Candy Quackenbush can walk on water. ([info]toitshour) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Who: Candy Quackenbush and Dream.
What: Talking while Candy's in a coma.
When: Yesterdayish?
Where: Dream's dreamity realm of dreamydreams.
Warnings: Probably not.

Candy was only vaguely aware in her comatose state that she was in a coma. She knew she couldn't move her fingers or toes, and Boa was more quiet than usual in the back of her mind. Stasis reminded Boa of being dead, so she was a bit more demure than usual.

It almost felt like she was walking, but in her mind, and Candy didn't mind that. It was a bit like being back at Odom's Spire.

The landscape was dark, towers in the distance provided lights from small windows. The vegetation on the rolling hills was sparse.

Soft footfalls grew louder as the Dream King approached. The dreamscape shifted and changed, grays changing to blues, yellows changing to greens. Hills flattened and rose in the distance. The space around Candy shifted to something more familiar to her, and her appearance followed suit. Dreams served to distract her from her current state.

Candy wiggled her fingers in front of her, blinking a little as they started to take more form and substance. She looked around her a bit, trying to get the direction of the footfalls. It was an odd dream, even for her.

You may walk as you wish, Lady Candy. I see no need for your time here to be an unpleasant one.

Lord Morpheus stepped alongside the girl, alabaster form cloaked in ink-black robes. His wild hair was a darker black than the distant towers, and his eyes were holes that seemed to contain far off galaxies. He did not seem to be looking at her, though it was difficult to tell. He seemed more attentive to the Dreaming, reaching down and causing a bush to flower.

Turning sharply, Candy gasped at the man next to her. Then she couldn't help bursting into laughter. "You startled me, I thought I was the only one here. I'm pretty sure I'm ... well. If I'm not dead, it's not looking good." She extended a hand to the figure, smiling at the bush. "You look busy, but no reason not to be polite. You already know my name, though."

She assumed he was one of Death's people.

Dream raised an eyebrow. He wasn't accustomed to being laughed at. Had the scene played out a few centuries ago, this likely would not have ended well for Candy. As it was, Dream had learned a bit more patience, and was able to 'shrug it off'. As she said, no reason not to be polite.

He lifted Candy's hand and bent his head to press it to his lips. Dream was not the type of person that shook hands.

You are not dead. I am Morpheus. You are in the Dreaming. Surely not for the first time. As we walk, things will become more familiar to you.

At the kiss to her hand, Boa prompted Candy to curtsey. She bent her knees and smiled up at him, nodding. "Thank you, Morpheus. I'm glad I'm not dead. Do you live here? You're the god of sleep, right? And dreams?" She was immediately reminded of Christopher Carrion, and her smile broke, but only for a moment.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. She was an interesting character, with more layers than most. He didn't consider herself one of the common gods, but he wouldn't squabble over world choice with his guest.

This is my realm, yes. There are many who reside here, and more who pass through. You have an extended stay, Lady Candy.

"You know who I am." It wasn't a question as much as an observation. "But that would make sense, if I come here when I'm sleeping. And if I've been here for a while now." She walked with him, moving slowly, hands in her jeans pockets. "Thank you for being so kind. It's not often I'm so calm while seeing people in my dreams." She'd had people in her head before, and she'd always hated it.

Again, he gave a small smile, amused by her interpretation. The idea that he was an interloper in her dreams was a common one among humans. He was occasionally vexed by such things, but he was in the mood for conversation. It was perhaps unusual, but the King of Dreams did what he wished in his realm. The landscape grew more lush, trees growing and flowering.

I try to make my way out of the palace and through the grounds, on occasion. Most travel through the dreamscapes without knowing where they have been, or understanding they have encountered one of its inhabitants. Your case is out of the ordinary.

She liked his smile, and returned it easily. She watched him affect the trees, and cocked her head. The wheels were turning. Last time, in the Abarat, when she'd been in the Street of Dreams, it hadn't truly been a dream. It had been hypnosis, so the other person had exerted control. But she knew she'd fainted, she knew she'd passed out after a great amount of pain for some reason. So she wasn't hypnotized. And when Carrion had given people nightmares, they were the person's own nightmare, and he just watched.

She blinked and looked up at him. "This is your Kingdom. When we dream, we all just pass through. Oh, Lordy Lou, I'm so sorry." Abaratian slang fell from her lips more easily since Boa's awakening, and her hands went to her mouth.

That actually brought a soft chuckle from him. He certainly didn't expect people to realize that. After all, the point of many dreams was blending them with reality and letting people reflect on themselves. Her embarrassment was a bit amusing.

There is no need to apologize, my dear.

Terms of endearment were not really common from Morpheus, but she was charming, and she had caught on rather quickly. She was definitely a good choice to accompany him on his walk.

"I'm from Minnesota. We're really polite there." She shrugged a little, walking nearer to him. He was kind, and it made her happy. "This place reminds me a little bit of the Abarat. I miss it. You know who I am, do you know much about it?" She looked up at him, curious. "And do you ever leave here?"

I do leave, from time to time. I have siblings that believe my dedication to be...excessive. Something they need to liberate me from.

A wry smile tugged at his lips at that. He was much more laid back on the matter than he once had been. There was a time when Death had practically had to drag him out of his realm.

I know what you bring with you. Enough to do this.

The landscape changed to resemble the Abarat, down to the smallest details Candy could remember.

"I'm sure you have business here, what with people coming in at random times from all over. But still, it's probably not good to be so focused." She nodded a little when he said he knew about her past, then blinked when the world shifted. It was like she was back in the Yebba Dim Day, all the smells and sounds of the fishing community that she had loved were present.

She looked up at him and reached out to squeeze his hand. "Thank you. It's not home, but it's close."

So I hear.

There was amusement in his voice, which he did find a bit odd. Strangers telling him how to run his realm? He got twitchy when those closest to him tried to give him advice. There was something about the light, airy way she said it, though. She was endearing. It had been quite a while since he'd found someone it was so easy to be around.

He watched her look around and smiled down at her--all of his smiles looked a little sad, somehow. His hand didn't seem hot or cold. One could hardly even be sure it was tangible, but that was the way of dreams. If he wished it different, he could make it so. At present, the girl was likely more excited about her home than she was about his body temperature.

She chuckled a little when he told her that he heard he should get out more, and she squeezed his hand a little bit tighter. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

Looking up at him, she blinked. "I - this is my home, but it's not yours. Don't you ever get lonely? Does this place change depending on the visitor?" Candy was a consummate traveler; she wanted to know everything about wherever she was, especially a place as fantastic as the Dreaming. "Your hand. You're not human. It's okay, my best friend is a geshrat. Well. He's in the Abarat, too."

Dream shook his head. The veteran residents of the Dreaming had been here when the landscape was bleak, and the rain lasted for weeks, entirely dependent on Dream's moods. The lucky ones had been here shortly before the rains, to see the effect happiness had on the king.

It changes depending on my wish. I plan, I create dreams, and visitors interact with those dreams. Perhaps a person you meet, a place you go, even dreams to build the bridges and the backgrounds. It is ever-changing. There are many in my realm, both visitor and resident.

It was not precisely an answer for the answer to whether or not he was lonely. That was a question he likely wouldn't answer, certainly not truthfully. Those old dreams remembered a time when the colors were brighter, the landscape lusher. Compared to those days, the current dreamscape was just shades of grey.

I am not. I am Dream of the Endless.

She smiled up at him, biting her lip. "So you changed this for me." She smiled a little bit, squeezing his hand again. "Thank you, Dream. I appreciate it." She chuckled and shook her head. "If I could, I'd take you to Babalonium. It was a carnival island, and there was always music and dancing. I didn't like the sideshows, they made me sad."

A dreamer holding his hand, wishing she could take him places.. This didn't happen. He was a bit unnerved by the unorthodoxy, and briefly thought of pulling away. It wasn't unpleasant, though, and surely he had 'flirted' with women before. They were usually more demure and soft-spoken than Candy, though. He nodded in acknowledgment of her thanks, a small smile on his lips. The scene remained unchanged, for now.

There is time.

"There's always time, isn't there? I went to Odom's Spire once - time outside of time - and saw everything that has been and everything that ever will be. It was weird. I saw my parents on the night I was born, and saw the Fantomaya put Boa's spirit into me." She shook her head, remembering the three wise women that had traveled from the Abarat to her world, the Hereafter, so that their dead princess might live again in another child. "It must be hard. Outliving everyone you love. I've always felt bad for immortal things. I think that's why dragons in the Abarat eventually grow ruthless and murder people. They're nearly immortal, you see, unless you can destroy their hearts."
