He paused at that thought. "Well, okay, but you moved to one that speaks the same language I do, and we've got magic now because of your awesome wizardly gay teacher guy. You could be here in like, thirty minutes. With a pizza. Or it's free. So that's cool."

Sophie smiled a little. She felt kind of like a whiny child--not that she had personal experience being a whiny child. She just felt like pounding on the bed and throwing a tantrum because she wasn't allowed to have a puppy. Not fair. She pouted while she listened.

"First cookies, now pizza? Are you sure you don't just like me because I feed you?" Thirty minutes seemed really far away. Way farther than, like, the hallway. She flipped over again in bed and kicked at her blankets, feeling fidgety. "We have lots of extra rooms here.." she said, trying not to sound like she was pouting. "And food?"

"I don't know, I've been sleeping all day. I get hungry." Gar was actually saying this with his head inside the refrigerator. There wasn't as much real food as there had been when Sophie was living there. It wasn't necessarily that she had ever tried to make him eat better, it was just that she liked fruit and bought it more often than he did. Right now he was using his keen sense of smell to decide whether or not the three day old pizza was still good. It was probably safe, he decided.

"I'm sure that'd go over great with your dad-mom," said Gar. "'Hey, Not-Emma. You remember when I told you about your alternate universe daughter? Well, her boyfriend is now my best friend, and so I think you should let the twenty-four year old green shapeshifter move in with us. It'd be really convenient for hanging out."

"Sounds perfectly reasonable to me," she said, sticking out her tongue at the phone. "How could he say no?" It would be perfect. She could live with her 'dad-mom' and still have Gar around. Well, until the first time Emmett heard anything Gar thought. That might cause some problems. "London's not that bad, this time of year. It could be worse. Like, Antarctica, or the inside of a volcano." Maybe weather wasn't the greatest selling point.

"It would just be better if you were here."

"It would be better if you were here, too. Emmett could move in with us. He can take my room, I'll sleep on the couch for a while. Or in Starfire's room, it's not like she's ever here. And Starfire's probably missing you too, come to that. So that's three against one, let's go beat up your dudemom and make him/her move in with us."

New York, after all, had Max Brenner's. And if there was one thing that Gar knew about women, it was that you could lure them anywhere with chocolate.

Sophie giggled. "He'd have a heart attack the second he walked into your room. He'd probably want to burn it out and start over. I think he's even more particular than Mom. Then he'd have a stroke when he saw the fridge. He'd be comatose after ten minutes." That just really wasn't a workable solution. "Starfire could come here, too. She could even bring Robin. It would be like a big party house. We have a pool."

"You say that like you don't know I've been to London. There's like, one day out of the year where it's appropriate pool weather. Besides, Robin would never leave New York. He's a brooding creature of the night. I remember when Dick was like that. You probably never met him, he disappeared around the same time as..." As Rose. "A few months back. But right around the same age, Dick decided he was going to do the 'I AM THE NIGHT' thing. And we were all thrilled when he grew out of that phase, let me tell you. Of course, not long after we had Danny show up, but he's a completely different story."

The last bit was rushed out, as if he was trying to distance himself from the mention of Rose as quickly as possible. Guilt crept up on him, but he tried his best to ignore it. "So yeah, I think we're agreed. You move back in here. You take my room, your mom takes your room, and I curl up at the foot of your bed. Best idea ever? Best idea ever."

"We have an indoor one too." While Sophie much preferred actual sun and sand conditions for swimming, sometimes she liked the solitude the indoor pool provided. Her shoulders tensed when he not-mentioned Rose. Apparently she didn't need telepathy to pick up on that. She frowned, going quiet for a bit.

"Maybe I can get him to buy a mansion there, or something. We can annex you guys." She sounded distracted, not as enthused. Part of it was Rose, but part of it was something else. She felt almost like she was someone else when she was living in New York. There, she was the laid-back, girl next door who watched stupid movies with her friend-who-was-a-boy and indulged in junk food. She'd only been back in London a few days, but already she was feeling a little reluctant to deal with a floor covered in dirty clothes and old pizza boxes; She was turning into a snob, and she wasn't happy about it.

"Well, some of your stuff is still here. Clothes and so on. How about this. I'll have you on weekends, your mom can have you through the week. And we'll trade off on holidays." It was the typical Gar joke, but it did have a certain appeal. It would mean more Sophie in his life, and less not-Sophie in his life, both of which were among his life goals.

"I haven't gone through it," he added suddenly. "Your stuff. I mean, it's just sitting there. I don't even know what's there, really."

"Yeah, maybe," she mused. It wasn't a terrible idea. "But I'm sure Mom will demand custody rights for any grand openings or important sales that fall on weekends." She still wanted to bring him to the mansion--they have a nice big yard!--but as a temporary arrangement, that didn't suck.

"I don't really care if you do," she said with a half shrug that he wouldn't see. She didn't think there was anything personal. Probably nothing even interesting. "I think it's just random stuff. I can come get it this weekend."

"You don't have to, if you don't want." The last thing--the very last thing--Gar wanted to do was to imply that Sophie was in any way unwelcome. "If we're sharing custody of you, you might as well have some spare stuff. It's not like I'm dying for extra room." Sophie was only his roommate because he liked having her around and she needed the company; he could more than afford the place on his own.

"Besides, what if you sleep over and you've already taken all your stuff? You'd be like, 'Oh no, I forgot my pajamas and all my spare clothes, but I don't want this clothing to be all wrinkly tomorrow, I guess I'll sleep in the nude.'" Gar paused as he pretended to give this some thought. "All right, I want all your shit out of there by tomorrow, madam."

Sophie gave a loud, surprised laugh. For some reason she hadn't been expecting him to go there. She covered her mouth, not wanting to wake Emmett. Gar was so much fun to be around, and she was really tempted to jump out of bed, hike to the closest portkey and spend the rest of the night at his place. She didn't really want to explain it to her mom, though, and she actually was starting to feel tired.

"Okay. I'll bring over a toothbrush and take home the pajamas, how's that?" It was interesting; Obviously Gar was the funniest person she knew, but being around him actually made her feel funnier, too. You'd think she'd feel inferior in the presence of such comedy genius, but no. She shifted onto her side, nestling into her pillow. "Do we have a deal, then?"

"We have a deal." Gar felt the urge to purr, to wag a tail he didn't have, to hop around the room. "I may be ever green, but at least I won't have to pine." It was an intentionally horrible joke, made no better by the delivery. "Eh? EH?"

The urge to express some animal joy continued unabated, but he settled for tossing himself onto the couch next to what he still thought of as Sophie's spot. "What time is it over there, Sophiecakes? It's gotta be like... well, like I said, I don't know time zones. I should be a good--friend and let you go to sleep." The brief pause was almost unnoticeable, he hoped.

Sophie groaned at the bad joke, and Gar could probably hear her palm smack her forehead over the phone. Things like that were probably the reason she didn't find his sense of humor intimidating.

Sophie glanced at the clock and winced. "Um, it's like.. 4:13." She heard the pause, but didn't really know what to think of it. She'd had similar moments, but she couldn't make a good deal out of it. Maybe he'd just needed to sneeze for a second and was pausing to hold it back. Or his ear could've itched or something. Or he could've been thinking about someone else. Whatever it was, it didn't really mean anything. "But you don't have to go.."

"And then you'll have to get up at like, five thirty, because you're a girl and have to do girly things in the morning. So you'll spend all day grumpy and tired because you didn't get any sleep last night because your awesome green friend kept you up." He supposed that she could probably just do what he suspected Emma of doing, which was psychically projecting the image of a beautiful, made-up girl when she really didn't feel like doing anything to that effect. But that seemed silly, and as an animal, Gar could sometimes sense through it. Which was always disorienting, as it involved his brain giving him two different sets of data.

"You should play hooky and sleep. Or!" he added, his voice raising a few octaves as he settled into Sophie's shape. "I could go in your place. Maybe someone dropped a paint bomb on you, I don't know. But you get to stay home and nap, and then when you wake up and call me, I can be like, 'Oh, good, the paint... remover... guy is in." Gar's voice was an almost perfect representation of Sophie's, but the key difference was that Sophie was polite and soft-spoken, whereas Gar was... not. Even if he was trying to imitate her, it wouldn't have gone well, as Sophie was a lot warmer to Gar than she was to most other people.

Sophie chuckled. "Oh yeah, that would go well. The next day the cheerleaders would all come up to me and say 'Sophie, why were you flirting with us yesterday? I mean, the makeouts were great and everything, but it was a little weird..'"

She yawned widely, closing her eyes. "But then they'll all paint themselves green because we started a fashion trend. 'Green is totally the new skin.'" She was beginning to sound a little loopy, she realized. She didn't want to sleep, though! She wanted to keep talking to Gar.

"All the cheerleaders turning themselves green? You have a very high opinion of either yourself or my kissing skills. Either of which is pretty much appropriate, because both you and my skills are fantastic, but still." There was probably a rhyme to be made. Once you go green, you never... go... back. Een. It didn't fit yet, but he was working on it.

"If you're not going to play hooky, then you need to sleep. You need to sleep anyway. Why don't we hang out tomorrow? We can see a movie. Maybe that Meryl Streep movie is still playing." Gar adored Meryl Streep. He was an actor whose mother was an actor, so it fit. But he tried to do it in as manly a way as possible.

"I am a Cuckoo-Frost-Sophie. Fashion trendsetter. It's what I do. And you're all kissy-face-guy, so you do that and they'll never have a chance." There was a good chance she was already half-asleep.

"Okay," she said, yawning. "Movie tomo--" yaaaawn "--rrow. Night-night." She pulled the blankets up closer, wrapping them around herself as she curled up. "Hey Gar?" she said, before he could hang up. "Don't kiss the cheerleaders, okay?"

"Kissy-Face Guy was my nickname in college." That was a lie; Beast Boy was his nickname in college. People forgot that he had a real name sometimes, unless they'd been a fan of his short-lived tv show. Celebrity could do that to a person.

"But no cheerleader kissing. If at all avoidable." He wanted to make a joke about kissing her, but kept from doing so. It was hard to say why. "Good night, Sophiedoll." After he hung up, Gar curled up and turned into a kitten. The thought of Sophie still fresh on his mind, he began to purr as he fell asleep.
