Who: Sophie Frost and Gar Logan
What: Bad news
Warnings: Angst

The day had been... unfortunate. Sophie had been in diamond form since she'd gotten out of bed and realized something was wrong. Even with diamond skin, she found herself lacking direction. It took her longer to make decisions than it should have. It was supposed to bring her clarity of thought, but it didn't seem to be working as well as it usually did.

Eventually, she wound up at Gar's door. She knocked twice and waited.

"You're still here," she said, her face expressing all the surprise one would expect to see from someone who'd just gotten Botoxed. She noticed the emotional cues, but wasn't really sure of the best way to deal with it. She was a bit relieved that she couldn't hear his thoughts.

"You know already, then." She didn't really react to his joke. She knew how Gar was. "I was coming to tell you."

"Yeah. We were on the phone, and suddenly we weren't. Dropped by her room and it was like no one'd ever lived there. Doesn't take Batman to figure it out." He'd heard that Nightwing was gone too. That would bother him more later. "Come in." He stepped aside and opened the door, making a grand gesture as he did so.

Gar closed the door behind her and went to the fridge. "You want something to drink? Got the standards. Soda. Beer. You're too young for beer. Starfire drinks mustard a lot, but that's a weird thing. Milk." He took a beer for himself. He had one open sitting on the counter, but he'd been staring at it for the past three hours and it had gone warm and flat. It was hard to drink away his sorrows with warm flat beer. "Juice?"

Sophie stepped inside, looking vaguely out of place. "I'm sorry, Gar," she said, sounding like a robot trying to comfort someone. There was no empathy behind it; she was just saying it because that was what people said at times like this. "You stopped by the house?" She wondered if he'd looked around, or gone straight to Rose's room.

She shook her head at the offer. "I'm not thirsty." It seemed strange for Gar to be drinking beer. She tended to think of him as her age, if not younger. Apparently liquor stores didn't card for maturity.

"Well, you're a diamond, I guess you wouldn't be." It was always weird when Sophie was a diamond. Even when Quentin died, it hadn't really been something he'd been able to get used to. But then again, she was less inclined to be a diamond around him. He supposed that he probably wasn't great company anyway.

"I only looked in her window. Didn't stick around to peek in anyone else's. Why? Did I miss nudist Wednesdays?" Gar flirted like other people used accents. It wasn't really something he could control, it just got thicker or thinner depending on his mood. At a time like this, when he was trying desperately to keep himself from thinking, it poured out.

Sophie raised an eyebrow. He didn't know, then. And it was Wednesday. She thought briefly that she should've called the school to let them know she wouldn't be in. Someone probably figured it out. She shook her head slightly. "It's empty."

Back when Quentin died, Sophie had been able to calm herself down a little easier when she was around Gar. Especially puppy Gar, or kitten Gar. Right now, she didn't trust her ability to stay calm, even if he had been offering her a zoo. He wasn't shifting at all, she noticed, and she assumed that had something to do with his current state of mind. That was another thing she didn't want to experience right now, so it seemed safer all-around to stay in diamond form.

Thinking was becoming harder to avoid with Sophie here. It helped that she was blue, but she still looked quite a bit like Rose. And despite the lack of sweat or pheromones in her diamond form, her smell hung loosely on her. It was more residue than anything else, but it was something he associated with Rose as well.

Her news didn't have quite the impact she may have been expecting. He cocked an eyebrow. "What do you mean, empty?" The look of confusion on his face was genuine, though if he were to be completely honest, he would admit that it was because he was quietly willing her to provide some explanation besides the obvious.

"Everyone's gone," she explained. "Emma, Logan, Esme, Rose.." Sophie probably would feel Rose the strongest too, but it was hard to tell. "I'm sorry, should we be sitting down for this?" She was still standing a bit awkwardly in the kitchen. The grace that usually came with her diamond form seemed to be a bit lacking today.

"Jon and his family are gone, too. Well, Jon's probably just on the moon, but his family vanished. I was half expecting you to be gone, too." It was a very good thing Gar was here.

"Huh. Well, so much for Logan hunting me down for deflowering his princess. Or for hearing about the disturbing dreams I've had about his woman." Somehow, the others being gone made Rose's disappearance that much more real. It was strange to imagine that little Esme wouldn't be pulling on his fur anymore, that Logan wouldn't be threatening him tomorrow.

Gar took a deep drink of his beer and let out a little burp. "Somewhere a million universes away, Rose felt the need to call me disgusting and she doesn't know why."He didn't know what he was doing. The jokes had always come one after another when he was hurting most, but normally he didn't direct them to other people who might have been hurting. But then, Sophie wouldn't have been in pain, would she? She was as cold as ice. Maybe that was why; he wanted her to hurt, if only so that he wouldn't be alone.

Sophie raised a glass eyebrow. She hadn't ever seen Gar like this. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to be doing. Telling him that he wasn't very funny probably was probably not on the list. She shook her head, then sat down on one of the kitchen stools.

"I'm sorry," she said again. "This is hard for you."

"No, it's fine. It's fine. I've been abandoned by basically everyone I've ever known and loved at one point or another. At least Rose had the good grace not to have it be her fault. Honestly, I've gone through, I dunno, six parents, several girlfriends, no small percentage of them turning evil... That's both parents and girlfriends going evil, by the way. For most people, this would be the worst thing that ever happened to them. Hell, this isn't even the worst thing to happen involving a girlfriend."

Gar put down the bottle on the counter, for fear of throwing it across the room. "How about you? You look like you're taking it okay. Bright and shiny as ever."

She frowned. Sophie typically didn't think about Gar as having a tragic past. She reached out, patting his hand in what she hoped was a comforting way.

She shook her head a bit. "Well, there were my sisters. And then Quentin," she shrugged, as if to say 'More of the same.' Truth be told, this was a little different than the other losses had been. Back then she'd had Emma's lap to cry on, and Rose had taken her on shopping trips.

Gar had slumped into a stool, and now his head was resting on the counter. The feel of Sophie's hand on his wasn't as comforting as she might have hoped, but some part of him did appreciate the sentiment. If it could be called a sentiment when she was in the state she was right now.

He'd forgotten that she'd lost so many so quickly, but it still bothered him that she had a way out of feeling it. Wow, losing her entire family must seem like a cakewalk. He did his best to shake away those mean-spirited thoughts, though, and put his hand on hers. "I'm glad you're still here."

She'd been doubting that her presence was doing any good. Without emotions, it was hard to be empathetic. She did have knowledge of emotions, which gave her a better chance at comforting someone than your average robot, but it still left something to be desired. Gar certainly looked worse now than he had when she first arrived, and she was about to ask him if she should go.

Then he put his hand on hers. She forced a small smile. "I'm glad you're here, too." Not in the most literal sense, maybe, but she would rather he be here than not. Even now, she didn't want to imagine being completely alone.

Her hand was cold, which wasn't that surprising, but he supposed it fit. They probably looked strange together right now, the blue girl and the green boy, but Gar would have looked strange pink, so it was fine. What was really strange was the emotionless girl trying to comfort the class clown.

His eyes were a bit watery, but he didn't want to cry right now. Not in front of Sophie. Gar took a deep, if shaky, breath and looked at Sophie, who seemed as impassive as ever. "What are you going to do?"

Sophie tilted her head a bit, thinking. "I don't know." The mansion was too big for just one person, but she wasn't sure if it would be right for her to sell it. Someone might come back, after all. She hadn't thought much about what to do now. She shrugged slightly. "I don't feel much of a purpose," she confessed. Things were mainly empty and quiet in her head, and it was a bit difficult to get a brainstorm going.

"I suppose I should go to school tomorrow." That was about as far ahead as she was thinking right now.

It seemed strange to have to be the rational one in any situation whatsoever, but that just happened to him sometimes. "No one would blame you for missing school," said Gar. "I imagine they'll have their hands full with your mom gone anyway."

He was aware that he probably could have phrased that better, and winced slightly. "It's no wonder you're not feeling much of a purpose. Are you feeling much of anything, under there?"

She shrugged again. "It would give me something to do." She'd already searched for any remaining family and friends and found just Gar. She wasn't sure what she would use to fill her time without school. She wasn't stung by his comment about Emma. It was probably true, after all.

She shook her head, glancing away from him. "That's sort of the idea." She knew it wasn't really fair, and she did feel sorry for Gar. It was too bad he didn't have a way to shut things out, too.

"You don't have to do anything." Gar certainly wasn't planning on it. The extent of his plans for the rest of the day and, for that matter, the week had gotten as far as Definitely not going to cook dinner.

"Look. I know that I'm not really the guy you should go to for a healthy way to deal with loss. I mean, I've been doing the sad clown act for so long that I've actually burst out laughing at funerals. But I know that what you're doing? Probably not the best idea. Are you really going to feel any better once you turn pink and squishy again?"

Sitting around in a room doing nothing didn't sound like it would be very helpful for anyone. She shrugged. "I know. I'd prefer to be productive, I think."

She pressed her lips together in annoyance. "This is what works for me," she said. "I can't do what you do. Gar, I wouldn't be have been able to get here if I wasn't in diamond form. I wouldn't have made it out of bed."

"It's not working that great. You just snapped at me. I thought you were supposed to be as cold as ice, Sophie-doll." Gar got mean when he was sad. He would feel bad if he actually did break through her shell, but right now he found it difficult to care.

"Y'know, I've seen you there. Hiding in your room, trying not to feel the world. And you know what I've noticed? When you're done being a diamond, it still hurts, and you still need somebody there. So you can be as cold and emotionless as you like, but eventually you're going to be as pink and squishy as the rest of us--well, most people--and it'll hurt just as much, except that you won't be expecting it."

Sophie rolled her eyes. The moon was starting to sound like a pretty good idea. She could argue with Gar, or she could just ignore it. "You're upset, and I'm obviously not helping." He was right when he said she would need someone, but he wasn't exactly selling himself. She was trying to be there for him, but he seemed to be more interested in Sophie's coping style. It didn't look like she was doing him any good.

"I have things to take care of," she said, getting up. She wasn't sure exactly what sorts of things people did when everyone in their household disappeared, but she was sure there were calls to make or forms to fill out. She needed to figure out what to do with the house.

"You're GOD DAMNED RIGHT I'm upset!" he shouted, slamming his bottle down so hard that it cracked and foam poured out the top. "We don't all have the luxury of not giving a shit! In one fucking second, your entire family disappeared, but you don't give a damn. I don't even know why you bothered to come over here. You can't possibly care if I'm coping or not." It wasn't that long ago that he was happy to see her there, he knew, but anger had a way of overwhelming him. And even then, it wasn't anger, anymore than it had been happiness when he was joking or lust when he was flirting. It was still the same sadness seeking an outlet.

He stood up, tears flowing freely down his face. "Go take care of whatever you need to do, and then call me when you're done. I'll probably be sorry by then, and maybe you'll feel something close enough to emotion to be offended to begin with." Gar felt weak in the knees, but he didn't want to buckle in front of her. "Thanks for stopping by."

She shook her head. "I came over here to see if you'd disappeared too." It wasn't as noble as wanting to check and make sure he was okay, but it was the truth. It was probably a little pathetic that her list of people to check on was so short. "And to give you the news. Obviously it wasn't needed."

She walked to the door, infuriatingly calm. Once she reached the door, she turned back to him with a cold expression. "Gar? Rose is what we had in common, and she's gone now." Maybe she was angry. Maybe she was just a bitch. She turned and left, heading back to her empty house.
