Who: David and Reggie
Where: Reggie's place
Warnings: Emo!

The mansion had been too big for three people. It felt absolutely empty with just Reggie. She kind of missed the days when she could get away with stuff like making a toilet tree to cope with this stuff. It was harder to cope in adult ways. It seemed like adults weren't really supposed to grieve at all, or at least not to let people know you were doing it. It had always driven Reggie crazy, the way her mother repressed everything at the start. Even when she finally acknowledge it, it was this weird 'I'm okay, you're okay' sort of thing. She'd never given her daughter the impression that what Reggie was going through was normal, or that other people were feeling it too.

Reggie wiped the stray tears from her face. Sometimes she didn't really realize she was crying. She'd feel a little better when David got there.

Reggie was on the very short list of 'People David Gave a Shit About,' so he dropped everything to get over to London. Thank God for the portkey system. He debated morphing from the dropoff point to Reggie's place but he'd forgotten extra shoes so he just walked, hands stuffed in the pouch of his hoodie, smoking with his head down and unconsciously glaring at the ground.

George hadn't seemed to like him a whole lot, but that didn't matter. David placed a particular importance on family. He knew what it was like to lose one, so he could relate. There wasn't anything he could really say other than 'This sucks,' and he was absolute shit at consoling people, but he'd do whatever he could.

He vaguely recognized the driveway and the mansion itself, ditched his cigarette, his pace quickened, he made his way to the door and gave it three knocks.

Reggie had been pacing around the vast living room. It probably had some fancy rich-people name, but Reggie just called it a living room. Sometimes Living Room #1. Whatever the room was called, it was close to the front door (la porte d'entrée?) so it took less than a minute for Reggie to open the door when David knocked.

"Hey." Her eyes were red, but she wasn't actively crying now. She leaned back against the door, allowing him room to come inside. "We have the whole place to ourselves," she said, the slightest hint of hysteria under the sardonic coating.

She reached out for his hand, wanting to bridge that gap between them and find some sort of physical comfort.

"Hey," he returned the greeting as he came inside, but didn't respond about the empty house. There just wasn't anything he could say to that, and if he did say something, it would probably come out wrong. He slipped Reggie's offered hand into his- that he could do- and pulled her gently away from the door, wrapped her up in his arms. His own personal issues and paranoia were quiet for once as he focused on her.

Reggie hugged him back, nudging the door closed with her foot. She let her head rest on his shoulder, her eyes closing. "I'm glad you're here," she said, sniffling a little. She hadn't wanted anyone around at first, but this was good, now. "Let's go sit..somewhere." She didn't even really care.

David gave her a sympathetic smile.

He nodded and figured the closest couch was good enough. He kept hold of her hand and led her over to it, then sat down. He still wasn't sure what the hell to say. But he was going to make sure that she didn't have to deal with this alone, like he said before- no one should have to.

Reggie sank onto the couch next to him, curling her legs up on the cushion and leaning against him. She was quiet for a few minutes, before her grief bubbled out of her in the form of anger. "It's not right!" she burst. "I finally had her back. This stupid universe just gave her back to me, and then just took her away like that?!" She turned away from him, hitting the back of the couch.

It was the same way he would have reacted. He didn't try to stop her from beating up the couch.

"It isn't fair. The universe.. any of them I guess, none of them are fair. Sometimes it seems like somebody's setting you up to knock you right back down and they're fucking laughing about it. The truth is, all you get with somebody is the time you get." He tried to put a positive spin on it, but he knew it would likely fail. "But when you got her back, you could appreciate what you had because you'd lost her before. And at least you got that last chance to say goodbye."

Mason couldn't remember how many times he had cursed on his way over here. He looked down, again, at the post-it he had received. He shook his head, wondering when the hell this was going to make sense. Why certain people had to be taken. All he could think about right now was George and what she would think of this and it just made his heart ache. He needed to get this done and over with so he could get back to Anne.

With a deep breath, Mason reached out and rang the bell.

"Yeah," Reggie said, taking a shaky breath. She found a little comfort in what David was saying. Most people didn't get a second chance. She leaned against him, burying her face against David's neck. "Don't disappear, okay?" It was too hard, worrying that people she loved would get sucked away at any moment. She hugged him tightly, leaning up to kiss him. "I need you," she said.

Reggie raised her head when the bell rang and sighed. "Probably more flowers, or something." She'd gotten a few arrangements from people from school and George's friends. She got up, reluctant to leave David. She trudged to the door, opening it.

As he stood, waiting, Mason kept going over and over in his head as to why this reap? Why him? They had never been personal before, not before this. Was that why he had been given this reap? Since he was the only one left of Rube's reapers in this world and it was his destiny here to reap *this* soul?

His thoughts stopped as he heard the door opening. He waited as Reggie opened the door. He gave her a sad smile.

"Hey Reggie," he said, his accent flitting over his words. "I came to see how you were doing." He reached a hand up and touched her shoulder, running down her arm in a comforting manner. And doing his job. "Anything I can do?"

David kissed her back. "I won't disappear. Promise." Though he said this with absolute sincerity, he had no way of knowing what this universe had planned for him. He just had a feeling he wasn't going anywhere, and some words of comfort.

Then the doorbell broke into everything.

As he had nearly always tended to be a loner, the possibility of friends showing up hadn't even crossed his mind. But of course Reggie would have friends, good ones that would be concerned about her. It was no less than she deserved. He stood up and walked over to the door, hanging back a bit so as not to interrupt.

"Mason. Hey." She stood kind of awkwardly in the door, rubbing the back of her head. She shrugged a little. "I don't know." A lot of people had asked her if there was anything they could do, and she honestly didn't know how to answer them. Like, what was she supposed to say? 'I don't really feel like doing the laundry, could you run a load of whites?' Or 'Talk to your Connections and bring her back?' Neither of those really seemed appropriate.

She glanced back at David. "This is Mason. He's a friend of George's." Reggie knew there were details that she hadn't been given, but however estranged they might have been, she knew Mason and George were friends, and it had to be hard for him, too. "Uh, Mason, this is David. Come on in," she said, stepping back.

Mason stepped into the house. He was going to hate dealing with this situation. He knew that Reggie was going to die anytime now and he had to witness it because he had to help her transition. But how the hell was he going to explain this to David?

He extended his hand to the boy. "Nice to meet you, David," he said. "I was a friend of George's."

A nod as he took the guy's hand and shook it. "Nice to meet you too, Mason." David was good at picking out sketchy people, being one of those himself. And there was something that seemed sketchy about Mason. But if the guy had been friends with George, he was probably going to be a bit shaken up. That had to be it. David knew he needed to stifle his habit of automatically distrusting anyone who came across his path. "Sorry for your loss."

Reggie sighed. She wasn't really sure what the protocol to follow here was. This was really awkward. She didn't know if she should be doing something for Mason, but he was probably like her and didn't know what to ask for either. "Um. I'm gonna get some water.. Do you guys want anything to drink? Or eat, or anything?"

Mason nodded to David. "Thanks, mate," he said before focusing his look to Reggie when she spoke.

He shook his head, pushing his hands into the pocket of his jeans. "No, thanks, I'm good. I had dinner with... at home," he explained. "Is.. uh... is there anything *you* need?"

She shrugged a little at Mason, walking backwards toward the kitchen. "Just the water, I guess." She still hadn't figured out a way to answer that. 'Yeah, go pick me up a Halloween costume and return my library books?' "I've kinda been through this before, y'know?" She shrugged. "Don't really know that there's anything that can be done for it." She turned, disappearing into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

It was depressing as shit that George's food and crap was still in the fridge. All her favorites. Reggie frowned, closing the fridge. She shut her eyes and took a deep breath before walking back out to the guys.

The wires of the large crystal chandelier above her had seemed sound enough the last time anyone had checked. Of course, how often do people check chandeliers? At any rate, the little gravelings that were only visible to Mason certainly weren't helping, the way they were bouncing on it. "So, um, David. Do you think--" Just then, the wires snapped and the heavy chandelier crashed down on top of Reggie, crushing her. Glass shattered everywhere, and the unopened water bottle rolled towards David's feet.

Mason sighed as he heard the snap of the wires. He stepped back to avoid the crash. A few shards flew up and sank into his arm through his jacket.

"Oh bloody hell," he said, pulling the shards out of his skin, dropping them to the floor. He looked for Reggie's spirit.

"REGGIE!" There was probably a decent amount of glass sharpnel piercing him, but he didn't even feel it. He rushed forward, crouched and pulled at the metal obstruction with all his might I didn't fucking see it coming, it wouldn't budge, is she even alive under there?, he gave it one more heave and then the changes started..

She has to be alive.

His skin was the first to alter, creating a two-dimensional pattern like fur all along it, which then sprouted into three-dimensional reality. His hair became a mane, then came the claws ripping out of his hands, his teeth started to get huge and just before they filled his mouth entirely he yelled over his shoulder, "MASON don't just stand there call the FUCKING PARAMEDICS!"

In a few more seconds, he was a full grown lion. 500 pounds of pure angry muscle. He took the big metal ring of the chandelier in his jaws, determined to get it off of his girlfriend.

It had all happened really fast. Reggie.. Spirit-Reggie, at least, looked on the scene with wide eyes. "What the fuck?!" she screamed. She hadn't felt anything, which was weird and probably not a good sign. The chandelier had fallen and there was a lion in her room. Was that her boyfriend? "David!" she yelled, taking a step toward him.

"He's not going to be able to see you. Not yet," Mason said, his voice sad. He looked at Reggie's spirit. "I'm so sorry, Reggie."

Normally reapers who reaped a new reaper would end up going somewhere else. Into the light, whatever, but this was different. Mason didn't know why, he just knew it was. Probably due to his deal with Gigi. Keeping his job, but being there as a real husband for Anne.

A low growl as he heaved the chandelier across the room. It skittered across the floor, then rolled and smashed into the other wall.

< Reggie?! > Without vocal chords he was now reduced to thought-speak. There was no answer. When he morphed, the instinctive parts of the brain of whatever creature he'd become came with for he ride, and this lion's brain knew death when he saw it. The body was a mess. Still David didn't want to believe it. But there was no breathing, no movement. Nothing at all.

An ear-splitting roar, echoed by one in thought-speak. If the houses of Reggie's neighbors would have been a little bit closer, they would have felt it reverberate inside their own heads. It wasn't words, rather pure fury and anguish.

By now he'd mostly forgotten about Mason. He needed to- he wasn't sure what he needed to do. Change back. Call the... call the somebody. Ambulance. There was a cordless phone, somewhere. He started the process of morphing back as he hurried to grab the cordless. He didn't like leaving Reggie's side.

Reggie couldn't watch this. It was awful, seeing David fall apart like this. "Tell him I'm here, then! Tell him I'm okay! Mason!" She didn't know what was going on, exactly. When she saw her own body on the ground like that, she knew she was dead. But she didn't know what now was. Was she like George?

Tears were rolling down her cheeks again, not for herself now, but her panicked boyfriend. "Tell him I'm okay."

Mason had never been in this position before, obviously. Transitioning someone from soul to reaper. Normally he didn't have to deal with the aftermath of the death like this. Yes, he saw the carnage and the panic, but it was his job to ferry the soul, that was it. Not this time. Bloody hell, why me this time? Georgie has to be laughing somewhere over this...

Mason hurried over to David as he grabbed the phone. He put his hand over his and pushed it down, probably with effort. "She's okay, David. We'll handle this, but she is okay." He tried to be as reassuring as possible.

David ripped his hand away from Mason. "The fuck's wrong with you- how do you figure that she's okay?!" he snarled. "We need to call somebody."

He looked past Mason at what remained of Reggie. His voice broke. "She's not... She's not okay." He hadn't even realized that he was crying.

"Mason!" she shrieked again, covering her face. She was in hysterics. Had George felt like this? Maybe not. She'd been alone when it happened. 'It.'

"Oh god," she said. If she reached out to grab David, her hand would just go through him. There was nothing she could do, and it didn't look like Mason would have much luck, either. Reggie knew how hard it was for David to trust anybody, and Mason was a stranger. "Fuck, fuck, fuck." And then, for a change of pace, "Shit, shit, shit." She had to get out of here.

Mason was at his wits end. He was never a very subtle person, even with Anne, and this was his breaking point.

"Oh holy fucking hell!" he shouted. "Just shut the fuck up, both of you!" He looked to Reggie's spirit then to David.

"Look, mate, yes Reggie's dead, she's fucking dead, but she's not dead," Mason said then tilted his head. Yes because that sounded sane.

"She's going to be a fucking reaper," Mason went on to say. "She's dead here, but she's not really dead but she's only a spirit that I can see right now till she gets her new reaper body but she'll probably look the same cause this place is all sorts of fucked up but she had to die to become a reaper."

His fist balled up, and it really looked like he might take a swing at Mason any second now. "You. Are. Insane." He was clearly not convinced. He hadn't liked this guy from the minute he saw him, and here he was trying to keep David from the damn phone and trying to tell him that his girlfriend was dead but not dead...

He knew what George had been, but what were the fucking chances that it ran in the family? Probably a zillion to one. There was just enough doubt to keep his fists at his sides.

Reggie shut her mouth, looking from Mason to David. She didn't really know what this meant. She knew they had rules, and George hadn't been able to tell Reggie anything. That had to be different here. She crossed her arms over her chest. "Do I get a manual or something?" she asked, hoping the petulant attitude would make her feel better. It didn't.

She sat down on the floor, chin on her hands. She should probably be glad that she didn't have to worry about sitting on glass shards.

"Oi, the fuck?" Mason asked both of them. He looked at Reggie first and shook his head. "Fucking hell, if there was a manual for this shit we'd all be a lot fucking happier. Now just... sit."

Turning back to David. "Won't really counter you on that, mate, but Reggie is fine. I got her post-it, which I think is some cosmic way of Rube or Georgie fucking with me if I do say so myself, but things here aren't normal. Normally if a reaper reaps a new reaper, they go to the big blue in the sky or some shit. My guess is, since I'm one of the only reapers left, if the only one, I gotta show Reggie the ropes. Which I find rather fucking hysterical since I did the same with Georgie."

He watched Mason talk to what looked like nothing, then glanced over at the spot where the body was, tried hard not to look. He ran his shaking hands through his hair roughly. Took a breath.

"This is so fucked." He shook his head, looked down at his feet. They were bleeding; morphing had completely destroyed his shoes and everything but bike shorts and a t-shirt. His voice was strained. "Y'know, I really want to believe that- that she's okay, but all I've got to go on is the word of one nutcase." And a dead body in the living room. But he was really trying hard to be reasonable. It wasn't his strong point, especially under stress.

A ragged sigh as he weighed his options and mentally admitted defeat. "Then here I am again, playing by someone else's rules in the hopes that someone I care about will be alright. So. What the hell do I do now?" If there was any hope left, it lay with Mason. That didn't mean he liked this at all. The glare on his face conveyed that well enough.

Reggie sat quietly, dropping her forehead onto her knees. She sighed. Apparently she could breathe if she wanted to. Okay, then. She glanced over at her body again out of the corner of her eye. This was so very, very wrong and unnatural. What the crap.

"How long?" she asked quietly. She just wanted to be able to tell David that it was fine, and get back to normal. They'd better not tell her she had to cut all ties, or whatever.
