Who: Sam Ford and Eliot Spencer
What: Meeting for Breakfast Monday Morning
Warnings: Not likely

Eliot claimed a table, and ordered coffee while he waited for Sam. He drank his coffee black, with only a little sugar in it to sweeten it just slightly. He drank it hot, and had the waitress refilling it every time she walked past his table with the pot.

He drummed his fingers on the table, for something to do. He didn't really like sitting around, but he hated to be late so he had arrived early. He shifted, eyes turning to the streetside window, hoping Sam showed up before he drank too much more coffee. he'd be jittery for days, at the rate he was putting it away.

"I said a lot of things the other day," Eliot said, though he had a feeling he knew what Sam was referring to. Didn't mean he was going to make things easy.

Sam didn't intend to yank it out of Eliot, or anything. As good as he was at acting and manipulating people, he could probably get it out of him if he wanted to. But that just wasn't how it was done, and he knew how horrified he would be if someone had tried to force him to come out. He wanted Eliot to feel safe enough that he could tell him on his own.

Sam shrugged. "Anyway, different topic. Thanks for being cool, about.. you know. I haven't told that many people." He paused, thinking. "Though, I guess some people kinda figured it out. Pretty sure those guys at school weren't messing with me because I conjugated wrong in French class." Subtle reminder about how Eliot had taught him how to fight, a bonding experience they'd had and also a nod to the very macho-ness of Eliot that shouldn't be at all threatened by this sort of thing. Okay, maybe he was manipulating just a little.

Eliot nodded. "I can see that, yeah." He shrugged. "I don't know, Sam. I mean, it's not always easy to tell these things from looking at someone. I never suspected." But then he didn't really think of Sam being interested in anyone. Sam was just Sam. He didn't try to put labels on people, like that.

"And you know, if you ever want to work on your fighting skills, I'm your guy." What the hell, he'd already taught Sam the basics, and he'd seen some potential in him. Nothing he'd dare to exploit as long as Nate was around, but Sam had some natural instincts.

"I guess, maybe. I was kind of a scrawny runt. Easy target." He shrugged. It wasn't like he'd put on a lot of muscle in the past couple months since he'd gotten better, but he carried himself with more confidence now. Besides, after standing up to the bullies, he'd mostly been left alone."

"Maybe," Sam said, tilting his head as he thought about it. "Though, fighting is sort of the reason I'm not in school right now." Sam shrugged.

"But with good reason," Eliot pointed out. He really respected how Sam had stood up for his friend, even if it did get him suspended. "Not like you were fighting for the hell of it."

"Yeah, maybe I learned that from you, too." Sam gave Eliot a small, but genuine smile. He shrugged. "Going back tomorrow. It's probably good. Gave it time for the whole thing to die down." He hoped, anyway.

He wondered how long they were going to chitchat about random things before Eliot actually opened up to him. He'd give him more time before pushing him.

Eliot nodded. "It's been more than a week. Yeah, should be fine." He'd spare Sam saying it out loud, but he figured they'd all moved on to harassing some other piece of ass. He was a teenager once himself, after all.

"Have you seen your dad? I know it's a touchy topic, but I worry about him. And you." Eliot shrugged. Small talk was not his thing, but he liked Sam enough to suffer through it.

Sam nodded. "I hope so. I mean. It's not like everybody's still thinking about it, right? It was awkward, but I've practically forgotten about it. Though, I guess I don't normally have things for girls, so maybe it was easier for me to get over." How about you, Eliot?

"Yeah, I saw him last night when I got back. Things are better. He's going to AA." Sam knew there was a darker side to his Dad, but he was pretty sure Nate really meant it.

"That's good. Hopefully he'll stick with it this time. Still can't believe he did that." Eliot shook his head. "But, he took care of it, I guess that's what we all need to focus on. I didn't know he was going to AA." Eliot knew the darker side of Nate fairly well. He didn't particularly care for it.

Sam nodded, frowning a bit. "Yeah. He knows it was a stupid thing to do. Um. He had some stuff going on, but yeah, we talked and he knows it was bad." He wondered what Eliot was going to do when he heard the news. He wished he could tell him, but he knew it wasn't really his place. "Yeah. AA was his idea. I think he really means it."

"I'm glad, Sam. I hope it's the real deal, this time." Eliot shook his head. "No kid deserves to grow up with that, no matter how old he is." His lip twitched with a sneer, but he stifled it. More or less. "My pop was a drunk. And most of the foster families I stayed with, one or both parents hit the bottle regularly." That part of his life wasn't something Eliot talked about openly, he wasn't even sure why he'd said it, except maybe to try and comfort Sam, somehow. he wasn't sure it worked.

"Yeah," Sam said, furrowing his eyebrows. "It.. really hasn't been bad. He's been clean most of the time I've been here.." That wasn't the most glowing review. "He feels like shit when it happens. And he's really trying."

This stunk. It really did. He didn't think Eliot would be thrilled to hear about Nate being his dad, especially with the recent drinking. Sam wished he knew how to make it easier for everyone.

"You know, when we all started working together, he was drinking then. But it worked for him. He was functional. Somewhere along the way, he started relying too much on it." Eliot shook his head and flipped a bit of hair out of his face with a flick of his wrist. "I like a cold beer every now and then, but I can't imagine losing my sense of self, for a drink. it doesn't make sense."

Sam frowned. He knew that it had been in his dad's universe after he'd died. He wanted to believe that him being alive would make all the difference. It seemed like it was, most of the time. "Yeah, well. Hopefully that won't happen again."

Sam wondered if Eliot would drink if he knew that Nate was his dad. Sam was determined that he never would. Eliot didn't really think the same way he did, though.

"If it does happen again, I might be inclined to knock some sense in to him," Eliot said with a shake of his head. Hard to say, if he was being serous or sarcastic.

"If it happens again, I probably wouldn't argue with that." Sam lowered his gaze to his coffee. "I ran away," he said with a shrug. "Hell, I was planning to live with Sophie for. Well. Indefinitely, I guess. Till I turned eighteen, or whatever." He had a feeling Sophie would have been okay with that, since she was out of the country a lot anyway.

Sam shrugged. "I moved back home because I believe him." Sam hadn't seen Nate's multiple relapses that the rest of the team had. Maybe they thought he was being naive for believing him. But if Nate fucked up again, he would lose a lot of Sam's respect, and might lose him forever. Sam thought Nate knew that.

"Your dad's a good guy, Sam." Eliot nodded. "I mean, when it comes down to it. he really is. He's got his problems, but we all have problems and issues and quirks. His is his drinking, and it doesn't make him a bad person, or even weak. it makes him human." Eliot shrugged. "If my dad had been half as grounded as Nate, even when Nate is drunk, maybe things would have been different for me, but it is what it is. Nate's just lucky, to have a kid like you for a son."

"You don't know how glad I am to hear you say that," Sam mumbled under his breath into his coffee mug. It was hard not to just tell Eliot, at a time like this. But his Dad said he needed to be the one to do it, and Sam would let him do things his way. It was probably better that way.

"Thanks."

"Well, you know I don't say things I don't mean." Eliot just didn't operate that way. Lying during a con was one thing, but that was a totally different ball game as far as Eliot was concerned.

"Like when you said that thing about not cutting Hardison off?" Okay, Sam just couldn't resist a perfect setup like that. He was grinning a little as he lifted his mug again to drink. Too bad his cover was empty. He put the mug down and tried not to look too amused.

"I should have known that's what this was about," Eliot held his gaze steady on Sam. If Sam wanted specific information, he was going to have to dig for it, Eliot wasn't going to volunteer anything without prompting.

"What tipped you off? When I told you we should meet in person to talk about it?" He didn't want to piss Eliot off, or anything. He shrugged. "Look, I didn't set you up. You don't have to tell me anything. But believe me when I say I know how much it sucks when you don't have anyone to talk to. If you do want to talk about it.. I'd be a pretty safe choice."

"Whatever," Sam shrugged, leaning back. "Suit yourself, man." Sam wasn't asking out of curiosity. He wanted to be there for Eliot.. To be someone his brother could count on. But if he didn't want to talk, Sam couldn't make him.

"Look, Sam. I appreciate the offer. And if there was anything to say I'd say it. But I don't even know what I would say. I'm not sitting around thinking about jumping Hardison when no one else is around. Half the time, I don't even know if he likes me at all. I made a comment, and yeah, if he came to me, and said he was interested I wouldn't push him away. Doesn't mean I'm hot for him." Eliot didn't like the impression that he'd upset Sam somehow. That was never his intent, and he may have been trying to over compensate to try and make things right.

Sam nodded. "I get it." He knew where Eliot was coming from. That was sort of how he'd felt about Iggy, for a little while. But then, splash on some teenage hormones and it exploded into a hot mess. He wondered if it was just Hardison that Eliot wouldn't push away. It didn't really matter, he guessed. Right now, Iggy was the only person Sam wanted to be with. Obviously it was a lot different with Eliot.

"That makes sense," he said, nodding. He'd always pictured Parker and Hardison together, but Eliot and Hardison wouldn't be so bad. Kind of a cute couple. He couldn't help smiling a bit. "Well, I hope things work out.. however makes you guys happy." That was cheesy.

"Things always work out, in the end." Eliot said, though he probably didn't really believe it. "It's called karma," he added with a little smile. "So if it's meant to be, it will be. And if not, that's okay too."

Sam shrugged and smiled to Eliot. "Hope so." He ran a hand through his hair. "You know.. I'm a little relieved. That you. I don't know." He wasn't really sure how to say it without sounding insulting. He laughed some. "Makes me feel cooler, I guess"

"Hey. You're the first other person I've met that might not be against a relationship with Hardison." He smirked. "I'm just glad you're not lame. As role models go, you don't suck." He held up his hands. "Don't freak out, it's not gonna get weird."

"Uh. Yeah. That's what I meant." He raised an eyebrow and gave Eliot a 'What did you think I meant?' look. Even if Sam didn't know Eliot was his brother, he was still way too old. "Just saying. I'm not gonna be following you around and trying to act just like you or anything. Not going to ask you to be my jedi master."
