Who: Raven and John Blackfeather
What: A Reverse Darth Vader. Raven's flock is growing. He's freaking out a bit.
When/Where: Tonight/ The tree behind their home in Alaska.
Warnings: Flailing? And a rating of 'A' for awkward.

Raven didn't exactly handle change gracefully. Even though he was supposed to be a trickster, an embodiment of change and surprise... well, some things just worked on different timelines, for him. Like family. Marriage. Puberty (even if he had admittedly rushed along his own). So the idea of his now-teenage son showing up, just as his wife wanted to try for another hatchling was, in a word, perplexing.

At least his son seemed... good. Strong, smart, flexible. A good man. Medicine man, technically, but who was counting? Then again, he was probably more still, with Navi being a fairy and not a human. Well, whatever he was, he was Raven's son. And they were going for a flight. That should help, right?

The shift from man to bird was instant, seamless, before Raven fluttered up and landed on one of the sturdier branches in the tree. He figured John would be out in a minute, and was frankly glad for a minute to just sit and preen. And try to remember when his life made less sense than this.

John took off his tennis shoes and shirt, opened the window to his second-floor bedroom and felt his wings prickle the skin on his back. They were more magic than they were fleshy parts of him - not so much a birdkid as he was simply something else - and he let himself take a couple of test flaps before fluttering outside, shutting the window behind him, and moving toward the tree in the backyard.

He grinned at his father, giving a small 'caw' of hello, something that was a close approximation, but not entirely correct. He understood why his dad was flailing, he really did, and anything he could do to make it easier, he would.

The 'caw' was something closer to 'snow', which made John cock his head to the side, but he just ruffled a little in amusement. He had braced himself for seeing his son, but he couldn't get over how big he was. And... well, okay, white. But so was his usual human form, and Navi's. It was probably just a trick of biology. He probably earned a bit of grief from the tribe about that, too. He wondered about that for a second, fluttering aside so John could land if he wanted.

'So how are you?'

The words weren't telepathy, per se. More the impression of the idea leeching from Raven to John, much like he could 'read' animals. He assumed it was what his son meant by being able to understand him- if his Bird was still rusty, at least. And it would save him from having to honk out the entire conversation, if they were really flying.

His wingspan was impressive, and he chuckled as a bit of glitter wafted into his hair. "I'm good, Dad. You're as glossy as ever!" He flew up a little, so his father could join him on the wing, playfully circling the tree. He hoped his father would be proud of him. He knew he'd have to work hard to earn the trust of the tribe again, but it'd be worth it. All of them would see that he was truly his father's son.

Raven ruffled again at the praise, this time an obviously proud thing; he really was that easy to get his ego going. Catching himself before it turned into a full-on preen, John took wing to meet his son above the tree, flying opposite circles above him to avoid getting caught on the draft. Huge wings, weren't they?

'It's your mother's glitter,' He didn't elaborate, figuring that would be an awkward story all its own. 'But how are you really?' Something deeper than 'alright'. He didn't know how to ask that, though. So he settled for a little look, and a gently inquisitive squawk.

He knew that it was his mother's glitter, a fact that always made him smile. He grinned. "I know, you always remind me whenever it gets in your hair." He made sure to fly just a bit below his father so he wouldn't end up blowing his father off-course. "I'm okay. Worried about you and Mom. I'll fit in - I already have a friend from home here, and school will be like school always is, but you two, I worry about." He would have shrugged if he could while flying.

The idea of worrying about them gave Raven a bit of confusion, mixed with the guilt he already felt. 'Why worry?' From what he'd seen, Navi was pretty all-inclusive when it came to the idea of flock. And he was... trying. It still wasn't easy, after millennia of being rather traditional, but he was doing the best he could. It helped that John seemed so well adjusted. He already had friends, his school was still there. 'Were we really that worried, when you got older?'

"Oh, no, I worry about you two right now! I mean, you'd just gotten me on a sleep schedule, I'm sure, that's what you do with babies, right? Now here I am almost done with school. Ish. Not quite. But yeah, I'd have a hard time adjusting." He smiled and shrugged. "Mom always says I'm a bit like a bird mixed with a willow - willows grow fast, and they're hardy - but you're you. And I'm allowed to worry about you guys, I love you." He coasted for a while, doing a playful loop-the-loop. He'd obviously inherited the raven's love of flying.

Oh. Well, that made sense. And he had good points, all of them. (What did he mean, 'but you're you'?) Raven turned to ask him, before being jostled around a little by the gust of wind from John's loop. He squawked, but it was more amusement than anything. He'd have to get used to that.

'It doesn't change anything, son. I love you too. It's just a bit all at once.' Raven did a little swoop himself, taking a distraction from the cold air rushing through his feathers.

'How are things, then? I mean... the family's alright? The tribe? Or is that cheating, to ask?'

"You're an oak. You aren't as good at working with stuff like this." He smiled and thought about how to best describe the future. "We're all fine. You and me and Mom and Iggy and Angel and Fang and the tribe. We're all doing really great, thriving and flourishing and all that." He smiled. "More than that is cheating."

Another point- Skies, where did the kid get sense, from the two of them? He made a thoughtful little crrrrk noise, thinking about what John had to say for a second.

And not trying to hide the disappointment at being called on trying to cheat. 'And school is good? Taunton, you said? With Iggy and Angel,' He had to flap a bit more than usual to keep steady (damn cold air), focusing too hard on not hounding John about his younger sibling to bother holding himself up magically.

"Yeah, that's where I go. And everybody's good there! It's fun." He smiled at his dad. "Do you want to land somewhere? You're working awfully hard." He grinned and ducked a little lower.

Raven swooped past John indignantly, proving he could keep himself aloft just fine, thank you very much. 'Some people can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I don't usually fly to think,' He usually flew to avoid thinking, actually. But he liked the feel of this- getting out with his son. Even if it was still slightly bizarre.

'Anything you need to know about know? I imagine Iggy and Angel are younger than you remember. The tribe.' The end of the thought hung awkwardly in his mind, trying to string along the conversation. More flapping. But he wasn't going to give in- John had to know that.

John chuckled, shaking his head. "No, I'm fine. And I'll help you with everything, Dad, as much as I can. The tribe, and Mom and all of that. Things that are going on around the house. I want you to know you can come to me."

'Where did you get all of the sense, anyway?' Raven made a light crrrk of amusement, looping back around to get a bit of height.

"Mom." He did a barrel roll, laughing a little. "Ask anybody." He tried to reply in raven, knowing that he was rusty and spoke at maybe a fledge level, nothing beyond that. It was how he was with most bird dialects.
